current situation...
i have a sa 1911 in 9mm that i shoot exclusively. Also have a sa milspec 45 that i use occasionally but use most with a 22 conversion. i always wonder if it's best to have only one cal but the 22 conversion does not fit on the 9mm.
Let's take out the 22 conversion in this discussion for now. Would you sell off the 45 to buy another 9 or buy ammo.
If you were to buy another 9mm, would you buy the same make and model and finish or another brand?
FYI, my 9 is stainless and the 45 is parkerized.
thanks for readind

I would not sell my 45, WHY, because I would not own one of those big ass fokkers.
but u have a nice set up with ther 22 conversion, so I would say keep it. wow a 1911 9mm owner. don't hear to much from u guys.
Keep the 45,just don't shoot it. Just sayin

All I can offer you is my experience ... which is that any lines you draw in the sand will eventually be behind you. Less than a year ago I had no guns and only intended to own one. Following that I decided that I needed one upstairs and one downstairs. But all along I always knew I would only own Kahrs and only own 9mm's. That was until I held and fired a Makarov and also discovered .380's, which carried more rounds in the same size. My point is simply to say that whatever you decide for yourself today will probably change tomorrow.

I keep a bunch of calibers --- you never know what ammo will be available and when and for how much. We just recently went thru a serious 9mm dry spell and are still in a bit of a .22 slump. I'm not sure why you would want to limit yourself. Unless you are concerned about bugging out with a bunch of one caliber. I'd rather grab an assortment of guns so I can use whatever I can scrounge.
Oh, and dang-it RevRay...you are wise. :)

Let me make myself perfectly clear....
Ah everybody knows where I stand on this.
Send me the 45 and the 22 conversion and I'll send you a K9.

I agree with jocko..keep the 45.. BUT get rid of the 1911 9mm and send ME all your 9mm ammo :D

I also have a variety of calibers .22, 38/357 9mm, .40, .44, and .45. I figure this way if it ever gets to the point of scrounging for ammo, I'll have something that shoots the most popular calibers. I try to keep at least a couple hundred rounds on hand for each caliber, but have got down to slim pickings in .357.

Wow! I am ashamed of you guys trying to grab this poor fella's prize handguns! :hungry:
The three calibers you currently have, sir, .22LR, 9mm, and .45 ACP are the mainstays of the handgun world, not counting revolvers.
If your existing pistols are trouble free, I believe that you would be well advised to keep them. Three calibers are enough to protect you against unexpected shortages of one caliber or another. At the same time, three calibers is not so many that purchasing a reasonable inventory of each is too large an investment. We are NOT wealthy and that works for my wife and me.
Not counting rifle or revolver ammo, we stock three calibers (.45 ACP, .40 S&W, and .22 LR) in reasonable abundance. This allows frequent range visits without the inconvenience of searching for ammo. And, that's a good thing. http://home.mindspring.com/~justsomeguy/icon_lol.gif
Hope this helps . . .

Jocko is a bit of a caliber snob. Do not become a caliber snob. You will end up preferring sheep.
I agree with owning more than one caliber for the reasons Tman stated above. Prior to this last go round many folks thought they would only need the most popular calibers should the SHTF situation ever come about, as they could "always" find what they needed. The first sidearm calibers to disappear from the shelves were 9mm, .40 S&W and .45 ACP. Soon to follow was .22lr. I could always find .32 ACP and .41 mag throughout the drought.
Same happened with the "popular" rifle rounds, but again I could find .32 Win Special and .30-40 Krag.
That being said, don't paint yourself into a corner and just get whatever you like to shoot. Remember, variety is the spice of life!

Here's the key: Flexibility in case of future ammo shortages in one caliber.
Guns are made to be bought, not sold. Keep 'em.

I have one 380, one 9mm, two 40's, and Fifteen 45's. The 380, an LCP, was a gift from my son and I have to keep it. The 9mm, a PM9, is probably the best pocket pistol around, and I need one pocket pistol. Of the 40's, one is my HDW, an HK USP, and is excellent for that duty. The other is an MK40 which is about my favorite pistol and one that I refuse to part with. [bring on the MK45] As for the 45's, that's my caliber and all I would own if I didn't have a legitimate reason for the others.

I gave up on trying to keep the variety of ammunition down a long time ago.
I went out and bought an ammunition locker. That gives me plenty of room for more guns and more types of ammo.

I think that a real man has one of every caliber. One of these days I'm going to have to buy a .40S&W, so that I can be a real man.

What he said. If all you owned was .22 you would have been hating life the last 12 months.

You're talking personal preference all the way.
I'm thinking you're going to get a bunch of varied answers from everybody.
But truly only you can make those choices for yourself.
I usually go with my gut in these matters.

I believe in only one design for carry but after that I shoot .22lr , 380, 9mm, 357 mag , 40sw , 44 mag and 45 acp in sa, da , combo of the two and striker fired handguns. And then reload for as many as you can.
Life is to short for just one type, brand or caliber of firearm.

I believe in only one design for carry .
+1 for that. All my carry guns are long, smooth DA with no safeties. Calibers: .380, 9mm, .40SW and .357/38sp.
No .45 because Kahr doesn't make a steel one (yet). ;) And I haven't found ANY pistol DA trigger as good as a Kahr. :)
It is good to have options.

You could try to find an old Para Ordnance with the LDA trigger. You can thank me later. :)

Got one and you are right...it's the closest I've found. But not as good and does have a safety. So it's a range gun. Yep. Variety is good.

The ammo shortage after Sandy Hook changed a lot of peoples thinking about what caliber might be the best....Ammo in Georgia Walmarts is starting to come back but still spotty at best with 22lr still hard to find if at all....I bought a .40 cal Kahr and M&P only for the reason that during the shortage I would see .40 cal way more often than any of the other pistol ammo and most times .40 was the only thing available so I said .40 it is even though I like a .45 acp pistol better...
In rifle ammo I could always find .270 Winchester but never any .223 .308 or 30-06 available so I decided to buy a .270 Ruger American rifle even though a 30-06 would be a better choice but if ammo gets scarce again and I believe it will then having something to hunt with is better than having the finest rifle in the world and nothing to feed it...
One other lesson I have learned the hard way is to never ever get rid of ammo if you sell or trade a gun...back before the scare I traded in a LCP .380 and I had a bunch of all kinds of ammo for it which I gave away thinking I would never need .380 again but the scare changed all that and .380 was impossible to find so I realized I should have kept it for trading if nothing else....I also gave away about 200 rounds of carry .357 ammo because i didn't own a .357 revolver and needed the space but now realize that was also a dumb move....Hang on to any ammo you may have, you may need to use it for currency if the SHTF....

True that. I find it hard to find carry 38 ammo that isn't +P. I want standard stuff for the wifes J frame and I don't want to shoot +P thru my Colt Cobra.
I like to carry store bought ammo but just might have to so reloads.

thank you. some damn smart people on this forum.:amflag:
I'm feeling inadequate now... I only have .22LR, 9MM and 45ACP pistols...
45ACP is what I prefer, but shooting often means I'll have to sell a kidney on the blackmarket to sustain that. 9mm is about $10 a box LESS than 45ACP for cheap target rounds, 50rd count. 22LR, honestly, I've hard 22LR for years and haven't boughten any recently. I'm down to maybe 300-400 rounds of 22LR so maybe I should conserve it a bit since everyone acts like it's impossible to find.
I don't know why, but the .40SW just never appealed to me. I really have no desire to own anything chambered in 40sw.
10MM though, yeah... maybe a 10mm glock... For, y'know, science.

I think my next carry addition will be a Ruger revolver in 454 Casull/45lc. That should be scientific. :D. I got my heart set on shooting some 300gr Buffalo Bore 45lc.
Why ANYONE would want only one caliber.... :amflag:

Sounds fun!
Only benefit of having one caliber would be, well, everything takes the same ammo! Reload? One die, one press, etc, etc. Can keep caches of bullets burried in your woods for a SHTF scenario and know that whatever gun you grabbed as you fled your house will eat that ammo. Etc etc.
Pew pew pew.
