View Full Version : my PM9 is different

The slide of mine is tapered in front like the CW9, and the barrel chamber (external part) that locks into the ejection port is tapered on both the right and left side. It is not one block, but rather angular. Is this the new style to prevent peening. I've seen some other pics on the forum with the same type of barrel, but none with the tapered slide. What's up with the tapered slide. I like the blocky look. BTW, the mags hold the ammo real tight. No cartridge dip like I've heard about. A round (snap caps) will feed with the sling shot method. I will take pics later today and post. Serial number is IB9xxx.

Pics??

here are pics of the front of my PM9 slide. It looks different than others on the forum.
Today I shot about 225 rounds and had no FTF or FTE. The only issue was two instances of premature slide lock. How do I fix that? Other than that, it has less recoil than my former LCP. I carried home from the range, and it seemed to disappear-hardly knew I had it inside my waist band.
I cleaned that bad boy as soon as I got home and I am ready to carry, except for that lock issue. A quick flick of the thumb on the slide release cured that, but is there more of a permanent fix? I looked closely and it seems that a round is brushing the slide stop. Does that mean the slide stop is too long? Should I call Kahr and as for a new one?

You're right! I just looked at my PM9 and it is different than yours....no tapering. Also, my mag release is black. Mine's been perfect through 400 rounds so I can't help with your other issue.

Make sure you're not hitting the stop with your thumb. It's very easy to do and not even realize that you're doing it.

Not hitting the stop. Upon closer examination with a magazine in, the tip of some of the ammo is brushing against the stop and pushing it upward. I will call Kahr tomorrow and see if they will send a new slide stop, just a tad shorter.

In the past few months, I've only seen the tapered slides on new Kahrs.

I think it's a great idea - it's what enamored me to the CW9 when it first came out.

IC0xxx here and no taper.

I would definitely appreciate the taper for it's function.

............but looks better without IMO.

Did you notice the frame is actually shorter by about a quarter inch and more of the slide is exposed? I really DO like the way the taper cut lines up with the frame and the look of it. We always want what we can't have I guess. I just bought by PM-9 not even 3 months ago, IB7---, and if I'd known this was coming, I might have waited. I don't think it will affect the concealability but it might make it easier to get back into a pocket holster. Weird that Kahr hasn't updated the pics for the PM-9 on their website. A slide is $150 but it has to be factory fitted and already have the internals NP3 coated which would be easy enough to swap out, but my XS sights are dead nuts on so I wouldn't risk effing them up.

I just got mine 2 weeks ago. IB8XXX. NO taper.

I wonder if the taper does make it easier to reholster. Surely that isn't the reason for the change.

It seems that there is no rhyme or reason for the taper based on the serial number.

I e-mailed kahr this morning about the premature slide locking and asked for a new slide stop. I got an e-mail back with in the hour saying, no problem, one is in the mail.

I asked about the taper on the slide, but they did not respond to that issue. Actually, the look is starting to grow on me.

I shot yesterday (225 rounds). It is surprizingly accurate and recoil is minimal. I thought it was going to be a barker, but it is not. So far I am very pleased. Right now I have it loaded with ball b/c I can't trust the hollow point ( 124 gr Gold Dot )yet. I know, ball will over penetrate, leave small holes and not expand. But, if someone pointed a gun at me, I won't be asking if it is ball or HP. I will just look at my feet and say, "feet don't fail me now." I hope that if I ever need it in an emergency situation, the other person will be saying the same-providing he isn't shooting back.

I wore my Bare Asset by High Noon today. It rides high and snug to the body. The holster is tight and will need some breaking in. I ordered it on Wed., got it today. That is quick service.

I am attaching the pic again, because I like it so much.

I looked at the PM9 on Kahr's webpage and the new PM9 DLC I have had for a couple of weeks, it has the beveled front like you describe which is different from the picture. Mine has shot 170 rounds or so with no problems.

It seems that there is no rhyme or reason for the taper based on the serial number.

Maybe the black treatment has something to do with the manufacturing timeline, so the black slides didn't get the taper till the ICxxxx range.

Hi everyone. Long time reader (i.e. lurker), first time posting. I am the proud owner of a new PM9 as well (first handgun) and want to take this opportunity to thank you all for sharing all of your good tips and insights on this forum. The slide on my new PM9 is also tapered (serial#IB8xxx) and I absolutely like the look. Attached are two pics of my baby.

Now for some important questions that I have not been able to find answers for anywhere on this forum:

1) Is there a lube chart or diagram out there for how we should lube up our Kahrs?

2) Does anyone have any clue as to what the proper procedure would be to prep my new Kahr?

3) Does anyone on here have any experience with shooting upwards of 30,000 rounds through their PM9? If so, can they fill us in on what gig they have going on and when they plan on retiring their weapon?

4) Does anyone else have a little nick in one of their guide rails?

5) Should I now go and shoot my PM9 like I stole it?

Thanks in advance for all of the replies, they are much appreciated.

Bawanna45cal, the answer is no to JimK, so you may put away the flak jacket....for now anyway! ;)

Jocko, I must come clean and admit that my questions were with my tongue firmly planted in my cheek. :lie::lie::lie: I have been reading and re-reading posts in the PM Series and Kahr-Tech forum for months now, and gone through all 23 pages of PM and all 7 pages of Kahr-Tech. My questions were a collection of those that have seemingly been asked and answered dozens of times (mostly by the two of you). I made an attempt at humor and apparently failed miserably. Okay, I know this is how you feel, you can admit it....

MikeyKahr---> :7: <---Jocko

I just want to say thanks for all of the posts and discussions that all of you have contributed to so far in this wonderful world of Kahr, they've been very helpful to this newbie here (and surely many others). The lube chart is fantastic as is the prepping thread. My PM9 is prepped (1000 hand racks just to be on the safe side!!), cleaned, lubed and ready to go for the first range session (i.e. 200+ round break-in session) later this week before my concealed carry class. Wish me luck!

One more question.....Should I use FMJ or HP for the break-in session?? ;) :2eek::2eek:

Nicely done, my flak jacket is put away. I think your gonna fit in just fine around here. I'm totally relieved that your identity is not who I thought it was.
I'd use FMJ / Ball IE: cheap for your break in, when you experience no issues and things are running smooth at whatever point that is 150 - 200 or before if your doing the installment break it which is perfectly fine, run your HP's to see if they run OK for ya.
Sorry I called you out without solid ID but your tongue in cheek, very good attempt at humor worked perfectly and I smelled troll. Even compared notes with a few others and all agreed something wasn't right.
Let us know how she runs when you hit the range.

Hello all,

I ordered a PM9093 from my local gun shop months ago.
They called this past Thursday to say the have it finally in
stock. I will be going on Monday to look at it an see if I
still want it. I guess I am the odd man out. I do not like
the tapered look.

I have done a lot of reading on multiple forums in regards to
Kahr and their firearms and though I made my mind up and go
purchase a PM9.

Two questions/ thoughts I have:

First, Why no news release or update on their website in regards to
a change in the slide. I think this is a big issue in regards to how a
company does business. Also on the same line, does a Kahr rep
ever come to this site for updates?

Second, Does the new tapered slide reduce weight to the gun?

Thank you for your time.

The P9, TP9 and CW9 series all have this same tapered slide, as does the PM45. Perhaps the PM9 change was made simply to unify the Kahr "look". A standardized slide design may also make manufacturing easier (cheaper).

Sorry fellas, I don't like the taper and never will. An Edsel will always be an Edsel. I hope Kahr will make that an option if they keep it. Edsel was not kind to Ford.

jocko
07-18-2010, 03:09 PM
I would think the taper is for weight reduction. Some like it some don't. I kinda lean towards liking it but my PM9 (over 3+ years old) never came that way and I had some slide melting done on it. Had it had that taper, I would not have done it. I would suspect kahr has the right to make in house changes as theys ee fit without releasing press releases. My bet is that if u want a PM9 without the taper, there are still some floating around dealer shelves
If one had bought that butt ugly edsel years ago and put it in a garage,he could make some big bucks today on it. People tastes change over time, course for me the edsel is still one of the most butt ugly cars every made. I think also edsel ford was a loser to, so it kinds goes hand in hand..

I guess the real issue is, does it affect the functioning of the gun? NO! So, whether it is fugly to some or good looking to others, is a personal thing. I like the taper because I have noticed that it goes back in my holster a bit easier. BTW, I can't see the taper when it is holstered and I don't believe anyone on the other end of the barrel is going to care either.

Well I bought the PM9093A on 07/23/10.
Feels solid and feels good in my hand.
Looking forward to taking it to the range.

Still wondering about if the tapered end reduces any weight.
I may call Kahr to see if they can answer.

Oh my.... Now what holster to choose! I am more of a pocket carry guy.

I've been away for a time. Got into rimfires for the cost cutting when it comes to shooting 100 rounds a day. Sorry to have neglected Kahrtalk!

I think the tapered SLIDE looks good, but... the shortening of the frame now makes the area below the barrel where the recoil spring is look like hammered snot. Especially the slots for the guide rails, what's up with that. Kind of half finished look to me. They should have left the frame length alone.
