For years I wanted to try out one of the little Kahr pistols and last week pulled the trigger on a CM9. I usually carry a Glock 26 (sometimes G19) but wanted something smaller, lighter and thinner.
Now when I buy a gun, I hit up the Manufacturer specific forums and do my research. I've heard about the issues with some of the Kahrs in the past, but every manufacturer has issues at one time or another, so I felt pretty good about the purchase after doing my due diligence.
After picking her up, I followed the pre-shooting break in procedures. I do this with every gun I have ever got. Which includes a complete breakdown and through cleaning of the entire gun and magazines. Not just a wipe, a detailed cleaning. You have to get all the factory gunk out of there to start with a baseline. Then I properly lube and hand cycle the gun.. A LOT!! Maybe a few hundred or more times. During this, I'm also getting a feel for the trigger, which is key. Then, I'll break it down again and clean again. This is to see where parts are mating and wearing, and cleaning off any residue from the mating. Yep, relube and reassemble.
A few other things I do after step 1 is to polish the feed ramps, as I don't trust factories and I want to rule this out if any jams. A Dremel and some JB Bore Paste and she shines. You don't need to heavy hand this, just a light touch, wipe, do again, wipe, etc, etc till you get all the ridges from the machining out.
The first time I put it back together I couldn't get the slide back on the frame without having to push the top of the barrel shroud down. This was before the hand cycling and probably just needed to be mated a bit. Second time, no problem. Again, the reason they recommend 200 breakin rounds it to mate these surfaces. I knew this going in, so I do what they require. Just pulling it out of the box and hitting the range would just be setting yourself up for issues with any new gun.
So finally hit the range last night. Only had a little time before it got dark, but put 30rds of Federal Eagle 124gr ball and 70rds of my reloads (124gr Remington ball). My reloads are a little lighter than the factory fodder and it ate everything. So I'm very happy. Will get another 100rds thought her then try some defensive ammo I plan to carry. Recoil is surprising low and it's even easy to shoot one handed. I really need to work on my trigger control after coming from my Glocks as I'm pulling left and a little low. I'll try to get her on sandbags next time to get POI established with the sights.
Anyway, I'll follow-up as I progress. All in all. I'm very impressed. May have to grab a CM45 when they come out.
Cheers,
Hawk
