Hello everyone. I'm in the market for a small single stack 9mm as my back-up gun. I have been reading a lot and it looks like the KAHR CM9/PM9 is the way to go for me. I'm hoping to learn a little more about the gun before I pull the trigger and get one. Thanks for all the info so far. What a great site!

Welcome, Ifly, you'll find all the Kahr info you could ever want here ... though not from me. BTW, are you one of the elite 5,000 who just received your Illinois carry permit?

Hello and welcome from another in IL.:)

Don't discount the CW9. My wife has one and it is a fine shooting machine.

Nope not me. I don't need a carry permit. I'm a federal agent. However, I think I will apply for my carry permit because my agency only allows us to carry certain firearms and the KAHR is not on the list. So in order for me to carry it off duty I would have to carry it utilizing the CCW.

Welcome to the forum, iflyem1. My first polymer pistol was a LNIB PM9 DLC with factory night sights. It's a super pistol. I've added 4 more polymer Kahrs and have found that I prefer the P/CW size for IWB carry. The P40 and P9 are that size with full grips for me. The PM45 is a tad fatter, but it fits in the same Crossbreed MiniTuck holster that I got for the PM9.

I replaced the polymer magazine bases with the black metal base kit and had to add a 3/32" by 3/4" inner diameter O-ring to prevent pinches, but that reduces the grip protrusion a bit for concealment. I carry the largest extended-grip Kahr mag for the caliber in an OWB Kydex holder on the opposite side.

Pictures of all 5. First... top row from left PM45 and Mag-na-ported P40.
Second row... P9 with ported barrel, PM9, and then the P380.

Next photos... from left PM45, P40, P9, PM9, and P380.

The CM/CW are cheaper versions and include one mag and less features and tooling and the regular rifling to keep cost down.

Oh, here's my normal info for new mwmbers:

Welcome to the Kahrtalk forum supported by K a h r Arms.
Here are a few essential links and things to do BEFORE you take your new pistol to the range, and ESPECIALLY BEFORE taking it apart and trying to re-assemble it! The Kahr is a different design… 6-7 unique patents cover the Kahrs. I’m not trying to imply that you don’t know anything about guns, but many don’t know anything about the Kahrs and some of the things you can do to damage or cause malfunctions of your new, or new-to-you Kahr pistol.

First, if you don’t have a manual, yet, or one didn’t come with your pistol, you can view it and/or download the pdf file here:
http://www.kahr.com/PDF/kahrmanual.pdf

Please watch one of these videos FIRST! These videos can point out possible problem areas and emphasize correct procedures!

K series:

There are many links on fixing problems listed in several places… under the New Member or Kahr Tech sub-forums. To start, a very good one:

Proper Prepping of a new Kahr:

http://www.kahrtalk.com/showthread.php?t=14748

A very handy one is the Kahr Lubrication Diagram:
http://kahrtalk.com/showthread.php?t=14750

Many of your questions can be answered in these areas and you can learn how your Kahr works and not damage it with improper handling.

Another great resource for information on Kahrs... Archives of Magazine and Internet Reviews for Kahr pistols by industry experts. They test these pistols and report on their views and the ammo they tested in it. This is a good way to find ammo that might fit your needs along with accuracy and feeding in the pistol... usually from a rest with velocity and energy, as well as penetration and expansion sometimes... very informational.

Frequently asked questions: http://www.kahr.com/faq.asp?

One very important bit of advice: Hold the Kahr pistol firmly when firing OR CHAMBERING a round. These compact pistols need all of the force they can get from the slide to get a round into the chamber successfully. If you don't hold the pistol firmly, part of the needed momentum is transferred to MOVING THE PISTOL and the top round will DIVE and jam into the right side of the feed ramp. The weak hand, over hand rack method gives the best grip and a firm rack will give you the best chance at chambering a round.

Use the weak hand fingers over the slide(clear of the ejection port), thumb along the slide and pointing to the rear. Use the gun hand to simultaneously firmly push the gun as you give a vigorous rack with the weak hand and cleanly release the slide as it reaches the rear limit and is "snatched" from the weak hand. This approximates a real rack from firing and beats the slide release method WHEN executed properly. Much more strength can be exerted when this is done closer to the body.

Here's a video on that. The first part is what I'm talking about:

There are many helpful members here most of the time who might be able to help you, but as anywhere, there are many opinions and not all are correct. Be mindful of this before doing anything drastic to modify your pistol!

PS: I keep thinking of stuff to add and help new members... and am trying to cover most of the popular subjects. Yes, it's repetitious to many, but possibly not to all new members. This approach is easier than having to look up every tidbit for each new member or question that arises. :)

What part of IL are you?
I'm just on the southside of Chicago.
I have a CW45 that I can't wait to start carrying! I'm thinkin about a Cm9 for pocket carry.
There's a lot of good info here!

Thanks for all the info guys. It will be very useful!
I am in the southwest suburbs and I'm glad IL finally decided that the citizens here have a right to protect themselves! I am a member of the NRA and a strong proponent of the second amendment. I have 3 kids that I need to look after and make sure they have the same rights as I do as they grow older.

I think I will be getting the CM9/PM9, just have to decide which one. I know what the differences are and I know they are negligible. I do however like the PM9 a little more but don't know if I want to spend the extra $100-200 for it.

Get the CM9 and put the extra dollars into break in ammo and take the kids out for pizza a couple of times.

Good luck!

I have been seeing very good prices on new CM9's for around $360 on GB. Very hard to beat a deal like that!

Just bought the CM9 and CW380. I figured there wasn't that much difference for me between the CM9 and PM9 functionally. With the extra cash I save I decided to get another gun so I got a CW380 to go with the CM9!
