Ok...I'll be rounding the hill this summer and I think I need a new toy in my new, old age. The three I considard are (not nessisarily in order) new car, new girlfriend or a really nice gun. I ruled out the car, I still like my old jeep, and the girlfriend, to expensive. So, I quess a really nice gun $1500ish is in order. I like to go to the range and shoot paper and I like to shoot clays with an old 870, and I'm considering IDPA. Help me decide between a good over under shotgun or a good 1911.

Man, your priorities are definitely in good sound order. So many choices. I've often entertained the idea of a new girlfriend but my wife hated the last one so bad it's just not worth it, unless of course Reba agrees to a date but then it wouldn't really be a date it would be more of a worship session.
With 1500 on hand I'd be looking seriously at the Dan Wesson Vbob myself but there's lots of very nice 1911's in that price arena. I have a Valmet over/under that I've had a long time and enjoy immensely, don't shoot near as often as handguns. I think Tikka makes them now. I'm sure your gonna get lots and lots of different ideas here and I'm anxious to see em myself.
You could do a lot with the girlfriend thingy for $1500 plus the cost of maintenance...mostly ammo in the case of the gun. That would be my vote....but I already have enough stock, tinkered with, and custom firearms.

A "good" O/U is going to cost you more than 1500.00,so go for the 1911. Beretta, Perazzi, Kreighoff, Blazer, Kolar are all way more. Get a good Springfield loaded and shoot the fool out of it.

I would have to agree with LHS905 regarding the Browning Citori, if an O/U is on the wish list. As for the 1911.... buy quality and pay a bit extra for custom fitting and stoning, and for steel match shooting I would bet you'd want a flaired mag well and a sizeable number of 10 round mags.
You're a lucky man..... even though I don't want one, I can't afford a new vehicle, and Mrs Surveyor won't allow me to have a new girlfriend. ;)

For IDPA, I recommend considering a 9mm 1911. I use a Kimber Aegis Custom II. The .45 ACP is fine but about 80% more expensive to shoot and not as quick on follow up shots. I have also used a Springfield 1911-A1 Loaded with great results...a wonderful gun once back from its initial return for chronic FTE. They installed a new ejector and must have done some other stuff too because it a gun of a lifetime, an absolute joy. I paid under $700 for it 8 years ago but now you would be lucky to find one. A grand is probably more like it.
The IPSCA folks are shooting some .38 Super and 9mm in their 1911s, but those are high end guns approaching 3 grand. There aren't any race guns in IDPA. Those are supposed to be or comparable to everyday carry guns. There is a little tricking out and some special holsters, but you have to stay close to the line in any hardware race attempts.

So far all good replies. It will be a tough decision. Of course, no matter which one the wife will get angry. Still undecided, I'll have to go to the next gun show and just see what comes home.

I'd get a new gun instead of a new girl friend. A gun yaps only when you squeeze the trigger. A woman will yap all day long without touching her. And you never know where her hair trigger is. Every day it's somewhere else.........

Words to live by but unfortunatel few men take heed and learn. I offer the attached quotation which pretty much backs what you've already said perhaps only slightly more eloquently.
"...My approach is to focus on firearms over women, because its hard to kill someone with a woman, unless you're talking about a slow, painful emotional death by nagging that eats away at your very soul from the inside out." -El Camino

I humbly apologize to most women and females who might visit our humble forum. In as much as I adore women, respect them and put them on a pedestal (I still open doors for them, usually followed by some sort of chauvenist retort from them) I guess I'm in the delicate position of being dominated by the fairer and in my opinion weaker sex.
In my division here at the PD I work with 10 women, I've been here longest of them all, they all think they own me. When I get home my wife tells me what pants to wear and even my female beagle insist I open the door for her at her slightest whim, perhaps I'm just tainted in my environment.
10 to 1 and I'll be the first on call for discrimination, count on it.

I think it has been mentioned a good O/U shotgun will run over 1500 bucks but you can still get a very nice one for that money. I love a good O/U shotgun a CZ can be had for that number and they make some fine shotguns....SKB make good shot guns O/U japanesse made but you can shoot the heck out of them for around 1500 bucks. I love a good O?u shotgun
That being said an STI Trojan goes for 1500 bucks or so and that is a hard gun not to like too.
Good Luck on your dilema.

yep, I agree with the idea of the CZ USA shot gun. I had a CZ Ringneck SxS for a few years. Had some trigger problems early on, sent it back to CZ, and it was repaired to perfection. All of my buddies could shoot the thing with ease, but it just did not fit me. Shotguns made for sport shooting, whether wing shooting or clays, absolutely must fit the shooter for a natural presentation. For a sizeable fee, one can find a professional "fitter" that can change the pitch, comb, etc on most any gun that will fit the shooter. I ain't got those kinda bucks... but I can wish. Three seasons in a row I tried to force the CZ to fill my limit of doves, and ended up bagging it and pulling out the trusty old Beretta AL-2. I've tried several SxS double guns over the years and still haven't found one that really fits. But, I have not tried the CZ o/u (Woodcock?). Having successfully shot a few o/u's over the years, including my brother-in-law's Citori, I can see the overall appeal for sporting use. They do handle well... particularly the quality made guns. I just can't get over the "gangsta stigma". Double guns are supposed to be side by side they way they were intended. The o/u's are nothing but SxS guns manufactured 90 degrees into a gangsta style:)
I almost bought a 26" barreled (custom) Citori a couple of years ago at a gun show, but when I asked the vendor about the price he arrogantly said "Why ask, you probably can't afford it". That would have been a great snap shooter, and he can kiss my ass... I had the money (at the time).
Yes, check out the CZ line and the Verona line as well. A decent double gun can be had for around $1000-1200, and if it "fits", will do everything an LC Smith can do.
Dang, I can't wait for dove season:)

My first auto shotgun was a Remington 1100 12ga. I saw an ad in the paper for one -- $100! This was while I was at Navigator Training in Sacramento, CA in 1973. It was VG or better, but full choke. I had to buy a skeet barrel -- great shooter for birds and skeets. I prefer the gas action for reduced recoil. My sweetest 1100 was a 20ga field model with a skeet barrel for birds and skeets.
I'd go for a decent pistol, too.

The solution to my mid-life crisis was spelled HEMI, but if we are talking guns I vote 1911. You can never have enough of them, and there are so many to choose from!

I gotta go 1911, I'm a SxS, and pump man myself. 1911's IMO are masterpiece weapons, most of them talk to me. I got out of hot rods and motorcycles and really haven't looked back (not very hard anyway), and 1911 just feels right. My current favorite shotguns are a Charles Daly pump gun and a single shot Baikal, both fit me and after I remember what I'm doing I hit well with them (I don't get many small and fast targets that aren't orange these days). As for the new girlfriend, if I get divorced (almost made it) my line will be don't bring your toothbrush.

I am pretty sure its not the guns fault those guys can't keep up with you. I used to have a 900 kawasaki and my buddy had a 1340 (88CI) Harley. He was silly enough to ask me if I wanted to race. I have been riding since I was 8 and he has been riding for almost a whole year. Almost. I soundly beat him in our impromtue race. He said man I wish I could see my bike beat yours one time. I said lets trade bikes and race again, You'll see your bike win for sure then.
It's not the gun that makes the shooter......

The new camaro's are calling me. Not a hemi but I heard they have a pretty good passing gear. I'm just concerned about running an automatic, don't do clutches much these days, too many broom handles involved.
We'll see how that goes. HEMI is a good solution.
While I have several shotguns, I'd definitely go 1911 as well, can't go wrong.

I don't own a camera except an old polaroid that somebody gave me, which I think I lost years ago. I may have a picture or two, but I don't have a clue of how to upload one to a forum.

I don't think she would appreciate it. She's funny that way. As far as I know, I'm the only person in Atlanta that knows about it. I wouldn't mind sending a private picture, but I wouldn't want it on the forum, nor would she. You wouldn't want me in trouble would you? [of course you would<G>]

I thought you said girlfriend not wife. Been so long since I thought girlfriend I didn't realize you could get in the same trouble but of course there's really little difference. I did find Ms Tennessee 1950 but figured that was too far back. I don't want ya in trouble, we get enough troubles without people wishing for troubles upon us. We'll just have to use our imagination and move on.
Stick with guns, they never whine or complain, let you play with others and you can post brag photos' of them with fear of a physical beating.

Amen on the guns. And yes, 1950 was too far back - she wasn't born until 1955.
