marking magazines

I have heard a lot of people mark their magazines so they can rotate them in between range visits and let one "rest" by sitting unloaded.

I have always just gone to the range and gotten them mixed up and thought I would just leave it to chance.

Do any of you mark their magazines to keep track of this? And if so, how do you mark them? I really do not like the idea of scratching a number on the side , and am afraid if I put a dab of paint on them it will not survive the first cleaning.

I use a sharpie and it holds up fine. I use dots. Something like * ** *** for mag 1, 2, and 3. Then it's not so obvious either.

I bought my P9 used and it came with four standard 7 round magazines with the plastic floorplates. Each of the floorplates are numbered 1 thru 4 on the bottom of each magazine. Kahr does not list these floorplates on their web site, they sure are nice ,too bad I can't find more.

You might not need to rest them but it is always good to have the magazines marked so if you start having problems you know which magazine you were using and that immediately helps with the troubleshooting. I personally use paint dots in the same style at yqtszhj.

I do mark my magazines, and like you, I want to do so in a manner that will withstand regular cleaning, yet not permanently scar the mags. I've tried markers and paint pens, but the best solution I've found is a vinyl label.

I apply the label to the edge of the magazine, not the base plate. That way, it is not visible when carried. I'm careful to place the label in a location that is least susceptible to wear and that does not interfere with the witness holes in the mag. Perhaps it's just my imagination, but the slick surface of the label seems to allow the mags to drop free more easily. Even if it doesn't improve operation, the label certainly does not impair insertion and extraction of the magazine.

I haven't always labeled my magazines. I started the practice just a few years ago, for a couple reasons. First, it provides valuable information in diagnosing stoppages and identifying troublesome mags. That was never an issue with most of my guns, but was helpful when I started shooting Kahr pistols. It didn't take long to identify which magazines I could trust for carry, and which should be relegated to training. And honestly, a magazine that is more likely to induce stoppages is a great training aid, but it should be labeled for training only, and not CCW.

A second reason to mark mags is to make sure they all find their way home after a training session. This is especially true when taking classes. It's not uncommon to find several people in a given course, shooting the same make/model. After a drill which has students shooting on the move and clearing stoppages, the deck may be littered with magazines. It's nice to know which ones are mine.

I number all of my mags. I use a sharpie or an electric engraver. If the sharpie marks get dull I just remark them.

I mark them so that I can keep track of any issues that may happen. If you put enough ammo down range stuff can/will happen.

Tinman, you also need to mark on the magazines which way to insert the rounds. There are some liberals out there and they are easily confused. :behindsofa:

Bright colored nail polish on black Glock mags. (I have 2 Kahr mags but they're easy to tell apart.)

I don't rotate, but if I start having feed problems I want to be able to tell which mag I was using.

Ad agencies = liberals. Someone in HK should have caught it but from what I understand the agency was running late and nobody checked. However for me, HK's are still #1. And yes, that was what I was thinking about when I posted above.

Sorry about the ambiguity. My reference was to resting magazines. I have no problem with someone marking their magazines in some way. I for one name all of my magazines. The one that gives me the most trouble I've named Jocko! :)
