I saw this over on glockforum.com and thought it was interesting to hear some of the background of our past and present military.

Post up your job title(s), ratings, MOS, AFSC, etc.

I was in the Air Force as a 462X0/2W1X1, Aircraft Armament Systems on the F-15 at Langley Air Force Base, Virginia from '87-90 in the 48th Fighter Interceptor Squadron.

Retrained into 304X6/2E1X1, Satellite and Wideband Communications Equipment, and was stationed at Offutt AFB, Nebraska working AFSAT. Then it was Camp Humphreys in South Korea working mobile SATCOM in the field. Finally, fixed SATCOM at Buckley AFB, Colorado.

After getting out of active duty in '96, I waited nine years to go back in to the Air National Guard to work SATCOM again for ~3 years in a mobile Space Warning Squadron, 137th SWS.

I love my time in the military and miss it.

What did you folks do in the military? Post up.

I was a gunners mate on a destroyer in the early 70's. I worked on a 5" and was the PO in charge of small arms. Initially we had M1's, BAR's and Thompsons. Eventually we off loaded those and got M14's. Spent one westpac cruise to the Gulf of Tonkin (firing naval gunfire support among other things) and a second to the Gulf of Oman (chasing a carrier).

My Dad was drafted in WWII and stayed in after the war to make a career of it. So my story starts in 1946 in Ft. Benning, GA, where I was born. As an Army brat I lived mostly at Ft. Bragg, NC, with side trips to Panama for grades 3-5 and to Okinawa for grades to 9-10. My Dad retired from Active duty as a Major the year I graduated from high school.

I then went to West Point and graduated in 1969 as an Infantry officer. Following that I went to Airborne school and then Berlin, Germany, before heading to Vietnam. After Nam I qualified for the Special Forces, but eventually resigned my commission after fulfilling my obligation. Just prior to leaving the Army I came to faith in Jesus Christ which is partly why I felt led get out.

I eventually went to seminary in Dallas, TX, to study for the ministry. After that I worked in corporate America for a while and then took a church up in Bangor, ME. While in Maine I joined the National Guard as a Chaplain and served 17 years there. I rose to become the State Chaplain and retired from the Guard as a full bird.

We left Maine and moved to England for three years, and now I'm pastoring a church in Rockville, CT. God and the military have been good to me my whole life. Thanks for the opportunity to share my story.

I joined the USAF out of HS in August 1964. I had been planning that for years. I went down on a Saturday to sign up for the Army warrant officer helicopter pilot program, but the Army recruiting office was closed, so I went ahead and joined the AF. That was probably one of the best things I ever did. We lost a LOT of helicopters over there!

My first job was learning Arabic for a year at DLIWC at Monterey, CA. Then the AF had too many Arabic linguists, so to get out of Goodfellow AFB, Texas, after all of the tech schools for using the language, I volunteered for a short course in Vietnamese. After all of the tech schools following that 4-month course in DC, I was on my way to Yokota AB, Japan, when the 6-Days war kicked off around April '67 and the AF needed more Arabic linguists, but I was in a higher priority language then.

After a few months in Japan we started a new squadron on Okinawa and I flew missions out of there on the RC-135’s and also RC-130’s while TDY to Da Nang and Cam Rahn Air Bases. I was at Da Nang for the First Tet Offensive the end of January 1968 as our Detachment Project NCO, having just made SSGT the first of January… exciting times.

I got out in August of ’68 as a SSGT(E-5) and went to college on the GI Bill and working part time. I graduated in ’72, went to OTS and then Navigator training at Mather AFB, CA. I got into the B-52’s just after they returned from SEA early in ’74. I was at Dyess AFB, TX for almost 9 years(Radar Navigator or Bombardier & Instructor RN in B-52D’s & B-52H’s), then 3 years in the command post at Zweibruecken AB, West Germany. I met my wife-to-be there and we’re coming up on our 28th anniversary in a few months. We married in March after I returned in February ’86.

I had to get re-qualified in the B-52G out at Castle AFB, CA, and spent a couple of years at Loring AFB, ME, until retirement as an Captain(O-3E) the end of June ’88. While in the BUFF’s I had several TDY’s to England and got to fly all over Europe… high and low level… fantastic to fly through areas I had traveled over there… climbing up the ladder to look out and UP at the mountains we were flying between.:D

Actually I signed up for AF OTS after graduating college in '67. Passed all the tests ok, then went down to the San Antonio induction center for the physical.
That's when I found out I had some medical problems that disqualified me from serving. It was a terrible disappointment, as that had been my planned career path.
Didn't feel abnormal, and those problems didn't affect me until 33 years later.

I planned on enlisting AF after high school graduation but my brother (Army) was shipped to Vietnam the winter of my senior year, I was only 17 at graduation, and Mom said no way (needed her signature).
Went to college instead, got a degree in engineering, and joined the Navy. Did not need her signature any more. Went the nuclear power route - submarines. My longest continuous submerged cruise was 73 days.
By the way, submarines are called 'boats', not ships.
Took this shot one day when I was Officer of the Deck getting underway from Holy Loch, Scotland shortly before we shut the hatches.

LOVE the A10. The Warthog's purpose was very clear and so was its design. Everything about that plane was just sick. If I was on the ground and that thing was after me, I would die of a heart attack before you got to me. I cannot imagine being on the receiving end of that weapon system.

I trained as a an intercept recording systems repairman, with the Army Security Agency. Was stationed in Korea at Humphreys and up at Camp Red Cloud as the signal security maintenance person. I arrived in Korea in 71 and left in 73.

One day our CWO of Electronic Maintaince took myself and another Mech over to Osan AB. For some reason we got to see what the USAF was doing with the AQM-34Q Combat Dawn Firebee. They were flying it with a pilot at a console and I think they said there was a another console that was airborne in the mother ship. Was way more exciting than fixing tape recorders.

Years later I bought an R390 receiver which I still have.

Technically a boat is a vessel carried by a ship. This would be a neat trick with a 95,000 ton carrier or an 8000 ton 688 for that matter. However, I was not a part of the surface Navy. I was a Naval Aviator [a brown shoe if you please] and we did things our own way. The 'boat' was just a place to park our jets and chill between mission.

A a radio man my issue weapon was a 1911. I opted to also carry a rifle which was for 9 months an M14 until we were finally issued M16s. That's why I still have a love for the 1911
and have a RIA 1911 now mainly for target shooting and home protection. It is too big for concealed carry and that is why I got my CM9 for concealed carry. After a lot of research on what to buy I got my CM9. I love everything about it and carry it daily.

LT - USN - Most of my hours racked up driving a Beechcraft T-34c Mentor (I was a bit of a bagger) I loved it.

Shortly before returning to civilian life, an aviator buddy of mine flew into town in a T-28. Told me he came to give me a ride before I got out.
IT WAS GREAT! He would explain a maneuver and then we would perform it. Yeah, he gave me a barf bag which I used after about 15 minutes. He asked if I wanted to quit but then he would explain the next maneuver and I just had to do it. Three more encounters with the bag before we were done, but what a hoot!

My only other experience in a small aircraft was in college. The president of the flying club took me on a flight a few hundred feet above Mt. Rushmore. It was an incredible view.

It looks like you may have been on a 1052 class DE. At least those weapons systems look familiar. Which one? I was on one out of Long Beach '72-'74.

Feb. '66 to Feb. '72. Last two years were Ready Reserve to finish my contract. Communications 2nd class (CTT2). Served in Guantanamo Bay, Cuba for a year and Todendorf, Germany for 2+ years. Schools in Pensacola, FL and Fort Meade, MD (NSA). After completing 6 year contract I was done until 1980 when I needed a part time job to supplement our family income. Joined the USNR where I drilled for 12 more years also as a CT. Got too old and too fat to keep up with the younger folks so 1992 was my last year.

Thanks! And thank ALL of YOU for YOUR service, too. We all made a difference. And thanks, too, to all of you who volunteered but were denied the chance to serve due to reasons beyond your control.

Yeah, that includes the "Colonel", too!

PS: I love languages and have studied many. I've studied as many as four at a time including English.

Wynn, you should have a sit down with old Jocko. Maybe you could teach him to speak English. I'm sure that he could teach you a few new words. Probably has a few choice ones for me, too. :)
