I've seen sea gulls do that for some random reason in the late mornings, quite a sight.

That phenomenon, which could be observed on a somewhat smaller scale most summer evenings, is one of the very few things I miss from the years when we lived in southern New Jersey.

You can see this, but not on quite as grand of scale in southern Ohio during Deer season.

Very interesting. I recall a study by the some British royal society that posited a reason how they birds basically gave up individual control and the flock behaved as one mind. It was very fascinating. It mimics crowds and rioters behavior.

Don't think of your first impulse too harshly. Starlings are an invasive specie crowding out native North American birds.

Another video about European Starlings. I used to get attacked by these buggers when I lived in Los Angeles, CA. Very aggressive and fearless.

WILD bird Feed (these makes them crazy)

As a biology teacher it is this kind of mystery that you try to get the kids to see if they will down their cell phone long enough.
