I just finished a major take down and cleaning on my, formerly my grandfather's 1954 Ithaca 37. I had never stripped it down for a cleaning, but it had obviously been pretty meticulously taken care of in its past.
I don't shoot it much, but the action on that shotgun is so slick that I have to defer to Jocko to come up with the perfect analogy.
There really wasn't much crud in the thing, but I re-oiled the butt stock with a few coats of boiled linseed oil while I had it apart.
The parts in this thing had so much evident handwork, polishing, deburring and fitting, it makes me smile to imagine how it was crafted without CNC machines decades ago. Beautiful wood with great figure too.
Even just fondling such a gun is awesome.
Had to share.

Every 37 I've held and I've held a few were just slicker than possum ca ca.
There was an awful lot of hand fitting and super quality control in those things. I'd like to have one in my toy box just because ya know.
I'm glad your giving it the love it deserves and being your grandfathers makes it priceless regardless of condition.
Oh and I'm with Pointblank, pictures or it didn't happen!

My dad carried a Model 37 when we chased rabbits and pheasants back in the late 50's. Every time I see one it makes me think of him. Thanks for reviving the memory Alfonse.

I gave my grand son my Model 37 parkerized that I bought through our gun businessin 1962. It had 5 barrels with it in all tha time. finest pump I ever had. never had one issue with it, used for for skeet, doves, waterfowl, deer. In our gun business back then Ithaca ruled the pump industry, we somd literally hundreds of them back then for $99. Hated to see them dissappear. I know a company bought alot of their euipment and name but not sure if they are still around in the name of Ithaca. I guess its time has passed. there was no sh!t in Ithaca's . We sold literaqlly hundreds of the Ithaca buckbusters to. I just love the company, back then we even dealt directdwith Ithaca..

Jocko, they are still around as a different company. Now they are located in Upper Sanduskey Ohio, but I guess Upper Sanduskey Gun Company doesn't have the same ring to it.

I, too, have a 37 that once belonged to my grandfather - but it is a 16 gauge. Is there a website that can tell me the date of production?
