Trying to figure out what I want. I know I want IWB but not sure if I want something "open" or "closed" (some sort of something to secure it in the holster. Just curious on opinions and why. I am new to owning and carrying so just trying to figure out what I like.

What are you carrying? The retention holster like the second one is not really that handy. If the holster fits well and is IWB the holster grips the pistol as retention. With a strap as well as having to lift your shirt to draw, you may as well have it in a back pack....
I am a fan of the Remora Holsters for IWB. With a full sweat shield that keeps all of the pistol off of my skin, but I live in the sweaty south, so it is as much to keep the pistol from being soaked as it is for my skin to not rub...
Jason Winnie makes some skinny IWB holsters if you want a deep ride clip height.... DEEP CLIP (http://www.jasonwinnie.com/iwb-with-steel-clip-and-body-shield-j221/) This works for me in the Appendix and 3 O'clock positions, but not so good aft of that. Anything after 3 O'clock, I go to the Remora....

Choosing holsters seems to be more personal than even selecting a firearm. Most of us acquire a whole drawer full of holsters through trial and error before we stumble upon our favorites. With that said, you typically cannot go wrong with anything leather --- especially for IWB. I like the ones with the dual snaps = real stable and comfortable.

If you need that gun you'll need it in a hurry. If you go IWB retention isn't a problem. I used a PJ Holster AIWB. It's light weight, made of Kydex and very simple in design. I'd suggest an over the belt loop so that the weight of the gun is carried on the belt and not on your waistband as it is in the j-hook design.

I agree with this statement 100%. It's really personal preference. For IWB Kydex I really like the PJ Holsters with reinforced clip. My preferences for leather are the Milt Sparks, High Noon and Mitch Rosen. A nice BELT is very important so don't discount it.

I am not a fan of retention straps if you're not open carrying. They just add more to do when you need the gun. I'm a big fan of the RapidTuck from VedderHolsters: http://www.vedderholsters.com/rapidtuck/ The price is reasonable and there was no wait (they try to keep them in stock rather than make their customers wait 6 weeks or more for them to fulfill their backlog. It has enough of a leather backer to keep the majority of the gun off me, but not so much it's awkward at 3:00 (the double-clip holsters just don't work well for me there). I have a Remora for another gun and liked it, but using the bathroom in a public place is a problem with the no-clip design of the Remora.

I personally like the alien gear holster. IWB hybrid style holster. Around 35 bucks and ive never found it uncomfortable to wear. I carry with it daily in both winter and summer and have never had s problem. Plus their warranty is hard to beat. Get a new gun...simply send the old kydex in and theyll send you a new one for free.

Think of retention straps as a band aid for poorly fitting holsters.
As mentioned there's really no right answer from one person to the next. Gonna have to experiment a bit and see what works for you.
There's a plethora (jocko, that means a whole bunch) of holsters and makers to choose from. Now days I think we need bigger drawers to store holsters in.
I'm an OWB guy so not much help to ya. I do have and like a Garret Silent Thunder. Leather on the inside, kydex shell. Very solid piece of equipment.

I'll second the Alien Gear. You may want to try the new 2.0 - it is supposed to be more comfortable. My original - pretty much just like the one pictured above, took some break in. Just wear it around the house and yard on a weekend while your doing yard work, car work, etc. You may want to opt for the J clips.
Another option is Nate Squared (N82). I have two. Alien Gear is far less expensive, but N82 is darned comfortable. If you tuck in your shirt then get the Kydex Pro.
I tried cheap holsters, they become a pain in the hip rather quickly. Now they sit in the drawer unused.

For IWB carry almost universally most holsters will not have a retention strap. So that should answer your question.
Most quality holsters that are used for concealed carry use generally do not use retention straps even for OWB.( Unless you are a LEO,security guard, bodyguard, bouncer, etc. or have another specialized need for some level of positive retention.)
I would recommend you get a holster that is made to fit your firearm specifically, and not a one size fits 20+ guns type. A properly molded holster will have a fit that the gun actually "clicks" into when you put it in, whether Kydex or leather. That is were you get the retention from without a strap.
Good luck with your 1st holster search, I can assure you it will not be the only one you buy... I got to the point with my perfect holster searching that I learned how to make them for myself so I could make them exactly the way I wanted.

I think you can't go wrong with the PJ Holster. http://pjholster.com/ I have 2 one has the tuckable J-Clip and sits very low. The other is the reinforced clip on over the belt. The are both very comfortable and gun is very stable. I tend to carry at between 3:00 - 4:00 and my PM9 disappears under and T-shirt.

Just pick the one that works for you & give it a shot unless a friend will let you borrow it for a day or two to try it out.

I am liking the looks at least on the PJ and aliengear holsters. Don't have my CCHL yet so I still got a little time but would do want to get all that soon so that I can start carrying....when I want to

Can you home carry in your state? If so, then get one before your CHL, practice helps your confidence....

There ya go! Now you can practice and see where you will have to modify your behaviors and body language, what clothes work best etc... CC is a journey, take the step.... This will not be your last holster anyway....

I am debating on the alien gear 2.0 myself but it may be a tad thick as the pm9 is a very small gun it may be overkill, still contemplating.... the remora has had my attention for some time, the n82 not so much, just can't get past the twist release dealio, very negative indeed...
some day I'll get a holster and will actually be able to carry my pm9 :)
for my glocks though I use Hidden Hybrid Holsters, excellent and comfortable distributes the weight perfectly...

I totally agree with the vedder holster rapid tuck. I have one for my G42 and just ordered one for my new CM 40. Very comfortable and build quality is superb.

I am a huge fan of hybrid holsters, (similar to AlienGear, MTAC, CrossBreed, etc), for carrying FULL-SIZED guns. They distribute the weight over a broad segment of the belt, are rock solid and stay in place. I would NEVER use this type of holster on a sub-compact Kahr. Quite simply, it is overkill and unnecessarily bulky for tiny sub-compacts. Not to mention, one practically has to disrobe in order to put it on. That's not the type of rig you want on a gun that you'll grab quickly, as you're heading out for a loaf of bread.
If you want slim profile, fast and easy on/off, go with a single-clip, Kydex holster. PJ is a fine example. There are other good models, but none are slimmer than PJ.

I carry Crossbreed Holsters for all my CCW purposes. Have for years, and will for years to come. Nothing on the market is more comfortable for me.

Check out www.iwbholsterz.com. Kydex for my CW45 $30 shipped. Got it in 3-4 days.
For my CW380, I use a Galco leather IWB holster that is supposed to be for the Springfield XD-S. The CW380 fits really nice and snug in there, better (imho) than the Galco which is intended for the 380 pistols. I use the Galco for when I am going out in the world, because it hooks nicely onto my pants. This is important, because I don't use pants with big leather belts. I use pants made by Ex-Officio, i.e. lightweight polycotton, with their own flimsy webbing built-in belt. The Galco isn't perfect, I wish the clip was thinner as it can print through thin clothing (though not explicitly as a gun), but overall I like the feel of it, leather is nice against the skin.
I also use a basic Remora IWB for the CW380 when I am at home lounging around in elastic "couch" pants that have no belt. I wear the gun around the house, not because I fear being attacked in my living room, but rather because I am trying to train myself to always be thinking about having it with me, on the theory that if I get used to that, then I won't have to think about putting it on. It'll just be second nature. That's what training is all about. The Remora works very well even on elastic pants.

FYI... In Texas, the Motorist Protection Law permits concealed carry in your car. Just be aware that you are not exempt from the federal school zone law (whatever it is called).
Regarding holsters, the only time I desire a retention holster is with the OWB type holsters that expose the end of the slide. Other than that, I don't like a thumb break. Like others have mentioned, I can recommend PJ holsters.

PJ!
Owned several hybrids no longer have them. Hybrids are a pita look like crap and don't add to concealabilty!

I have 2 of those galco holsters. One for my pm9 and one for my pm45. I've tried several holsters and that galco one fits me best. I wouldn't worry about the gun coming out inadvertently- unless your pants are not buttoned!
