View Full Version : E9 trivia?

A friend at work and were talking guns yesterday. He had assisted an aunt with the disposal of her late husband's small collection of firearms last year. One of the pistols was a Kahr E9, he describe it as a "parkerized carbon steel E9". I pointed out that the E9 had a stainless frame, but he said no, it was magnetic steel. The last E9 I found for sale (pawnshop) was blackened, rough and marked "stainless" on the frame. The guy behind the counter kept referring to it as a K9 and wanted retail K9 money for it, so he kept it...
My question (Kahr trivia I guess) is this, did Kahr ever build and sell an "all" carbon steel E9, or where all of them some combo of carbon/stainless? If they did build an all carbon steel gun, what kind of SN# range might they be. Might be a future project gun for me if I could find one priced right.
Thanks in advance. Peace

There is no firm or fast rule on the E9. The E9 was made with both carbon steel and stainless parts. They also came with the old "slab" side frame or the newer profile stainless frame. They were black, stainless or a combination. None to my knowedge were parkerized. They came with hard plastic or soft polymer grips. All had a pinned front sight and E9 stamped into the slide.

I'm pretty certain but can't confirm this but I believe some were Birdsong finished. Most I heard of were in fact carbon steel. And I concur they had both the slab side and the newer style frame. Maybe the newer style frame is when they went blackened stainless?

Some more info but not on carbon versus SS.

Thanks guys, for the replies.
The "parkerized finish" is the story tellers description and I assumed that to be blackened stainless. He then said that they stuck a rare earth magnet (watch battery size, for posting notes on his fridge) to both the frame and the slide. That was the part that got me posting the question up here. Did not even think to ask about how the slide was machined.
Don't really need another project gun right now. I have three in some stage of work or gathering parts up already. Add to those, a pile of assorted AR15 lowers, parts for same along the NYPD K9 that was suppose to be a project gun but lives it days now riding along at my hip everywhere and you'll see, I don't need another project gun.
That said, holler if you see one... Can't get in any more trouble with the wife at this point.

Q. Is all Stainless steel non-magnetic?

So I picked it up today and immediately took most of it apart. I cleaned out the slide, then Teflon'd the small parts. I scrubbed off the light surface rust with oil and a brass brush. The frame was filled with gunk from carry and I found some rust in the mag release when I removed that. The frame itself had no rust, and the barrel just surface wear. The screws had a little narfing and wear, so I touched them up with cold blue.

But I'll also add to the mix, that depending on the heat treatment.... not so much in firearms receivers, but maybe in small parts, you can find differences in magnetic properties. All steels will change magenetic properties when a certain temperature is reached, depending on the alloy used. How it changes, and remains changed depends on the quench temperture and the tempering (reheating to further change the structure of the steel). Stainless steels have their own properties of course, but.... there are also non magnetic, and non stainless steels that exist! (because of their treatment) You just don't see them in everyday consumer grade items. Would lead some to believe "it must be stainless, but a poor grade" because the part is both non-magnetic, and also oxidized (rust). In actuality, they're probably looking at a very exotic (and expensive) steel part, that has become non magnetic, or very low magnetic, because of its treatment.
Thanks Mugs!

Just for the halibut, I checked my duo tone MK9 from 2000-2001..................both the slide and the frame attracted a magnet......................
