View Full Version : How To Carry Spare Mag

I just finished reading the long thread that was about, "Do you carry a spare Mag".
My question is, how do you carry one so you can retrieve it quickly? It seems that fishing around in a pocket for a small Kahr mag would not work well. Also, if it in a pocket in in a leather pouch how do you extract it from the pouch with one hand?

I you ever need to use a spare magazine, you will probably need it in a hurry and it will need to be readily available on the weak side.
I use a woven nylon "pocket knife" case in the horizontal position on my belt with the velcro flap to the rear, the top of the magazine forward and the nose of the cartridges down so the magazine is correctly oriented for quick insertion in the pistol.
Look at http://www.rainbowofcalifornia.com/cases-c-3-l-en.html.
The 87M Medium Knifecase fits Kahr 9mm 6-round magazines or 380 7-round magazines and the 87SA Swiss Army Knifecase fits Kahr 9mm 7-round magazines.
I found the Rainbow of California cases at REI in Atlanta.
It does not look like a magazine carrier, it is easily accessible while sitting / standing / in a car / etc. and it is fast. Not saying this is the only or best solution, but it works for me.

This one's got little tabs that seem to hold it in my pocket when I draw a mag. It works best in a rear pocket for me. It doesn't matter how it stays in the pocket as long as it does. Try some out if possible.

b4uqzme, I like the double pouch. Where did you buy it?

I got it here off a member and I don't know who made it. But they are around. I hate (again) to speak for him but you might want to look into a current member: BEARDOG (who makes quality, leather mag pouches).
I do like the double pouch: 6+1+7+7=21 rounds in a VERY concealable set up...nobody ever had too much ammo. :)

b4uqzme, I made your double pocket carry mag holder :). I am glad to hear you like it, and it is working well for you.

Hi slickhs,
The single pocket mag holder that you just ordered from me the other day should be delivered to you soon. I will go over how to use it.
When you get it you will see that I designed it with a hook shape on the rear edge. With a little practice you will be able to draw your mag out of it by catching the hook on the rear corner of the pocket.
I also make them very closely molded/fitted this is to keep the top round from moving and popping out of the mag (a well known issue with Kahr 9mm mags carried bare in the pocket)
The straight edge on the bottom helps keep it upright. The curved top gives fingers room to grab it.
It has a small footprint by design as well so that you can carry it and something else in the same pocket (phone, wallet, etc). I carry mine in my off hand(left) front pocket, bullets forward, beside my money clip. Then my CM9 goes in my right front pocket by itself.
If you have any other questions just ask here or PM me.
Pic of my single holders.

I suspected as much and thank you. It's a great piece of leather and a work of art. Just know that you make a difference. I've been carrying the MK9 much more now that I can discretely carry 21 rounds.

Normally, I vastly prefer leather. However I had a couple of dozen round - not a mag - resting in a high-quality leather pouch for, I hate to say it, several years. The rounds came out covered with a green slime, to varying degrees. Of course, they shouldn't have stayed in there undisturbed that long, but they were just practice rounds. I think I'll go with Cordura for the extra mag for the extra breathing...

Experience in combat (I realize concealed carry is not necessarily combat) says I need badly to carry spare Mags for my MK9.
I'm in the hunt for something.

I carry a single K920G OWB in one of these, I don't like having a firearm AND a carrier IWB.

It also holds my torch. Any printing looks like a phone/pda. I removed the paddle and am wearing it belt slide.

I have a Blackhawk hard plastic clip on carrier for a one single stack mag, that works great for .40 or .45 mags. It says it's for 9mm or .40, but I probably compressed the spring carrying .45 mags in it, so it doesn't retain 9mm very well anymore. A neighbor gave it to me, since he didn't have any pistols that took a single stack mag. 9mm still fit, but fall out when you turn the mag holder upside down. I seldom carry more than one spare mag, so it works well for me.

Thanks for the concern Col.B...I think I'll make it LOL...I have been having carpal tunnel like symptoms??? Or maybe a pinched nerve in my neck or arm??? It's in my left hand and doesn't seem to want to go away. Numbness in index and middle fingers, feels like they are asleep. and also pain in my thumb when I use it. Not sure what it is??? I've been trying to not use it too much and wearing a wrist brace at night the past week. Hoping some rest will fix it before I got to go to a Dr. I don't do/like going Dr's much....
So like I told slickhs, doing any new leather work is going to have to wait till my hand heals up a bit, hand stitching leather is kinda rough on your hands even when they feel normal.

Beardog, I just received my mag holder. Like so many before me have said, "You truly are a leather artist". Thanks so much for the fast shipping and excellent work.
I mis-typed when I first wrote this and it said hag holder instead of mag holder. I am sure glad i caught it. LOL

Great! Thank you very much for the kind words.
Just practice drawing with it a bit and I think you will find it very easy to draw your mag, and not your holder. I find I can draw mine faster and easier from my front pocket then I can draw from other types of mag holders.

Thanks jeepster09!... Sorry no website. You can just PM me with what your looking for and I will send pics and info.
Another testimonial for Beardog's pouches. I've got a few of them, and just ordered another for my newly acquired CW380. This photo is my PM9 with a Beardog double cradling two spare 7 round mags.

Thanks mser!
Your.380 single pocket holder should be down there to you by tomorrow I would think.
I just carry in my pocket. It's just a 6 round magazine for a CM9....light weight and usually the only thing in my weak hand pocket.
