The Perils of Open Carry...
Another point of view... most points I've mentioned myself.
I'm not really trying to start another discussion... just post a link.

Totally agree.......................in my state, it's been legal to open carry for ever........except for small towns, where they know the local LE, not many choose to open carry. We don't feel like being face planted on the concrete. A damn shame really............it's much more comfortable to open carry.

Agree with all points. Proper weapon retention is a subject 99.99999% of concealed and open carriers are IGNORANT of and need proper training. Most LEO's receive initial retention training and some like my dept. get ongoing training. Here in OK OC was recently passed to much hoopla and fanfare. I have only seen 2 folks OC since then.

Open carry is a bad idea even in places where it is legal, yet there are those people that demand the right to do it, and then open carry because it is their "right" to do it. These people just make it harder for the rest of us. It has been legal in my state for a hundred years, but it draws too much attention and causes people to look at you as if you were the criminal. It's not worth the trouble.

Yup, it was somewhat of a big deal when it happened but I have not seen any OC. But then, I don't have to go to a job that forces me out in public and I much rather stay on the property and close the gate to keep the riff-raff out.

pros:
easy to dress around.
more comfortable.
allows for the inadvertent "flash" of an open jacket or printing for the concealed carrier.
cons:
screams "shoot me first".
most have little or no gun take-away defense training.
most use holsters (and belts) poorly or not designed to help with gun take-away defense.
draws unwanted attention (unless attention whoring is fashionable).
commonly done by clowns who taint the image of descent folks.
no matter your feelings on the issue, these (above) are truths.

I wonder why he didn't mention the times it has proven a deterrent to criminal endeavour?
A person who thinks he is concealed but who simply has a thin shirt hanging over his handgun can have it taken just as easily and yet I see no mention of that.
I think some people give most criminals far to much credit in the brain department.

I open carry quite often...
when I'm out in the woods. In town, never.

The only time I have 'open carried' is in snake country when I'm on a hike.
I consider it a self defense advantage when "others" don't know I'm armed.

I don't open carry for reasons of my own, but I have no objection to anyone else who is legally carrying a gun openly.

The article has good points. I conceal when I am out and about. But when I am around the house or out in the woods, it could be open. I just feel there is a time and place for everything, regardless, yet consistent with the laws.

I wouldn't tell anyone not to do what they are legally allowed to do under the second amendment. I believe that it's their individual decision to make. I don't think that it does the cause any good for gun owners be divided on the issue. If a conservative is a vegetarian he doesn't eat meat. If a liberal is a vegetarian he doesn't want anyone to eat meat. I'm a conservative. I lawfully carry a gun. I believe that it's the individuals right to chose whether to carry or not and how they carry it if they do chose to carry. I would never support a law to ban open carry.
I truly appreciate the open carry individual who struts his stuff for all to see. He commands the attention of the bad guy(s) long enough for me to take the appropriate self defense action needed to insure my safety and that of my loved ones.

Naw, I couldn't do that. I'm a sheepdog.

Funny how a gun culture person views open carry vs a non gun person...OC is and has been legal in Georgia forever but I hardly ever see anyone doing it but the other day I was behind a guy at the convenience store and noticed he was OC a medium size pistol in an old worn flap holster and the pistol had the old style mag release on the mag floor like an old Walther PPK...
It had my curiosity up and I thought about asking him what kind of pistol it was but let it go....Now another person seeing an OC pistol on a civilian might start screaming "He's got a GUN" and cause a panic...Different strokes for different folks I guess...
I really wish OC wasn't such a hot topic and everyone did it like the old days and nobody would think any more about a fellow wearing a gun than they would him wearing a hat or cowboy boots but those days are sadly over and even though it's a real pain sometimes to CCW it's the smart way to go...

What do you do when you have a cc permit and you see a person OC-ing his gun?
I think even a permit holder looks at the OC guy and wonders in his thoughts, is this guy legal or is he going to start shooting people.
So it does effect everyone to some degree, even legal CC holders.
People afraid of guns are terrified when they see the OC guy.
So why cause all the anguish just because "you can"?

Some people cross the street when they see a black man approaching. Should black people be banned because they cause such anguish. On second thought, maybe that isn't such a bad idea. Some of you guys amaze me with your comments. You sound just like the liberals who said that if we allowed concealed carry that there would be rivers of blood in our streets. Unbelievable.

I have no problem with anyone who legally carries openly. As far as I'm concerned it's their choice and this is still a free country. Being a freedom loving American I'm probably in the minority. I usually am.

I'd just leave em be for a few more minutes, they both look like their ready to have heart attacks.

At one time Ohio law prohibited carry a handgun during the deer gun season. Now we're allowed to hunt deer with pistols using handguns that use straight walled rimmed cartridges of cal. .357 mag or larger. Most of the handgun hunters carry them openly in shoulder rigs. I haven't heard of a single incident where openly carrying these guns has caused a panic in Hocking County, where men are still men and the women are glad of it. Hell, I've even seen some women carrying openly in Hocking Count!. It's all a matter of perspective. If you don't exercise a right it will atrophy. :)

While I don't mind being around someone who is open carrying, I do keep a third eye on him until I finish my business and move on which brings up the subject of women open carrying. While strolling around Tombstone, AZ as a tourist, a mud splattered jeep pulls up and a tall, young, shapely woman in jeans and tee wearing a cowboy hat gets out. She was openly packing a 1911 and pulls out a shooting bag from the jeep. I don't know how that would affect you, but I think my tongue was hanging out.

Wild Bill reports on Moms Demanding Action calling 911 when they see someone open carrying and saying there is a robbery in progress, or some man has a gun and is causing trouble. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HnDsdCK48Ow
They are hoping the police will come and gun down the person open carrying.
