Had a great day at the range today shooting my recently upgraded XDs9 and my CM9. The best thing about the XDs recall is that I bought the CM9! It is much more enjoyable to shoot.

Anyway, later I'm taking it down to clean and the recoil spring assembly shoots halfway across the room. The guide rod and inner spring have separated and the little nut that holds it together is no where to be found. I really believe it must be on the shooting range floor and I just didn't notice it missing until I disassembled the gun.

I've ordered another assembly but it appears to work fine without the nut. Do you think it's safe to carry in the mean time?

Yep! It would be wise to protect the muzzle with a well designed holster so that no fabric get caught in the threads. Otherwise . . . no worries.

Kahr will replace things like that for free. The recoil assembly is a unit and they don't sell the nuts, but you can sure make a replacement and turn it down while it's chucked in a drill using a file and sandpaper to make it round.

The one on my PM45 flew off and disappeared at the range. I emailed service@kahr.com with an explanation and a picture. They sent me a new part.

From FAQ's at kahr.com:

Q. I can repair my own gun and do not wish to send it to the factory. Can I get a replacement part?

A. Simply contact the service department at 508-795-3919 or send an e-mail to service@kahr.com to receive a replacement part.

Meanwhile I made a replacement nut for a spare.

Good thinking. Nice work.

Lock Tite.

It comes from the factory with locktite and no, do not carry that gun with a part missing. If the recoil spring decides to exit through the guide rod hole the gun won't function. It isn't reliable in it's present condition.

Thanks for the help. I ordered another spring assembly before I read that they would send me one for nothing....so I wrote them and now have two on the way!

It doesn't hurt to have a spare. If you shoot enough eventually you'll need it.

I was wondering how the end was held on. Thanks

Well, they sent me the wrong spring. I noticed it appeared a little longer at first glance but after installing realized it's actually shorter! The outer shell assembly and inner pin are different than the original. When assembled, the little nut on the end of the spring assembly does not sit flush with the end of the slide. It's too short. In fact I can't even rack the slide as it catches the edge of the slide not allowing rearward movement. Glad I didn't try and shoot it...would have been quite a kick without the slide movement!

What gun might that size spring be for? Maybe the 380?

I took pictures of my 2006 PM9 and the recoil springs. The outer spring has 12 1/2 coils and the Wolff replacement has 12 full coils.

Mine is the older blunt-nosed version and I believe the has been a change in the springs... coil count, for the newer models and the CM's.

With the slide removed, the nut on the front of the recoil spring is NOT flush with the front of the slide, but when replaced on the frame, the nut is sort of flush.

New springs will measure longer, but will take a set... shorten under compression. This is taken into consideration in the design of the spring. Never shorten a new spring based on longer length alone. After taking a set it will probably be too weak!

all PM and CM kahrs today wyn whether new slide model or old slide model take the same outter spirng 13 coils, Now the recoil tube assembly is certinly longer on the beveled slides over ur beautiful blunt nose PMJ version. One can now order the outter recoul springs directly from wolffs and it will fit any cm or PM 9 or 40 cal kahr..

Thanks Wynn. When the new spring was installed and the pistol completely assembled, the little nut was further "inside" the slide than your photo of the slide and spring assembly.

I did go to the range today and shot with the original spring assembly (missing the nut) and it did fine. Shot 163 rounds through it with zero failures.

The nut doesn't do much except hold the small spring in. Once in the gun it doesn't do much excerpt to hold in line when in battery.

I put the wolff springs in my gun. They were about a half inch longer than stock, but once I took them back out without shooting they had shrunk down to about a 1/4" longer than stock (used)

I looked on the Wolff site but didn't see the CM9, but did the PM9. I assume since they are structurally the same that I should get that one.
