View Full Version : Should Pocket Holster Retain Gun?
I pocket carry my PM9 in a Desantis Nemisis. It works well however the holster does not retain the pistol if the rig is turned upside down. The pistol will slide right out. This is when the rig is outside of my pocket.
I have a Glock G27 with a Galco Pocket Protector, a heavier gun, that is retained in the holster when the rig is turned upside down. This also is when the rig is outside of my pocket.
The Desantis is synthetic material while the Galco is leather.
Is there an advantage/disadvantage to one over the other or is is simply personal preference?
Reasons why for the advantage/disadvantage and/or preference would be helpful.
Thanks
Jim

I use a Desantis Nemisis for my MK9....................." Doctor, every time I turn my holster upside down, my firearm falls out." " Well, don't turn your holster upside down then." I like the Desantis because it has basically molded itself to my pocket/leg. The firearm comes out nice and smooth, and the holster stays put. It's reasonably priced, and doesn't rub your firearm too much.

Try the PJHolster "Pocket" Holster, works great with my CM9. As with most well made Kydex Holsters, you hear that distinctive "click" when inserting the CM9 into the holster. Has better retention than my DeSantis "Pro" model, just as comfy & holster stays put in pocket. While a tad more spendy, it has been a good switch for me. Good luck in your search. :D
One of the reasons I ask is because recently while at an acquaintance's house I was sitting in a "deep" couch, where my butt is much lower then my knees and had a concern of the gun sliding out of the holster and consequently out of my pocket.
There are other scenarios where I picture the weapon falling out of my pocket.
If the holster retains the gun I don't see the gun going anywhere.
Thanks

I pocket carry every day. Have done so for 'bout 6 years now:) I have progressed to using a Blackhawk #4 nylon pocket holster.
I'm using it to carry a CW40 or a SR9c. There is no extra wiggle room in the pocket and the pistol is very secure. If someone hung me by my feet and shook hard, maybe the pistol would come loose:confused: But the only other way it will come out is if'n I pull it out:D

My .380 slides easily out of my Desantis Nemisis pocket holster but this has not ever been an issue when sitting. Could be the gun being so small sits really low in the pocket and/or when sitting the trouser material tightens some against the holster and gun.
For my PM9 I use a modified by me Alabama Holster that has upside down retention. My PM9 with Alabama Kydex holster is about the same exact thickness as my P3AT in the Desantis Nemisis.
EDC CM9 in DeSantis front pocket holster for 2 years. I usually wear business casual pants which have deeper pockets than jeans, etc. Walk, sit, recline, work, home, restaurant, store, play with my Grandson, bump into people at work in close quarters. My holster/gun has never fallen out and I have never been "made".

I want the gun to come out of the holster easily and the holster to stay in the pocket. The pocket keeps the gun in the pocket. A cheapie Uncle Mikes works fine for me.

I pocket carry my Sig P238 in a Remora Holster. My Remora grabs the material of the pocket as well as my Sig. I've never had a problem with the pistol wanting to fall out of my pocket. But that doesn't keep me from hating deep seating couches because I can't get out of them without help.

My only beef with Remoras is they are very hard to stuff into my wasteband sometimes. They need to make it a one way material, easy in and won't pull out.

Hey, that is actually a very good idea! Some kind of rubber like "fish scale" texture to the holster?

A pocket holster should be loose enough that it allows the gun to slip out easily. It's purpose is to cover the trigger, disguise the shape and keep the gun oriented correctly in your pocket - grip up, barrel down.
An OWB holster. should retain a gun held upside down, not a pocket holster.

+1
I agree with these statements.
Although I may remove straps from an OWB holster for speed of the draw.
I'm not LE and don't need that level of retention.
It's a personal choice I don't necessarily recommend for others.

In the past I have used a Nemesis and had exactly what you are afraid of happening happen. Luckily it was in my own home on my couch, so no harm no foul. But it can happen.
There is no hard and fast rule to pocket holsters. Lots of people are happy with using the Nemesis, and that's great if it works well for them... But, If YOU want one with some retention so that you don't have to worry about the gun slipping out while in certain types of sitting positions, then you should get one that does that.
I make all my own leather holsters now, and I make them all to have retention. There is less in my pocket holsters then other types, but I still give them enough so that the gun can't fall out without a deliberate act on my part.
As an example...
( I do not sell gun holsters, so this is not a sales pitch)
Here is a pic of my LCP pocket holster. I made it with a "thumb push off" at the top and "hooks" to separate the gun from the holster.

What would keep it from being easy in.. right out your pant leg?

My Remora holds the gun, but because it is sticky, the gun can be removed without the holster coming out. Likewise, I made a leather pocket holster with a print flap that holds the gun but allows the gun to be removed without the holster pulling loose. My suggestion is to add a stitch to the holster if it is too loose. Use a good thread like Dacron B50 Bow string material or a good heavy 30# power pro fish line and a leather needle. Simple to fix a loose holster. Besides, it is in your pocket, so who cares how it looks as long as it functions exactly the way YOU want it to function. Take the time to get it just the way you like it.

I have never had this issue.................you have to be aware at all times, how your firearm is positioned in your pocket..just plopping down on a couch could dislodge it from the holster.............I have sat on every kind of furniture known to man, and just haven't had this problem.

Sticky is another brand just like Remora....they work well. I've moved from a pocket holster to PJ Holster IWB. Very comfortable, concealable and easier to draw. This is for my CW380

I have no interest in a pocket holster retaining a handgun if turned up side down. I want it to stay upright and in my pocket if the handgun is drawn. Its only there is keep it covered, upright and at the ready. With better than 26 years of mainly pocket carry its worked fine for me as described. I use a old slippery desanatis or a rather hard and kinda loose leather pocket holster depending on pants pocket.

Do you plan on doing handstands and flips while pocket carrying?

:der: I was thinking the same thing. They only problem I've ever had with my P380 and Desantis pocket holster is when practicing drawing at times the pistol and holster come out during a draw. I don't have the same problem with my PM9 with the same brand/style holster mainly because the slight size difference seems to prevent the holster from coming out with the gun.

I pocket carry with either a Remora or for retention, a Vedder pocket locker.

How do you keep a Remora from coming out of the pocket with the gun when you draw? I have a Remora and a DeSantis Superfly. The Superfly with the flap removed is still too bulky IMO, and the Remora works great for IWB and is slim, but it comes out of my pocket with the gun when I draw. I'm now thinking of trying an Alabama kydex pocket holster.

Sounds like all of you pocket carriers that are having WAY to many problems, ought to find another way to carry. It's not for everyone. I have never had ANY of these issues. My Desantis stays put every time. If you really want to pocket carry, practice putting your left/right hand on your outside pocket right before you draw......the holster will stay put. Hopefully, you won't need that hand for something else.

I was only trying to see if my weapon felt comfortable in the pocket. It did. I would use the Remora as it's intended(IWB). I chose the Vedder for actual pocket carry.

I use the same holster you do and I reach my hand in and use my thumb on the back of the grip and push off with my index finger to draw and my index finger end up in the right place to the side of the trigger guard and my hand is in a position that it fits through the opening of my pocket as I"m drawing. I hope the way I explained it it makes sense.

You can also use your thumb on the top of the holster as your drawing. Once the firearm is up out of the holster an inch or so, it will come right out without taking the holster with it. As I stated, I just draw normally, and I have no problems. My holster is really worn in.
