View Full Version : Disassembling recoil spring
Hello,
So is the double spring unit meant to be disassembled? The smaller spring on the recoil guide rod? Or is that a factory unit best left alone?
Also, can the larger spring be purchased separately from Kahr or must I purchase the whole unit.
Thanks
Jim

Kahr considers that a unit. The outer spring can be replaced, leaving the original inner one, though.
Red Loctite is used on the nut at the front on the guide rod and requires like 500 degrees of heat and tools to break down, though brute force and torque can work, too.
There have been a few failures where the nut comes off and Kahr would replace the whole unit for free.

Wynn,
Thanks for the thorough and knowledgeable reply.

My 21 cents. leave the innerspring along, even if u replace springs just replace the outter. U can spray clean that innder spring right on the assembly and put a drop of oil on it let it go where it wants. Less is good. I prefer Remington dry spry lube, no mess. what why said about that nut is dead nuts straight, so I say leave it alone. If it ain't broke don't fix it.

he right on that to. Just go to the woffs gunsprings site and order the PM9 recoil outter springs, It will fit both cm and PM kahrs in 9mm and 40 cal to. Buy a 3 pak helps postage. They also show extra 5% more strength magazine springs for the 6, 7 round mags to. order a 3 pak of them, and u might want to consider trying one of their 5# striker springs. works great, drops right in, no mod needed. A nice upgrade to your gun.
good luck.

When I ordered springs from the Wolff web site for my PM9, I could only find two options involving the outer spring:
STD RECOIL SPRING SET 18LB (SKU 52818)
RECOIL SPRING SET 20.5LB (SKU 52820)
Both are sets include an inner recoil spring AND a 'factory power striker spring'.
1. Does anyone know if there is another way to order just the outer recoil spring (please provide SKU)?
2. Does anyone know if there is another way to order just the factory rated (I'm assuming 6-7 #) striker spring (please provide SKU)?
Since I also bought and installed one of the STRIKER SPRING 5 LB Pak of 3 (SKU 32321) and may have inadvertently tweaked the original factory striker spring (nothing related to the actual change out procedure) I'm glad the above spring sets included one.

no thatis the way they come, but just use the outter spring. wolffs seems to ad dthat to recol springs for some reason. I neve ruse the striker sring they sent or the inner recoil spring either...
I have the 20.54# in my PMJ9 and like it, not sure I can tell alot of diference as my PMJ9 is magna ported so it is sweet to shoot anyhow. My thought was it would just last alot longer. I never bought it for reduced felt recoil, although it has to have some reduction I would think. The odd thing is tha tthe cm kand PM40 kahrs use the same factory repocil spring f 189# kand I find that odd as the 40 cal is so much hotter than the 9. One would think they would have used the 20.5# but agai my thoughts are also that the kahrs are hard eoggh to hand rack now so why add more recoil spring poundage..Just my 21 cents on this.
