Interesting read.

Why isn't there more "legal" minority gun owners? Maybe it is because to legally purchase a firearm you have to pass a background check and have a clean record free of any felonies and be of legal age to purchase one. There are a lot more minorities that own guns than will ever be declared. They can be seen every night on your local 10:00 oclock news. Sad, but true.

First off, not every person who answers surveys answers the question(s) honestly, so I'm sure that while there are likely fewer minority owners who legally own firearms, the numbers are greater then the survey indicated. Also remember that surveys are dependent on where they're conducted and by whom...this one was conducted by the University Of Chicago...and until just recently you'd be hard pressed to legally own a gun there no matter ethnicity.

Another factor related to the lower ownership is probably based on economics. As for fewer minorities being NRA members, that too is no surprise given the perception of the general public as to who the "typical" NRA member is...by that same token I'd be willing to bet there are fewer minorities (over all) in the boy scouts and girl scouts as well.

The article is political pulp fiction.

'Minorities are less likely to own firearms" - This is a false conclusion. The only true answer, by their own assertion is that minorities are less likely to answer yes on a survey that asks if they own firearms. No other answer is valid.

"Part of the stigma around guns among African-Americans can be traced to high rates of gun violence, particularly affecting young blacks and those who live in poor, urban communities." - This is the author pulling that factoid right out of his ass. He goes on to try to "prove" his assertion by saying the NAACP is against violence, and how there have been hi profile violent crimes and (trump card) mentions Travon Martin. None of that proves a damn thing. His statement is that "stigma can be traced to high crime rates", and nothing supports that.

The NYT is know for this new ilk. Nothing new to see here.

Yes, I do believe you are correct. The BSA and the GSA are have also developed initiatives, like the NRA, to increase the number of minorities in their membership. That is a good thing.

Are you saying that a majority of minority members would lies about such a thing? I appalled. :) I don't own a gun. Never have and never will. (Where is the emoticon for crossed fingers when you need one.)

There is about 10% minority at my Gun Range, most former Military. All can join me in the FoxHole, as I know they will stand and fight vs the Iraqi Army and ARVN!

It's a good thing IF those initiatives work.

I've flipped the safety cover and ready to send this thread to the scrap bin.

Anybody have a good reason not to? Ok even a semi good reason not to.

I just don't see it going anyplace good.

I have only been on this forum for a two months. This will be the second time a thread has been closed during my membership. In both cases, the cause is apparently due to confronting racist postings in this forum. Is this a taboo topic?

One area we try hard to avoid is racism or discussions that lead to racism.

Actually I try to cut (apparently didn't like the japanese soldier slang word (here we go with the racism again) things off at the bud whenever they seem to be going down the path to ugly.

No reason to dwell on ugly since usually the ugly discussions around here don't accomplish much anyhow, so why dwell on it.

If there's only been two closed during your time it must be a very slow period. I'll never hit by quota at this rate.

The simple logic in this is that it's a joke! Some who want to promote racism would say it's a racist joke. I say it's a funny joke and move on.
Racism is a much too broad brush in my feeble opinion.

I respectfully disagree with your logic. The statistics quoted in the "joke" are not true and denigrates the black citizens of this country. "Jokes" like that will set a person on a course to unemployment if told in most American corporations. I wish racism did not exist but I will not turn a blind eye when I see it. That "joke" IS racist.

Folks, I've scrubbed this thread (quoted joke and one other post with a term some folks might find objectionable/derogatory/racist). I've also done the same for the "joke" in the thread from whence it was quoted.

I'd remind members if you feel something objectionable has been posted, please use the http://kahrtalk.com/images/tigra/buttons/report.gif button to report it.

Greg

The biggest racists are folks that keep bringing it up. The Very Wrong Revvum Thackson, Al Sharptounge, LooUs Farcrackan are the three biggest. Everytime I hear of somebody saying racism is only possible by the majority against a minority I know I am dealing with an ignorant fool. It works in all directions. Remember when you point the bony finger of racism at others you have three fingers of your own pointing back at you. I know many minorities that own and shoot firearms. In CCW classes minorities are very well represented numerically.

A joke has to have an element of truth in it to be funny. There have been jokes made about every race, color, ethnicity and creed. Get over yourself, David. Your not going to fix all that's wrong in the world.
