View Full Version : PM9 break-in question

manual recommends putting 200 rds through a PM9 to break it in.
Now I've noticed some folks say they rack their slides 500 times THEN fire 200 rds.
The manual makes no mention of all this racking. Is it really necessary?
Kahr also recommends replacing the recoil spring every 1000-1500 rds. So if you rack it that initial 500 tlmes, should you replace that first recoil spring after 500-1000 rds?
Should you even bother to rack 500 times before you fire it?
I think the initial 500 times racking the new slide might do nothing but contribute to wear.
I know these are pretty hardy, well made firearms. I also know these are designed to be carry guns, not range guns. So why add the additional wear?
I have a PM and a CM, I didn't do all the racking...they're flawless.
Just clean, lube, shoot and repeat...
I change out my outer spring only at 1500 rounds.. because it's a carry gun(s).

I just cleaned and shot mine too.

I have read that hand racking is not the same as shooting live rounds. The hand racking just helps the RSA take somewhat of a set.

No, it's not the same. Shooting is more expensive. Louder too!
What is "RSA?" Acronyms can be a pain to dumb guys like me.
And, to an extent, you are, of course, correct. There is a lot more force when blowback racks a slide than when a slide is racked by hand.
But even hand racking generates some wear. It is, after all, a mechanical proposition. And 500 slide racks? No thanks.
I have to figure Kahr knows how to break-in there handguns. They don't tell people to do this. They probably would like the idea though. It would help them sell more of those (overpriced] springs. ;]
When my new PM9 arrives I'll clean it, lube it and put 150rds of round nose through it and then 50rds of various hollow points through it. If it's running right, I will consider it broken in and ready to carry.

Have you wife or girlfriend rack the slide for you. It won't do the gun any good, but it's an excellent breast enhancement exercise. The recommendation to rack the slide originally came from an old sheep herder who had nothing better to do in his spare time. Then one day a sheep backed into him and the rest is history. :)

Why do you think causing completely unnecessary wear on a new firearm is a "good idea?"
It's pure foolishness. Nothing more.

Aw, did I rubb you the wrong way?
And I come off as an ass-hat?
How about you come across as a simpleton? Racking a slide 500 times causes unneccesary wear. This is simply undeniable.
By the way, I love laughing at little parrots like you who use "ass-hat" as an insult. It sounds so cool. I bet you were drooling at the thought of referring to me as an ass-hat.
Now "simpleton" is a fine, descriptive word. Even idiots can figure out its meaning. "Dolt" and "cretin"are not as easily recognized. That's why I didn't use them for you.
Sincerely,
Ass-hat

My dear insipid clown,
You should not have started with the juvenile name calling... but since you did, I will join you.
Anyway, Kel-Tecs are inexpensive firearms. They often need to be fluffed and buffed.
But I've NEVER heard of any type of fluff and buff that includes racking the slide 500 times. A little polishing here and there, sure. But cycling the slide 500 times as part of a fluff and buff? No way.
You just make this stuff up as you go along, right?
Don't you realize how silly you sound?
Kahrs, on the other hand, should not require owners to do gunsmithing on them. You pay a premium to get a premium gun. If I want a "project gun," I'll buy a Kel-Tec.

If your opinion is simply racking a slide 500 times causes unnecessary wear, why did you even bother to post the question...twice....troll!

Back 'er down boys. This is a friendly place. Back to the topic. You aren't going to wear out your pistol if you just take care of it. 500 hand racks IS a good idea if you are so inclined. Most don't bother.
P.S. I dry fire practice and hand rack 1000's of times. It's part of my training. Is training unnecessary wear? Maybe we should buy a gun and never shoot it...just carry it around with zero wear so it will be ready when we need it.

You're missing the point. Train how you like. Rack yours day and night. All I'm saying is racking causes wear. Some parts are rubbing against each other. Springs are expanding and contracting.
Any high school physics student will tell you racking eventually causes wear unless you live on a planet that has no gravity. And if that's the case be very, very careful. Your rounds will fly forever.
Do you think racking your Kahrs THOUSANDS of times has no effect on the recoil spring? How often do you change yours? Do you calculate these thousands of hand racks into the formula of when to put in a new recoil spring?

Own an MK9.............no fluff, no buff.............clean, oil, shoot, repeat. With an occasional fondle.

Ugh I hope this thread doesn't get locked I have a CM9 on the way and I wanted to ask few questions.
I've read a few places on the forum where people have recommended using 9mm NATO for the first 200 rounds.
I do plan on following Jocko's prep recommendations, IIRC he recommends using ball ammo but he didn't specify NATO.
Do people have opinions on this?

Some like NATO because it's hotter and would be less likely to hang up with the stiffer(new)spring.
I've used standard 115 and 124 grain FMJ ammo without any issues.

I'm sure people know this but
The SAAMI pressure limit for the 9×19mm Parabellum is 35,001 psi
The SAAMI pressure limit for the 9×19 mm Parabellum +P is 38,500 psi
The service pressure Pmax of the 9 mm NATO is rated at is 36,500 psi
So the NATO ammo is just a little hotter than standard pressure ammo but not quite +P which the CM9 / PM9 is rated for.
Besides anecdotal stories on the Internet and possibly cheap / low quality guns, I've never seen a 9mm pistol that supposedly would hold up under regular 9mm but would blow up using NATO spec ammo. And I would contend that any gun that would suffer breakage firing NATO would suffer the same breakage firing standard pressure 9mm.
I don't have a lot of NATO ammo though so I'm debating if I should pick up 200 rounds.

Mickey, Jocko has put in excess of 32,000 rounds of 9mm through is PMJ9 with no appreciable signs of wear. I don't think that hand racking the slide is going to hurt a damn thing. As long as you gun is properly cleaned and lubed it will out live you. Replacing a recoil spring periodically is a normal part of gun maintenance. Now, quit being an asshat. :)

Rubb, a fluff and buff is polishing the feed ramp and trigger parts of a Keltec P3AT. It has nothing to do with breaking in a Kahr pistol. Now I want you a Mickey to kiss and make up. Don't make me take off my belt. :)

rubby,
I told you earlier that the fluff and buff thing involved the inexpensive Kel-Tecs and polishing them up and had nothing at all to do with racking a Kahr slide 500 times.
But did you listen? NOOOOOOOOO!
Thanks for setting him straight, muggsy. But I ain't gonna smooch him.
I'm just gonna pull my ass-hat over my ears and ride quietly off into the sunset rather than wait for the apology rubby baby owes me so badly.

Hey MF
I'm torn between enjoying watching you get your panties in a twist over your petty pride, "oh my racking is gunna wear out my springs or something. Just admit it Rubb, something is going to get uh...uh worn out or uh something", says MF in a whinny girly voice.
And, giving you some mature counsel so you can save your reputation (or what's left of it) on this forum (right now your looking like a girly boy).
I'll give you some advice. Try not to be an ass-hat. Calm down and mellow out. Since I'm sure you live in Colorado that should be really easy for you to do.
Your new mentor,

No thanks, pal. Go mentor a 10-year-old boy. From the way you project all this gay/girly business I think that's what you really want.
And as for my reputation here, do you really think I give a bowel movement what 99% of you think? If you do, you really are deluded.

We play nice here and we play respectful and to many of us this forum is our own little oasis that we enjoy and look forward to enjoying even at the expense of not having a life.
Keep that in mind.
This ones done, sorry I wasn't here about 3 pages ago to shut it down.
