I'm going to be in IL over 9/11, and I would really like to be prepared. From what I can read, I can take guns, but no ammo. I understand transporting the firearms, but is there any way that I can legally bring ammo. I'm a bit worried about SHTF while on the road.

Thanks for the help!

Gun in a sealed container of some sort and ammo separate from the gun. What part of the state will you be in?

I'll pray for you and hope you get out alive.

Never do what I say or suggest but if I had to go to Chicago (heaven freaking forbid) my gun would not be in a sealed container and ammo would most definitely not be kept separate and there would be plenty of it.

What the heck is in Chicago that you can't get in NC or some other human populated area.

Don't go. Save yourself.

I would not give the law a second thought. Drive right, make sure your legal, conceal well and get the hell out quick as you can.

This is because Illinois does not recognize a permit from any other state?

If you did...you'd be the only one. Just sayin'.

If you have a licence from your state you can carry only in your car. If it is unloaded and in a case (I use a backpack) you are good to go
Who said you can't have ammo? You just can't buy any

Don't go.
I did some work in central Ill. 2 years ago. One of the locals had gotten in trouble for leaving his pistol at home with his wife. She did not have an owners permit and was in charge of the weapon. You cannot even handle a pistol at a gun store unless you have an owners permit. Crazy state.

Dont go. I went up there for 2 basic training graduations and have decided not to go back again. Twice recently was enough.

Consider a shotgun.

Consider a shotgun. Otherwise

I wish you luck. I would drive around that state instead of through it. I don't feel the need to give them any tax revenue. I understand if you have business there, but that is one crazy state. I've been to Chicago once, that was enough

funny... seems like IL has super strict gun laws... but my sister (who lives in chicago) says its like a war zone with people getting shot like every day..
but super strict gun laws prevent bad guys from shooting people! (sarcasm)

Driving through IL is pretty ok now if you have a home state carry permit. Stopping overnight/visiting still be a troublesome pita.

My son is going to school in the Chicago area, and I have business there too. It cannot be avoided. I really don't want to be there over 9/11, but that cannot be avoided either.

Thanks for all the feedback. Wish me luck! At least, I'm driving my own vehicle this time instead of flying.

I'm heading into Chicago in a few minutes to pick up a pretty original, fairly clean 1967 Honda Super Cub...Well worth the drive.

The violence is limited to a few small pockets of the city. Unless that is your destination, you'll be just fine. See some sites while you are in town, it's a beautiful city.

Don't believe everything the news guys hype...

If you have a CCW from your home state you can vehicle carry a handgun loaded while in IL. If you are not licensed to carry in your home state, you can have your firearm and ammo with you in the car as long as it is unloaded and in a case (handgun/rifle/shotgun). You can have it outside your vehicle if it is unloaded and in a case. There are many rumors about IL gun laws and they are not as bad as many think....yes more restrictive than some but overall not to bad.

I've looked at just about everything I could find, and I cannot find anything that says I can car carry in IL. I would really like to see the documentation too.

callede my local prosecutor who is a gun nut and personal friend and ask him about this to. and he did some research and could find nothings what so ever and he even called in a fovor with our Indiana state police guys and they ask a fellow Illinois officer and they were told NO u cannot. I wish this poster wasw dead right though as I am not saying he is wrong but I want some factual stuff and not word of mouth stuff, before I try this sh!t. I ride in Illinois alot kand I carry to but I know better to. I just don't think Illinois gives a rats ass about Indiana\ ccw permit holders in their state. I can tell you that Ohio has a ccw permit and does not reciprocate with Indiana who allows ANY state ccw permit holder to carry in our state. Its bull sh!t at its best but Ohio says, NO.. I carryt there to. I would feel so much more comfortable if they would all at least recdiprocate with a state that allows ccw, but some statesjust do not and I kthink Illinois is one of them. Lets face it Illinois was not overly joyed to even pass tyheir ccw law but the courts forced them to ..

Excellent idea. I can use it if I feel I'm complying...or not.

Just be careful when you dismount... the gun must be unloaded and locked up... the ammo, too, and separately. Also, remember that Cicago isn't like the rest of the state... it's CROOK County and governed by extreme anti-gunners.

I CCW up until my last dismount in Illinois and then everything is locked in secure boxes and chained in to the vehicle.

Since I generally can just drive around it, I do...
