Was wandering around at the firearms section of my local Academy store Saturday buying ammo when I saw a good deal on a S&W SD40 VE. $279. I own Kahr's, Sigs and Walther handguns but wanted a 'beater' for my remote fishing/camping trips. This seemed to fit the bill. Lots of plastic (I'm on or off the coast in salty environments frequently). DAO only and striker fired. I had read that this pistol, which falls between the Sigma and M&P series, was very reliable right out of the box but had a fairly crappy trigger pull of @ 8 pounds. But for $20 I could get an Apex trigger kit for it and drop it down to under 6. Took the plunge and just got back from the range. Ran a bunch of Blazer steel case through it without a hiccup. I'm used to long trigger pulls as my EDC is a CW45 and while the Smith is not as buttery a trigger as the Kahr it's really not bad. Not sure I even need to upgrade it. Had no issues wearing out targets from 10 yards. Didn't come with a case but did have an extra mag (14 rounders). Anyhow I wanted you guys to know it seems like an excellent budget gun.http://img.tapatalk.com/d/14/02/11/pysygeru.jpg

I had one of those, it will take the Sigma mags. The trigger will smooth out also. Not a bad gun, and it worked, I may get another when I get some more green to play with.

Long time no communication jlott. Let the gang know how things are in your new line of work when you find the time. Actually not so new anymore neither, been awhile.

That's a strange looking firearm. The slide is where the butt should be. Looks normal when I do a hand stand. How'd ya do that? :)

Thanks for the 'heads up'....or 'heads down' I should say. That's the position it was in when I was shooting it. My new 'gangsta' technique.

I learned how to deify gravity at an early age. My father said I was a child progeny, or something to that effect. :)

I've been thinking about getting a Hi Point for a truck/boat side arm. Ugly as can be, cheaply made, feels like crap in my hands...
but they are dirt cheap AND they work.
I like your Smith much better!

I have a HiPoint carbine 4095 (40S&W) which is a hoot to shoot. Goes bang every single time and has a lifetime, 'no fooling' warranty. So don't rule out HiPoint. But I also luv my S&W M&P 40 Pro 5" tack driver. Tough comparison and both companies are made in the USA.:Amflag2:

What closed the deal for me WAS the way it felt in my hand. That's one reason I don't own a Glock, which I know is an otherwise fine pistol.

We just did a tigger job on one of these and it is 100% better. Polish and remove those "extra" pesky springs. Now it feels like a real shooter.

Awwww, man just what I didn't want to hear. Guess I'll have to buy the Apex kit and have a gunsmith drop it in for me (little springy thingy's and me don't get along well). I like my gun the way it is but then again I liked that Fergie singer chick too before she underwent major upgrades.....

We didn't do the apex. Go to YouTube and look it up. It's actually removing a spring that isn't needed. What makes the trigger feel like it's 10lbs
