Man Accidentally Kills Self With Gun During Demonstration On Gun Safety

A man from Independence Township, Michigan, accidentally shot himself to death on Monday while teaching his girlfriend about gun safety, the Oakland Press reports (http://www.theoaklandpress.com/general-news/20140224/independence-township-man-shoots-kills-himself-while-demonstrating-gun-safety-deputies-say).
The 36-year-old man, whose name has not been released, was showing his girlfriend how his three handguns are safe when they aren’t loaded, according to the Detroit Free Press (http://www.freep.com/article/20140224/NEWS03/302240114/independence-township-man-shoots-self-in-head). He was attempting to demonstrate the safety of the handguns by holding them to his head and pulling the trigger.
The third gun fired, and the man was struck in the head. He was pronounced dead at the scene.
Three children ages 7, 10, and 12 were in the home, but did not witness the shooting, according to reports. The man's girlfriend told authorities (http://detroit.cbslocal.com/2014/02/24/man-shoots-himself-in-the-head-while-demonstrating-gun-safety/) he had been drinking most of the day before the incident took place.
This isn't the first time a gun safety demonstration has gone wrong. In January 2013, 18-year-old Florida resident Alexander Xavier Shaw died (http://tbo.com/pinellas-county/st-pete-man--dies-after-accidentally-shooting-self-in-head-603022) doing a similar demonstration. Richard M. McLean (http://www.wnem.com/story/18836457/witness-man-demonstrating-guns-safety-shot-self-in-face), a 22-year-old from Michigan, died in a similar fashion in June 2012. Missouri resident James Looney, 40, was also teaching his girlfriend about gun safety when he shot himself (http://www.foxnews.com/story/2009/09/22/missouri-man-teaching-girlfriend-about-gun-safety-shoots-himself-in-head/) in the head in September 2009.

Never point a firearm at anything you aren't willing to shoot. So....this all works out quite well for me.

I have to wonder if their heads were acting in a threatening manner.

If these guys are examples of people who don't fear guns ... I hope I don't ever stop being a little nervous when handling mine.

Thread should be re-named Alcohol Safety

Yep, drinking and firearms don't mix well. Rev Ray, I'm not nervous with my guns, but I sure do respect them an awful lot. I've had safety taught to me since I was a pup. And I did a stint as a young hunter safety instructor before I got sick. That really helped reinforce my safety standards. Nothing like having a roomful of eyes watching your every move to make sure you don't do unsafe things, like put your finger on the trigger while showing kids a gun, and stuff like that.

In over fifty years of handling them not one of my guns has even attempted to shoot me. Safe gun handling is no accident. :)

As it's been said........" No such thing as an accident, always negligence."

I have a mantra. After the second beer never operate anything with whirling blades....a categorical metaphor which includes motor vehicles, hand saws, pruning saws, firearms, etc.

Ok, so:
Verify the gun is not loaded, even if someone tells you it is.
Repeat step 1
Keep your finger away from the trigger until ready to shoot.
Keep ammo away from the gun until ready to shoot.
Do not point the gun at anything you don't want destroyed.
Always be mindful of what lies behind the target.
And finally:
Place barrel against temple and pull trigger repeatedly
...wait...what?

in our tire?gun/sorting goods business there is a hole in the mens restroom door where a customer "claims" his gun dropped out of his pants and went bank. It was a J frame smith, and the hole angle sure looked like he was sitting on the sh!tter and playing withthe gun and BANG.

He never came back again. I can remember our local pool owner years ago in the mens dressinbg room. the sign read. WE DON'T SWIM IN UR STOOL, PLEASE DON'T PEE IN OUR POOL..Just sayin
