Sounds like sound advice. I lost a dog a few years ago, though not out in the woods. She sneaked out the front door when my dad came home as he was dog sitting her and my two other dogs. She never came back and my heart still hurts.

**** hunting for many years I gave gotten a bunch back this way. I would always leave my hunting coat where I turned the dog out. Come back in the morning and they would usually be sleeping on it.

Bravo! Well done, sir!

In addition to an occasional gem of wisdom in a gun related post, it is "feel good" posts like yours that motivate me to visit the forum, in spite of all the usual whining and political Bravo Sierra . . .

Thanks! :)

Great post and idea. Fortunately, we've never had to do this, knock on wood.

From personal experience what TheTman posted works.

It is kinda common knowledge amoung dog hunters/owners. Especially **** hunters who loose dogs alot on a nite chase but leaving a familiar scent packet of clothing etc, most every time the dog is there in the morning to. I also thing once a dog has went through this ordeal, that once he hits that scent packet, he stays to.

Hell we married men comne home every day u know, no scent packet needed, just basic FEAR takes over..

I have a good friend thatis a pofessionaql LEO dog trainer kand he recently trained successfully a diabetic dog for a 8 ytear old boy to have at his side, especialy at nite when he is sleeping. The dog can scent highs ad lows in his sugar count and actually nudge the boy to alert him. Dogs are amazing. I seen one of his trained LEO derug dogs go through our local sheriffs jail and the fokker found a cell phone wrapped in plastic down inside of the toilet. The dog was specifically trained on cell phones along with drugs..Just sayin

I lost my first wife once and set a muzzy's towel there for her, and she never returned home again!!

What is this "**** hunter" crap. I was a hardcore **** hunter for many years. I was a breeder of coonhounds (mostly American Black and Tans) and competed in competition hunts all over the country. Have we gotten to the point of political correctness that we can't say **** hunter for someone that hunts racoons? ABSURD!
BTW I used to use that trick all time before I could afford to buy tracking collars for my hounds. It worked most of the time.

What's funny was I never even noticed that until you just posted.

I've run dogs for years on **** and bear.

Hahah. That is sad.
