Now U 2 can own a 1911.

No mention of its weight, that's the whole point of polymer and they missed it.

I'd consider it if it was well balanced and significantly lighter than a steel version, and didn't have the fugly rail.

Can't imagine a 1911 in poly, though as stated many times before I like to feel the weight for counterbalance and simple don't shoot ploys as well.

The price is the other "whole point." Plastic is allegedly way cheaper to make.

And of course the reliability must be proven.

When Browning invented the 1911 flashlights and lasers hadn't been invented yet, so there was no need for a rail. Browning being ahead of his time allowed room for one, so it's only natural for his guns to have them today. Being that the rail is made from polymer it would be very easy to remove with a dremel, giving Bawanna something to do in his spare time. John M. thought of everything. As to the price this gun would retail for at least $850 if it was made totally from steel.

Dunno about the price, EAA's steel Witness line is half that price.

No thanks.
If I wanted a lightweight 1911 I'd find a LW Colt Commander or better yet, an Ed Brown LW Kobra Carry.

I thought Wilson combat made a plastic frame 1911?

Ya got me there, Wisewolfhowling, though I wouldn't be surprised. Polymer is an idea whose time has come. BTW, is Wisewolfhowling a native American name?

Unless I'm missing it on their web site, I don't think so.
Their LW 1911 guns are aluminum frames.

No wisewolfhowling is a name I came up with years ago to be original. Based around the fact I have always had an interest in wolves and how a wolf pack operates

Wilson combat kz45 I believe is what I am thinking of. Saw one in my local gun shop a few months ago. He had just got it in and said he ordered back in 2011!

Yes indeed, the Wilson's KZ-45 (http://www.wilsoncombat.com/kztest.asp) has a poly frame.

Other poly frame 1911 style pistols:
Kimber teamed up with BUL to make their no longer in production BP10 II (http://lonelyraven.zenfolio.com/img/v11/p855830631.jpg) (I had one of these and it was a solid performer for me, external extractor and all).

BUL still makes their M-5 line of poly frame 1911 style pistols (http://bultransmark.net/BULM5.htm).

The STI Edge has a polymer grip (http://www.stiguns.com/the-sti-edge/).

Rock River has been promising a poly (http://www.rockriverarms.com/index.cfm?fuseaction=category.display&category_ID=559) for some time now.

Greg

Guess I'm a polymer fan as I own and carry so many HKs.
Don't own a single 1911.
But if I did I would want an all stainless steel one.
If weight was an issue?
I could go for an alloy frame like my Sig P220/P239 guns.

But a polymer 1911 just doesn't seem right to me.

Honestly, I'm still holding out for an all stainless Kahr K45/MK45 Elite.
One fine day...

Oh, so shiny!!!!.....Somehow a polymer frame 1911 seems like blasphemy to me...Be like putting a jet engine on a P51 Mustang or something, just aint right....Folks should leave um like they were when God gave the first one to Moses to part the Red Sea with....Shouldn't mess with God's creations!!!

No no no, God gave Moses an original 1911 to part the Red Sea with...He later used a P51 Mustang to take out Sodom and Gomorrah which required slightly more firepower....Get yer facts straight there Paw Pa...:D

Jocko of course - LOL!
Just kidding.
That's not my gun.
Just a random pic off the internet.

I've got a factory shinny MK40 Elite.
But that Covert has the Jocko Mirror Shine treatment.

That's my sample of what I'm really dreaming of.
A Covert K45 Ultra.

How about a limited run KahrTalk group buy?
Are you in?

If you guys get Kahr to make a special run of MK45's for us and I'll sell whatever I have to from my now extremely small collection in order to pay for my copy.

Sorry to jump in late to this discussion. Before I got into the smithing and gunrange biz, back in the 1980's, the range I went to had a gunsmith of some note, named Geroge. Ol' George showed my his own personal Colt Commander (all Commanders were aluminum back then, the Combat Commander was steel). The back of the right rail was gone for about 3/4 inch. Colt wouldn't replace the frame, calling the gun totalled. George kept shooting it. This was before you could really get an aftermarket stripped frame. Later, I took George's place and we built up Commander's and Officers on aluminum "Ranger Ordnance" frames. They all broke in the same place. I also built up an Officer's for my good friend, made from a Colt frame. Guess what? Yup. And there were a few customers that had Colts that also broke in that same spot. Something about the back right rail taking its share of punishment. Dunno exactly why.

Not to say that lots and lots of Commanders and later the LW's are shot a lot and do well. Just that I've seen my share of problems with alloy frames in the Colt .45 Auto design, and its always in the same spot. Personally, I'd have thought that the slide stop hole or the mainspring housing retainer hole would have been the first to fail.

The other thing I seemed to do a lot of... sadly... on alloy Colt .45 Auto's was grip screw escutcheon replacement, with oversize parts, because invariably those fine threads would rip out even with no user fidddling. Standard replacement was the oversize part correctly fitted, JB weld mixed with powdered metal and quad staked in place using a hydraulic press (no hammering!). Even then, sometimes they got ripped out from shooting.

So...... time will tell on this polymer Colt .45 Auto copy.
