Want one! Just hate that locking system.
I'll probably stick with my Griptilian.

I guess I like Spyderco folders because, like my Kahr, they lay flat in my pocket, and If I choose to carry one in the watch pocket of my jeans the reinforced fiberglass handles do not scratch up my belt. This one, with the H1 steel, is the perfect knife around salt water.

For folders I've long favored Benchmade but have heard good things about Spyderco.

Does Spyderco make them? Not that I know of.
I have an SOG, an ElK River? that my son just got me for Christmas and two no names. My favorite and the one I keep coming back to carry the most is a stag handled damascus blade Greg sent me a couple years back. Just a dandy little belt knife that works well for me.

For the most part Spyderco really does not fit in the heavy duty folder category, although they did start with models especially for the police. These things are thin, light, and with the half serrated blade, are great for cutting webbing, etc. Some models of these knives get quite expensive +($300 range) but contain very good steel.

I am a Spydie fan but they blew this one IMHO. Smallish blade with a full size delica body at too high a price point. Sorry, not for me Kahr.
BTW Spyderco is an American company that has their manufacturing done in Japan. Good steel is the usually used and their knives are generally well made, durable and simple. I have several and like them very much. I just don't see the value in the Kahr/syperco knife.

Interestingly I saw a test done with serrated knives vs just good old sharp plain blades and the speed of cutting seatbelt webbing. Turned out the serrated versions tended to grab the webbing as they cut and slowed down the cutting process. Plain sharp blades won the test every time. FWIW

I love all my Spydercos, been thru a number of them over the years. Wore a couple of them out during my excessive rock climbing and backpacking years. Just hard on them.
Some of them they make here, some are made overseas. But I have one of the newer Chinese models (Tenacious) and it's a pretty decent knife. I'm not a knife guy though. I only keep a few folders (all Spydercos) here and there for general use. They kinda run the gambit on the quality of the steel, from some carbon stuff, to surgical steel, etc. Just depends on where they come from as to the quality, but like I said, even the cheap stuff is pretty good.
I doubt the Kahr knife is made here, but it's possible. But wherever the regular Delica is made...should be the same. I know at one point, they only made knives of a certain steel type out in Colorado somewhere. Everything else was made in China, Japan, etc.

Not really, particularly if you get one that's VG-10 or higher steel. Spyderco has a bunch of stuff in the $100-$200 range.

You know you got me thinking... That knife kind of looks like an assault knife and therefore despite its short blade ought not to be sold. ;)

I do detest blade length laws. Mine mostly don't fold.

I've told the knife story going into the Fed Bld'ing in Anchorage.
Told the "guards" I had a knife and asked, "would I be sent back out the door, with my knife, if it didn't comply".
I got this "hahaha, remember Crockidile Dundee movie line" type answer.
I asked the question again, got no answer, and not wanting turn over a $100+ knife to be kept by those asshats, I turned and walked out.
My wife tore them a new one for being so glib to me, and she left too.
We went back the next day, different "guards", different answers, let me in with my knife.

I have tested both blade types during our extraction drills. I agree if the blade is super sharp. If not, the part serration gets the cut started and the smooth edge finishes the cut in very short time. The problem with worn seat belts is, they tend to fold over when hurriedly you grab them and start your cut. Blade shape is also very important so you don't fillet your accident victim.
In the real world, forget a folding knife, I have one of these in every car I own. I have tested them and they work as advertised. Best to cover your hand with something while using, because the glass literally explodes in your hand. Makes for great gifts also. $10

I like Spyderco too.
My Pacific Salt H1 is always with me...
I too think Bravo Sierra knife laws are behind the short blade.
Many states require a sub 3" blade.
It's sad...
Bawanna
01-06-2014, 03:47 PM
To make things even stupider some states are broken down within by city. Like Seattle has knife ordnances shorter than other cities.
Don't matter to me, I try to avoid Seattle like the plague that it is.
My son works for the railroad and they have a company rule no longer than 3" blades.
They do issue really nice lanterns that work well as a bludgeon but he don't really carry the lantern during the day.
Try a Benchmade blade.....they are top notch. I carry one every day and is both sturdy and scary sharp.

I just picked up a Cold Steel Code 4, and I would have to describe it as "scary sharp" as well. I took it out of the box and opened/closed it a few times to start getting a feel for it. Somewhere in there I put a pretty good slice on the pad of my right thumb. Never felt a thing...just noticed that I happened to be bleeding now. Hate when that happens. ;)

I'm not into optic orange LOL.
But I made the mistake of holding this one at a local Walmart.
For $50 - the Gerber Bear Grylls Ultimate is a whole lot of knife for the money.

My only Spyderco is the "big brother" of the Delica, the Endura. Mine is the Endura 4 Full Flat Ground. I prefer the FFG to the saber grind being offered in the Spyderco/Kahr affiliation. The VG 10 steel-made knives are produced in Seki City Japan. The Japanese make GREAT blades.

There are some good budget blades in the $30 price range, Cr13MoV or AUS-8 aren't bad steels for the money.
The Ka Bar Dozier is a nice knife for the money ($15-$20) My wife has one of the pink breast cancer Doziers (she went through breast cancer a couple years ago)

I love the Delica 4. I have 2 and for me it's a toss up between my Delica 4 or Benchmade Mini Griptillian for my best small EDC folder. Factoring normal prices the I give the edge to Spyderco. I also love the Spyderco Tenancious for a budget folder. I have a Kershaw Blur with S30V steel and it's a great knife as well. Price on the Kahr Delica 4 is a bit high, and blade length a little short. My EDC companions...
