I went and shot my new cm40 todaym ran flawlessly but the recoil was very high compared to my Springfield xd sub compact I carry now. Not terrible but will take some getting used to.
My question. Is how does the 9mm version compare to the 40? We were thinking about picking up a 9mm for the wife because she loves the feel of the gun. But if the recoil is anywhere near the 40 I know she wont practice with it which makes it a useless gun IMO.

I have both. The CM9 has much less recoil, but still requires a firm grip and stiff wrist to prevent FTF issues. Second, the accuracy of the CM40 is much better than the CM9 with standard FMJ target ammo. I bought some WWB in both calibers last weekend to be able to do a fair test. Based on how the CM9 shoots Federal Champion 115gr RN's I expect the CM40 to be far more accurate. This may be my two examples, so your experience may be different.
All that said, I like the CM9 a lot. I like the CM40 more.
I'm in the same situation. I have a CM40, which my wife is NOT comfortable shooting. She needs something with a lot less recoil. We're considering the CM9 or new CW380.
The 380 is about 5 ounces lighter than the CM9, so with the reduced weight, I'm not sure if it will actually have less recoil than the 9.
The CM9 may ultimately be the better choice. (especially when you consider ammo cost)
Anyone out there compare the CM9 with the CW380 from a shooting comfort standpoint?

I had them both but passed them on to different homes. I like them both. The 380 is markedly smaller and easier to pack in a front pocket. However, it fit my hand nicely and the recoil was very manageable. The cm9 is longer and wider but has a fairly short grip. It felt snappier to me because of the short grip length and the way the gun would pivot in my hand under recoil. Ultimately, it was not as comfortable for me to shoot.
The cm9 was more reliable than the 380, which was more ammo sensitive. I developed a hot ball handload that it liked but I never found a SD ammo that ran 100% all the time.
I kept a sig 938 as my small 9 as I like the SA system and after quite a bit of tuning and trigger work it runs 100% with everything I feed it. It carries ok in a pocket.
For a 380 I have a micro desert eagle on the way.
For now my only kahr is a cw45. It is very comfortable and reliable and is presently going head to head with an xds 45.

The CM40 is a tiger, the CM9 a puma, but the P380 is a ***** cat.

The small 40 for the average women and some men is more than they will shoot enough to be good with it.
See what can be rented or borrowed from a local and let HER decide. The slightly larger cw series is more controllable, give a full grip for smaller hands and easier to shoot , and control and still slightly smaller and lighter than a shield. The cm pm are not a great choice for many ladies or some men.

comparison in a 40 cal vs 9mm. One is pleaset and one will punish you. For sure don't biy ur wife a 40- cal in any kahr. A 9mm like muggsy said is really pleaseant . Maybe the cw9 would be a better gun for her also, it is atad bigger, more grip to get her hands around, and if allelse fails for her. have it magna ported and then she will really enjoy it alot more to. Normally over the cunter fmj ammo that is bargain priced is not as hot as defense stuff to, so for rang euse, stay with the lower pirced lower powered ammo but for sure let her shoot +P9mm ammo for defense s she knows. Most women can handle a 9mm, alot of men can't handle a 40 cal, especially in a ultra light sub compact gun like a cm40 kahr. They don't get any lighter and smaller than that and a 40 cal is just a hand cannon round. NOtice most all 40 call ammo is never +P rated. Its a hot round PERIOD. ZIf u buy her the cm9, it is the same size kand wight basically so she should love the feel the same. STAY AWAY FROM THE 40 for a woman..

If you are buying a gun for the wife, the best advice anyone can give you is to let your wife pick it out. Have her work the slide, feel it in her hands and best yet...shoot it first. We spent months finding something my wife liked. She could not work the slide on most 9's. I didn't even show her the 40's (as much as I like them....my cal). But I agree with the input of these guys steering you away from a 40 for the wife. Mine picked out the S&W Bodyguard 380. She can work the slide just fine and the recoil was nothing to her. She is a FL State Champion Black Powder shooter (3 yrs in a row). She can shoot. She shoots that little 380 just fine. I'd like to see her shoot it and carry it more, but she is comfortable with it and it fits her just fine. Let your wife decide what she wants and likes. Too many guys think they need to pick a gun out for their wife. It is a huge mistake. IMO.

Good advice.
Many of us have learned this lesson at the "school of hard knocks". The result is a collection of guns we thought would be right for our wives. We were wrong. Again.

^^^ What a Gary said! Seriously, I've tried both & have owned several of the 9mms for a reason. Both the 9 & 40 Kahrs in any model are snappy, but I don't feel I can comfortably fire ACCURATE follow up shots with the 40s.
I've tried all the sub compact 9 & 40 guns except for the Pico, & haven't found anything that beats my PM9 for size, reliability, comfort.
