I was wondering if any of you have one or has considered a Ruger Commander SR1911. I bought one and have been very happy with it, it is a great shooter and I dolled it up with a set of Moose antler grips that I made. They may be a little thick for most folks but they fit my oversized mitts well.

I don't have the commander but I have the full size and I love it very much. Great shooter.

Hows moose antler to work with ,a little brittle. Smell horrible when you file and grind?

I worked a bit of ivory for a pal down in Texas, sure looks nice but hard to play with.

I got a idea in my head where I'll be whittling some stag if I can find what I'm looking for. Never worked it before.

I have used Elk horn for some single action grips but the Moose antler is a lot more dense and solid, I don't even bother with Elk any more because I get a lot more useable material from one Moose antler palm.
I have not found it to be brittle but is does stink like getting your teeth drilled on when you grind it. But it polishes up very well if you use white polishing compound.
I buy my antlers from a Trading post in Flagstaff Arizona. The majority of what they have for sale is from drops collected and shipped in, sometimes they have a full skull set but they are really expensive.
I have been admiring some of your grips and I have wondered how they would be to checker or if you have ever tried on stag or bone.

I've never tried checkering elk or moose.

I've actually checkered a few water buffalo horn handles and they checker very well, dense and hard.

I'll have to look for a moose on the way home and see if I can't get a sample, probably not, now that I ponder it.

Good looking Ruger!
I just fondled one the other day when I was 1911 shopping. I went a different way, but it seemed like a real nice little pistol.

Nice looking grips indeed.
I've had my SR1911CMD about six months now, and really enjoy it. Great fun at the range and a good accurate shooter.

Looks like you did a fine job on those grips Southerngunner. Like others I've only shot the 5 inch but really liked it. I have to think the Commander is a great gun too. Funny. The only thing I don't like about the Ruger is the black slide stop lever and thumb safety on the stainless. I bought a Sig that's the exact opposite: silver slide stop and thumb safety on an all black gun. I swapped them out for black ones from Wilson Combat.

Enjoy!

Love my Ruger 1911CMD. It is my main carry gun. I bobtailed mine and love it.http://i1326.photobucket.com/albums/u647/doublebarrel3/4bd1dfa0-3ad3-4f5a-b1e5-b5438592f79b_zps69cd0cf2.jpg (http://s1326.photobucket.com/user/doublebarrel3/media/4bd1dfa0-3ad3-4f5a-b1e5-b5438592f79b_zps69cd0cf2.jpg.html)

I'd wager it is, only place I know. I bobtailed my Para LDA with one. I do love a bobtail.

A more recent photo. Yes it is an Ed Brown MSH. I also bobtailed and added front cocking serrations on a full size Ruger 1911 for my son. Also took logo off the slides and polished the sides of slide.

I like that slick side. I may have to play bald faced copy cat, build up my courage and try that on mine. I've thought about bobtailing it before, still not sure if I will or not.

That Rascal does look good, But I have my C-Bob for a bobtail. However I may radius the bottom of the mainspring area.

I have to say............I'm not a 1911 guy, but that slide without the logo, looks amazing. Some fine work.

Nice pistols gentshttp://www.freesmileys.org/smileys/smiley-fc/gun.gif (http://www.freesmileys.org/smileys.php)

Southergunner,
I believe I've seen some of your other handiwork (all well done) on different Ruger forums. If that is your work, I especially like that sort of a "belt slide" style holster you've made for short barrel Ruger single actions and the front sight you fabricated for you Service Six.
Regards,
Greg

Love my CMD. It had a slight catch in the trigger in the beginning, so I had a trigger job done. I had my gunsmith change the trigger for a Wilson Combat, changed the angle to 19 degrees on the sear and polished/stoned the engagement on the sear and hammer.
Now she is unbelievable, just like breaking a glass rod and a very nice shooter. It has been my main every day carry for a while. Back up is a SIG P938 9mm.
Over the years I have found that Ruger's are built hell for stout and present a good value for the money. Their customer service is excellent as well.

Oh I forgot to mention I also include my PM9 in the rotation for back up or when I can't dress around the 1911.

Have yet to even see a Cmdr locally, for that matter have only seen blued full size, no stainless versions.

Do like the idea of bobbing an lda (or any 1911 for that matter) though

I've seen a few around these parts. I've held a couple and of course was sorely tempted.
I have the full size and I'm completely happy with it. I've thought about bobbing it like I did my LDA but so far I'm in a leave it as is mode.

It also had a slight catch in the trigger but it worked itself out and is quite nice now. I see no need to mess with it. It works fine for me.
