I"ve been reading through all the "Recoil Spring" threads on here, and I haven't gotten my answer. Do you just replace the outer spring that slides off, or do you need to replace the smaller ring on the guide rod?
If the smaller, captured spring has to be replaced, how the heck do you do it?
Also, do you guys go with Kahr or Wolf springs? I probably have around 1200 rounds though my PM9, so figure I need to replace the recoil spring.

Most just replace the outer spring, the captured one is a nightmare and usually don't need replaced. If it ever did I would replace the whole unit to assure the retaining screw stays locked in place. Wolf makes Kahr springs so they are the same thing.

buy your springs from wolffs, they make kahrs springs anyhow. Bawanna is right, just go with the outter spring. 1200 rounds is IMO not needed to replace springs, but again springs are cheap in price so replace at YOUR DECISION. not something that is printed. I have 29,400 rounds through my PM9 and I don't keep perfect track of spring replacement but I would guess I have replaced the complete set twice and then the outter spring maybe 5 times or less. Normally your gun will let you know when it is time to replace also.
I will say this, when I order my springs from wolffs, I buy the 20.5# springs instead of the factory 18# recoil springs. Your gonna get the inner spring in the kit but just pitch it or set it aside and go with the outter spring and always remember the open end of the spring goes towards the front of the slide.
While your ordering from wolffs, to save some postage, order a set of 3 of their 5% more strength magazine springs for your PM9. they are dandy's and will certainly help with reliable slide locking open to.

jocko, how does the 20.5# spring affect the way it shoots?

to be honest, with my PM9 being magna ported, kinda hard to tell. For me it just lets me shoot it alot longer before spring changes. Felt recoil I would think might be less but with magna porting, that also happens, so not a good answer.
What it does to for many owners who have had some times the slide failing to completly lock into battery is to close the slide alot better due to what I think is alittle faster speed. Something just tells me that if the PM9 uses the same recoil assembly poundage at 18# as the PM40, that going up a few pounds could indeed be a good thing.
I can say on the littrle Ruger lcp that comes with 9# recoil springs that since wolffs has come out with some 13 # springs that many have went to them and it has solved in damn near every case the issue of slide not fully returing to battery . (3 springs in the little 380 lcp might be OK but after a few rounds it will losse some poundage. The 13# springs just bring the slide into full battery faster and it helps alot feeding issues also. those heavier poundage springs just help that slide strip that round out ofthe magazine alot nicer IMO. Course I also think the reason they don't have the heavier springs in there is that indeed some might not be able to rack the slide properly either. Kinda of a trade off IMO.
the nice thing is that for a few bucks spent, you can try um, if u don't like um for some reason, then there is no harm, no foul, just go back to the regular springs and be done with it. I guarantee yoiu I would for sur ehave the 20.5# springs in my PM40 if I owned one. along with magna porting it also.
