A U.S. newspaper conglomerate has considered building state-by-state databases of people who have the right to carry concealed firearms.
Civitas Media, which owns 88 newspapers in 12 states and more than (http://www.linkedin.com/company/civitas-media) 100 total publications, is planning to use public records requests to build their databases, according to an internal Civitas email (http://www.buckeyefirearms.org/node/9291) obtained by the Buckeye Firearms Association in Ohio.
Civitas director of content Jim Lawitz emailed content directors, managers, and producers in a January 19 email, saying that exploring the “explosion” of conceal and carry permits in the U.S. will be one of the company’s short-term objectives.
“We are launching two enterprise projects across our newsrooms this month. The first will deal with the creeping influence of heroin in our communities. The deadly drug has quietly taken over, reaching across all age groups and eclipsing meth as the recreational drug of choice,” Lawitz began.
“The second project examines the explosion of ‘conceal and carry’ gun permits across the U.S. Through public records act requests, we will attempt to build state-by-state databases that list those who have the right to carry a concealed weapon,” Lawitz wrote in the email.
When reached for comment by Buckeye Firearms Association, Lawitz said the news conglomerate currently has no plans to publish the database.
“We do not typically publicly comment on internal propriety communication. However, we have no plans to publish any names on any lists. Further, we are open to discuss any published reports,” Lawitz said.

They'll be arrested if they do that here in Florida.

How about we publish a list of everyone who voted Democrat.

I don't think that will fly at all but it's a reminder to be ever vigilante in your watch over the media.

I don't believe that information is public record anywhere. I know we're only allowed to retain transfer paperwork for 20 days and then it has to be shredded unless the transfer was denied.

I'm not gonna lose any sleep over this deal.

So what is the point or purpose of building such a database?

I think our I(ndiana State Police has a data base on cc permits in Indiana, but not sure it goes beyond tht, but again in the age of computers, and hackers. That base is vulnerable. My locl policesigns off on anyone in our town who applies for a cc permit but then it goes to the state, for approval and further investigation. I do not think our local police has any data base what so ever. ot to worry ovmit will not allow this, If u hve insurance tha tu like u can keep it. I trust him !!! Just sayin

Two can play the same game. Lets publish the names and addresses of the owner of the paper, his editors names and addresses, the names of their wives and children. See how they like it when the shoe is on the other foot.

Including where they go to school. work etc. Also post pictures of them and heir families. If it is worth doing it is worth overdoing.

Anything compiled under open source is legal plus private concerns have no oversight restrictions as gov't does. And I'm quite sure there be other piecemeal sources besides official/gov't records.

Same here in Texas.

Sure are a lot of those Fourth Estate types who are really too big for their britches.

I'm in. I think it would be a good idea to post any arrests (DUI/Domestic Violence/Drug arrests). It will keep them honest, it's for the children, ya know.....:p

In Illinois we actually had the State's Attorney General Lisa Madigan threaten to publish the names of all the FOID card holders a couple of years ago. Thankfully the legislature stepped in and made it illegal to publish those names. It is not just the media but also the politicians that onw must be weary of these days. I believe the bill also covers the new conceal carry law also, but not 100% sure if that is the case.
