I have shot the Ruger snubbie in 454. The unported S&W in 460 should get your attention. If the bear doesn't kill you, the shock of the gun hitting your head during recoil just may.
S&W says it is primarily marketed to LE. What are the cops going to do with it. Ankle carry as a bug?

My S&W 629-2 4" 44 Mag Mountain Gun is as much of a hand cannon as I want.
Rented a 8.5" Ruger Super Redhawk 44 and thought the Smith would be fine.
I was wrong.
At 38 oz the 4" gun is a real Hand Cannon.
My hand would bleed before I could get 50 rounds of 240 gr hydra shoks out of it.
Had to have lock tight applied to the screws.
And eventually loosened the cylinder.

Snubbie 454, 460, 500?
Not for me brother...

I doubt if S&W is marketing the 460 to LE. I suspect that statement came from the person who wrote the article. Reporters cannot get even basic facts correct.

I tell you what, if I am ever in bear country, I don't want a revolver to be the line of defense between me and one of those critters in a bad mood. Give me a long gun that will not fail so I don't need a backup. If it did fail, by the time I got to the backup, I would probably be bear breakfast anyway.

Hardly a "pocket" gun. Great gee whiz values and not much else.

Sometimes the 454 is a fine pocket carry...

Beats being bear squat.

Have a friend with a Freedom arms 454 Casull. It has a Mag-na-ported 4 5/8 barrel and Decelerator grips to tame the recoil. Nether helps, that is the most vicious recoiling pistol I ever shot. I asked him why anyone needed so much gun and he said "bears".
Saw this story last year and said "Ohhhhhhh..."

My S&W 629 44 Mountain Gun, I think, was originally called The Back Packer.
Or something like that - LOL!
It was a light weight version of the standard 629 for hiking/camping.
Where some Big Bad might try to spoil the day.

At 38 oz it's certainly no trouble to carry.
But as others have stated,
I really want something more powerful than any handgun.
When faced with an angry bear.

Makes me wonder how our distant ancestors fought off bears with spears and arrows.

Hard to tell who won most of those battles.

Very freeeking carefully.

In my buddies case, he hunts elk in Montana and Wyoming in true wilderness. Having chased a few dying elk into very heavy brush he found these animals can get to places where his long gun (a Rem 700 in 338 WinMag) is not maneuverable at all. The pistol is the only practical weapon a hunter can have at that moment.

Point blank and cornered by such a bear, well it needs to be a real powerhouse.
