Those of you who ankle carry, is it only as a backup to your primary carry. Is there any time that ankle carry is your primary carry?

Previously have seldom used ankle carry as a back-up ,unless just trying something new. I just recently purchased an ankle holster for my CM9. My intent is to use it while seat-belted in the car, either as passenger or driver. Do not like not having the hand gun attached to my person. Shoulder holster and cross-draw sweeps toward driver if I am the passenger. Upon arrival I intend to transfer CM9 to my usual pocket carry.

Ankle carry is for me backup only. I have had working assignments where ankle carry was the only option but if I have a choice ankle is NEVER primary and only backup.

Mine is mostly backup but it's my always there gun. At the station where I'm not allowed to wear a belt gun, actually not allowed to have a gun at all but on the ankle don't count, right? On weekends I sometimes wear sweatpants, more comfy when your a full time sitter. I used to be able to wear them to work until new brass messed that up.

So sometimes it's primary. I do have one advantage to sitting full time, its right handy when I go into my sitting fetal curled over please don't hurt me act.

I've read a few cop reports where the ankle gun was primary for a number of reasons and they weren't good. Hopping around on one leg frantically trying to deploy the gun, not good. But they do have a place, in the car is a good one, more handy than the belt.

In my van it's not quite as handy since you sit higher and the legs are stretched out. I also found that it's not great on my riding lawn mower. Not enough room straddling the engine housing to get at it quickly.

Good point about an ankle gun when sitting, Bawanna. I frequently carry that way when I'm going to spend a great deal of time in the car, because it's difficult to get at a belt or IWB holster in that confined situation.

In a vehicle a crossdraw is one of the better bets. NM State Police and IL Sate Police used to use crossdraws for uniformed wear. The best bet in a vehicle situation Is to have a weapon mounted within easy reach in the vehicle. I have a Glock30S in a Gum Creek Outfitters holster under the steering column.

I'll stick with the ankle holster for car use. To use a cross draw holster, you have to wear a jacket or untucked shirt to cover the gun, which is not that practical in Georgia most of the year. Obviously, that's not a problem for LEO's. Also, if you had a way to secure the gun within the car, what do you do with it when you get out, providing of course, you don't forget it. Two of my three cars are convertibles and I keep the top down all year.

Very cool but I think that's illegal in Florida. Even if it were legal, I hate to think what would happen if I were pulled by a police officer.

I carry a FS USP Tactical 45 cross draw.
It's very accessible while driving.
Better than ankle carry IMHO.

You didn't mean better than your USP in a ankle holster, did you?;) Are bell bottoms back in style?

Ankle carry is tough enough to conceal with a small gun. I carried that way in the '70s. Never did work all that well.

There was a time when I spent many, many hours driving around in a patrol unit. The ankle holster for the back up (Colt's Cobra) was a lot easier to get to than my side arm. :D

I'm not to keen on ankle carry for a primary carry. If you need a back up, you are likely near to or on the ground. If that happens then you don't need to bend down to get yer gat.

Just my 2 bits worth. :D

The ankle is a great place for a BUG. There are, however, times when the dress requirements make a typical belt carry nearly impossible. In those times, ankle carry is all I've got. If you've got a true, viable solution for belt carry while wearing a tuxedo, I'm all ears.

I had to wear a tuxedo twice so far in my life. I didn't like it much. The belly band thingy ma jiggy was handy for stashing stuff but looked stupid.

The tie felt like a hang mans noose.

It just occurred to me that other than the suit I wore to my grandmas funeral and wore again at a Senior Prom in high school is the only suit I ever owned.

I got a funeral coming up next week, might have to borrow one.

So I picked up an ankle holster and walked around the house with it for a little while. Absolutely hated it. Feels like a leg weight is strapped to my ankle (because that's what it is!) and hard to access quickly. Not for me.

Which one did you get by chance. There are many cheap ones that will never be comfortable. The ones that work well aren't cheap. And some folks just never get accustomed to them, it takes some getting used too.

In one respect I'm very lucky, the leg swing when walking or running doesn't apply to me, my feet just sit on the foot rest so my ankle is like another waist, just something to hang stuff on. I've often thought I should hang something off the other one to be efficient. Pepper spray or another knife or perhaps a hand grenade if I can find one.

Don't forget front pocket carry. I front pocket carry an MK............I would think, a CM or PM would be a breeze. http://kahrtalk.com/images/icons/icon12.gif

It's a Ready Holster and it was fairly inexpensive.

I much prefer pocket carry.
