Picked up a fun little toy last night - a 1990 vintage Marlin 1895SS 45-70. It's in pretty good shape for the year, came with a Lyman 66 peep (which I've already removed, for now at least). Metal is great on it, wood has some very minor dings and the bottom sling stud came out of the butt stock and has been filled, but we'll get that nice looking (isn't bad now, I just like pretty guns). I have yet to shoot it, but should be loads of fun!

Very nice Justin. Happy new gun to you. Looks sweet.

You'll definitely know if you have a misfire or I guess more obviously you'll know when it goes off.
They buck a bit but you can handle it.

Great looking rifle. It must have been popular to put those Lyman peep sights on Marlins. Mine came with one and I left it on. I really like it. But the gun looks better without.

Yeah I am tore. It's missing the disc ($6 from lyman) so it's more of a ghost ring at this point. I don't see this being my go to target rifle, but if that changes I'll slap the site back on it. What surprises me is how much they cost, $100! But it's cool that is has the zero set screws so you can remove most of it and then replace it without messing up the aim.

Some of the Lyman and old Marble sights go for really big bucks. I have a little box of old sight parts if I can identify it I just might have one of them disc. Part of it was inherited so I don't know the origin, part of it was mine and I only remember part of the origin. I don't throw nuthin away.

I am good about saving some things, but nothing like my grandpa was. When he died and his shop got cleaned out, he had piles of odd and ends. He had a box full of radio tubes (he didn't own anything with tubes), parts he had fabricated (something would break and he'd make a replacement, and while he was at it might as well make 10 others, even though this thing breaks every 20 some years)...

Hey I got nothing but respect for grandpa's. Somethings they do seem like down right foolishness but most come from a time when you didn't run down to Lowes for a new piece and if there was a new piece you didn't have the marbles to buy it.

I'm starting to relate to that. Old people rock! I hope I live long enough to qualify.

Congrats on the gun. I've always wanted an 1895G. That gun and the cartridge just ooze coolness.
