Hi,
Picked up a brand new PM9 today and brought it home to do the preparatory clean/lube before starting the break-in tomorrow.
Please have a look at the pic below. Note the flaw right at the muzzle end of the slide.
What do you suppose caused that?
The area is smooth to the touch and the discoloration or perhaps "noncoloration" is the word for it, may be just cosmetic and have no effect on how the gun works.
But I gotta tell ya, I'm disappointed. It's ugly and is glaringly obvious. It just jumps out at you.
I'm thinking of calling Kahr in the morning to arrange to send it back for another one that looks the way it is supposed to look.
Maybe I'm picking nits, but these pistols ain't cheap and that spot shouldn't be there. It spoils the whole pistol for me and I'll tell you why.
Every time I go to clean it, which will be every time after I shoot it, I'll see that spot and say, "Damn, that sure is ugly. I should have just sent it back."
And should I ever decide to sell it a potential buyer might see it and say, "I don't know what that is, but no thanks. I don't like the looks of that."
Have any of you ever seen anything like this before? What do you suppose caused it?
Thanks,
Finn

Ya, just contact kahr with that pic and send in for a replacement slide. And if course it won't affect performance one bit as it appears simply cosmetic.

Thanks, I guess that's what I'll do. I hope they don't give me a hard time about it. And I think it's legal for me to mail them just the slide.

I spoke with Ian at Kahr and he is sending me a return shipping label. I'll send the slide off today.
We'll see what happens and I'll keep you folks informed.

I hope you have better luck than I have. They took delivery of my brand new P45 five weeks ago yesterday and still no word.

Definitely after 5 weeks I'd request a status report to make sure it didn't fall through the cracks. It could be they are needing a part they are out of to fix it.
I had that happen on a K40, needed a new slide and they didn't have any black ones, I really wanted stainless anyhow. I told them that and I received it the very next day with a shiny new stainless slide.
Don't hurt to check.

that mark is from heat damage.

What do you think was the source of the heat, Jerry?

I am surpirsed theyt did not ask for the entire gun to fit the slide and barrel etc.
If that slide had the dlc finsih, it is applied at a heat temperature and my thoughts are that some substance was in that area and the finish just did not take.

Is it customary for Kahr to ask for the entire pistol when there is a problem with just the slide? Are the parts not interchangeable?
If they are not, should I send them the remaider of the pistol? I have a rotten temper and I'm already starting to get pissed off.
I do have to wonder if the quality control people were out to lunch. That spot is huge, no way it could be missed IF someone gave that slide even the most cursory of inspections.
I hope Kahr has a record of who was responsible for the (ahem) inspection. He or she needs to be retrained or canned.

If kahrs are production guns & not EB's or WC or Nighthawk they might be parts assembled together & shipped. They might beadblast the slide (rework in kahr terms) & return it.

I think before I send it back I would contact kahr and ask them. normally we have seen where they want thge entire gun to test it out. Parts are interchangeable but to some extent maybe the slide/barrel assembly needs to be a matched pair. Error on the side of caution and ask them. They might just bead blast that slide again and send it back. I was under the impression it was the dlc finish, which is an outside vendor thing, not an inhouse..

Thanks, jocko. Good advice. I'll call them Monday and ask if they may want any other of the parts, and much as I hate to, I'll tell whomever I speak to that I'll pay the freight if they insist.
I'd still like to know how someone missed that large blemish, or if someone did see it and just didn't give a crap. Either way, it does not speak well of Kahr.

naw don't tell tem u will pay to ship it, if they want it they will pay to have it. dont volunteer, that is costly for us to send guns back. but not for them..
My thought are the jack leg that was supposed to look these slides over must have felt that being it was on the inside of the slide it was then OK. Hell u never know. It only takes one person to pass on a part and then it goes into the product.
How do u figre the fiasco tha tthe Fuirestone 500 tires had 30+ years ago. Or todays GM ignition issues..

Jocko called it!
Update - Heard from Kahr today and they told me that the blemish was cosmetic and would not effect function and I could have it back OR send them the remainder of the pistol and they would fit a new slide to it.
For the reasons mentioned above, the frame et al will be shipped back today.
Maybe I'll get an even better than normal PM9 back as it is receiving individual attention from someone there.

That's good news mickeyfinn, I don't blame you for being upset about that blemish even if it wouldn't have hurt the guns performance it would have bothered me too every time I saw it....Good to hear hat Kahr is going to do you right and pay for shipping as well as make the gun right....Good luck and let us know how it looks when she gets back....

I shipped the remainder of the firearm off today. I shipped the slide to Kahr 12 days ago.
I got a call from them last Friday, 5/9, telling me to send the frame back too. They told me they would email me a shipping label that day. But they never did, I had to call them today to remind them to email me the label.
Had I gotten the label Friday, when they said I would, the pistol would have gotten there today. As it stands now, we're looking at Wednesday. More wasted time.
Not happy with Kahr these days. This process of trying to get them to make the new, unfired pistol right has been a model of inefficiency.
I described the original problem to them in an email and verbally in a phone call. They also had pictures.
I think they should have asked me then and there to ship the WHOLE pistol to them. So if they get the frame in 2-3 days, the process thus far will have taken more than two weeks and I have no idea how much longer it will take.
I really hope they'll get going on this. I HAD a guy waiting to buy my CM9, my current carry pistol. The new PM9 was to be it's replacement. The potential buyer grew impatient and is long gone.
So now I have to find someone else to buy the CM9 after I get the PM9 back and break it in correctly.
If the new PM9 were right when I got it, it would be broken in by now and I'd be carrying it. And the CM9 would have been sold already.
Right now I'm 0-2 and starting to do a slow simmer. I hope I don't reach a boil before this is over.
And nary a word from Kahr saying we're sorry this happened or anything of the sort. They just seem kind of blase' about the whole thing.
This is what it feels like. "Yeah, yeah, we screwed up. We have to take care of this per our warranty so shut up, do what we tell you to do and sooner or later you'll get what you paid for."
Not good.
