quite by accident (internet surfing pays off) I discovered the Winchester Shooting Facility in East Alton, Il. this is not advertised and just far enough from St.Louis, Mo. that it's not overly popular. the handgun part of the facility is a well run covered range. they don't rent guns, but they loan them. the only charge is buying ammo(Winchester of course). the state of Il/ has some funny gun laws, so I didn't carry, just went naked. (Mo. CCW is worthless in Il.) ok. long story short. I sign in and the guy at the desk asks which caliber I'd like to shoot, I get a box of 147gr. flat nose 9mm. then I get a loaner pistol, a Sig 210. (first time I shot a pistol with a trigger like that, wow!). yes, I'm going back.

Getting a free loaner gun is just icing on the cake. My range charges for loaner guns along with a range fee. Is the Winchester range part of Winchester Arms or is it just a local name?

this is Winchester. next door is the Spencer Olin golf course and down the road is the Olin plant. (google the "loaner gun", SIG SAUER P210 , there $2k to $6k) I was in heaven.

the story I heard is that the ballistics dept. at winchester had 2 of them and after testing were going to pitch them, somebody got them directed to the range. one of them doesn't work so I offered them $100, that got a laugh. some custom wood grips and big target sights would turn a military 210 into real terror at the range. typical 1950's euro gun, the magazine is held in by a spring release at the bottom of the grip, looks funky, works great. got to love simple engineering and fine craftsmanship.
