I'm interested in purchasing a safe for a single full-size handgun. Ideally, I'd be able to bolt it to my bedframe in a way that it would allow quick access to the weapon. Any recommendations?

There are a lot of choices out there. I'm just starting to look myself.

Not sure what you are looking for exactly....keyless or key? I purchased a simple key model nanovault from www.gunvault.com (http://www.gunvault.com). Actually I found it on Amazon or ebay for about $17 with free shipping. I purchased 3. One for each vehicle and one I can rotate between my home and RV while traveling. It comes with a cable, which can be cabled to your bed and hidden in your side table drawer or mounted to your bed as you describe. I only use it near the bed when we have kids in the house. Otherwise, I don't lock up my carry gun at night. It stays at the ready. There are quite a few models on the market. I suggest you google them and check them all out. There are quite a few posts on the forum about these critters too.

I'm not an advocate of any kind of safe for a bed side gun myself. I definitely would not go with a key unless you make a habit of unlocking it when you go to bed and locking it when you leave for childrens safety or very minimal theft deterrent.

There are some keypad combo safes that seem to be pretty quick under ideal circumstances but at o dark thirty, I usually can't remember who I am let alone a combination.

When the doors getting kicked in, or something goes bump in the night I want a handful of gun, not a safe.

I'd get a larger safe that will hold multiple handguns and valuables. Mount it solid to something and semi hidden. Get in the habit of taking your night gun out and having it nearby and locking it up if you don't take it with ya.

Did a forum search and didn't find anything relevant to a bolt-able single gun safe. I don't want to be hiding a key nor looking for a key when I really need access so I guess I'd prefer a biometric safe.

I'm with Bawanna on this one.
If something goes bump in the night?
I want immediate access to my nightstand gun.

They are all boltable if you have a drill. Make some holes in the back, bolt it on.

Hi 12GA and welcome to Kahrtalk....I currently have a Gunvault single full size pistol or 2 small ones that I like pretty well....I paid about $100.00 for the original one which used 8 AA batteries but there was a defect in the circuit board and it ate the batteries in a couple weeks or so....I contacted Gunvault and they sent me a new one that uses a single 9 volt battery and so far it has held up fine....It has a 4 button keypad on top you can enter any combination into and it's pretty easy to use in the dark by feel...

It has holes in the back to mount to something solid or you can use a cable around something....This safe could be opened by someone with a pry bar and really isnt to be used to prevent theft so mush as to be able to keep a loaded gun handy and out of childrens hands or others you don't want to handle your loaded gun without you being there....

I like it well enough for what it's useful for...Good luck and again welcome to the forum!

Thanks for the welcome and the recommendation. I'm looking at Gunvault's website now and it appears as though a few of their safes would fit my need. The biometric ones are pricey but I'm tempted...

Gunvaults are good and I forget the model I purchased but I only keep my house gun locked up during the day when not at home. At night it is at the bedside ready for use if it ever is needed. The thing that really sucks is reprogramming it after you replace the batteries. We ended up with one of the models that you have the four buttons and then you punch in a code.

If you do some research on the biometric Gunvault models they aren't so good...I have the GV1000S model and it has gone up in price since I first bought it but I'm happy with it...I still have the original 8 AA battery model that I just use a key with since the batteries don't hold up in it....The Gunvault people made good on the problem and sent me the 9 Volt safe that works well and didn't charge me for it or want the old one back....

I currently use the Gunvault mini vault deluxe. Just recently replaced the batteries after 2 yrs. Didn't need changing, I just changed them anyway. They recommend once a year. Also have 2 keys, one stays inside the safe, one on my key ring. I use it to store 2 firearms, one full size semi, and one revolver. Cabled to bed. I wouldn't want to have to try and pry this thing open. I guess it could be done, but not quickly, nor easily. The cable basically slows them down a bit more. Since I have an adjustable bed, they won't be lifting or taking the bed either. 4 touch buttons, and an unending amount of codes and variations, since you can program in the touching of 2 or more keys simultaneously. I also keep it plugged in with the electrical adaptor. Batteries for emergency only. Works very well, for what I need it for. I can also open it in the dark, with ease, but................................I always have one on the nightstand.

I am going to slightly disagree with the Colonel. I installed one of these behind the nightstand by my bed. http://www.fas1safe.com/

At night, I put my PMJ9 in the nightstand and go ahead and open this thing. I have a high capacity pistol ready to go within easy reach. Its rear night sight even helps me find it.

That safe is also sturdy. In the morning, I put the PMJ9 in my pocket and lock the pistol safe. My pistol is secure from kids, visitors, etc. It is also pretty secure period. This safe is very sturdy and bolted through to floor joists and studs in the wall.

I do agree with the Colonel that I don't want to do any combination at night, but the safe allows me to keep a high cap pistol around and not spend the hassle of twice a day getting into the big safe, which I would not bother to do.

The lesser safes, like Gunvault, I can open with a hammer, a rock, or about anything. So, this system works for me FWIW.

The FAS1 looks close to ideal for my purposes. Nice to have options.

I'd love to see this! The fas1safe doesn't look any "safer".http://kahrtalk.com/images/icons/icon12.gif

I have the FAS1 also. I'm in San Antonio so I picked mine up in person from the owner. I can't say enough good things about this safe. No batteries or electronics to fail and no key to keep track of at night. Granted a simplex lock isn't necessarily secure, but I wanted something to deter access rather than secure it from theft. Shot the **** with the owner for a bit and he's a really cool guy.

How complex can one make the access? I'm not looking to make it hard on myself but just trying to get an idea of how secure I can make it.

It depends on what you consider complex. There are 5 buttons. The combination can only use each button once, but you can use multiple buttons at a time. So for example the default on the lock is 2+4, 3. So you press 2 and 4 simultaneously then 3 and turn the knob. The combination can be as simple a one button or any combination of the five.

Ex:
1,5,4,2,3
1+4,2,3+5
1+3+5,2
1,3,2,4+5
Etc

Only thing I've run across that I'd consider trying, that seems fast enough and brainless-deep-sleep enough, is the gunvault speedsafe.

http://www.gunvault.com/gun-safes/speedvault.html

But I haven't bought one yet. I use a barska biometric for my carry guns (P9/TP9) and my HD gun (CZ P-01). Just makes my day/night easy. But at night, I also don't want to have to muddle with anything, so I use one of these in the middle of the headboard, down between the mattress and boxspring.

Anybody that wants it has to climb over us to get to it. Nobody knows its there but me and the wife. I have access to it from in the bed, dark, just by feel. P-01 goes here every night, then back into the Barska while I'm out and about w/ the P9 or TP9.

In addition to leaving my guns at the ready (not in the safe) at night, I use the small safes in my car, cabled to the seat for times that I can not take my gun into a specific location (ie., school to pick up my grandkids, etc...). Otherwise my SD gun is on me or by my side at night. These little cable safes are only a deterrent to slow someone down from stealing my gun if locked up. Bad guys can just as easy steal the whole car, so why bother? NYS gun laws require they be locked up if they are not on me. For optimal security, I have a big gun vault in the house. The little bed side and car vault are simply a quick and dirty lock up....Not totally secure from theft, but out of little hands, so I don't need to worry. Just wanted to clear up my application of these little safes. Because of the way I use the little safes, I would not spend any more money on a biometric or touch sensitive model. Not worth the expense to me. The key entry works just fine for temporary lock up and the big vault is the mother load.

I don't know why, but for some reason I'm as excited about the arrival of this new safe as I would be for a new gun. :)
