Well, I finally found an answer to the quest for a working... reliable... high capacity magazine for the Glock .45, including my G21 SF and G21 SF-based Mech Tech Carbine Conversion. I had heard that the Kriss SMG mags and the conversion kits worked. I finally got some to test and was really pleased.
I searched online and watched several videos demonstrating the conversion using a 13-round G21 magazine... pretty easy.
I made one slight alteration to the baseplate of the magazine... very slightly smoothed the leading edge of rail to ease sliding over the locking tabs on the base of the conversion. It was really hard to get the baseplate on and rounding the leading edge of that rail made it easier. It might be a b!tch to get off, though. One could slightly round the tabs on both sides on the base of the conversion, but that's up to you. It would make un-doing the conversion much easier.
I found that cutting a couple of pieces of thick, insulated copper wire to lay on top of the two tabs on the sides to remove the springs or service the mag, which eased depressing those tabs. You can't do both sides with your fingers at the same time... well, maybe MOST of us can't! :D
The conversion process was easy. Disassemble the G21 magazine and put aside the spring and locking plate from the base. The G21 mag tube is inserted fully into the upper part of the G30 tube. Then the follower and spring are inserted up that part of the tube before inserting the bottom half of the conversion and snapping it into place. Then the baseplate is slid into place. Be careful of orientation when assembling the follower and the halves of the G30. As with the Kahr mags, the free end of the spring goes to the front of the follower for the most lift.
After assembly I was able to load 30 rounds into the first mag. The second mag would only take 28 with the first try. I unloaded it and managed to get 29 in the next time. I fired the first mag full once. The second I fired 3 or 4 mags full and alternated between 28 and 29 rounds before it was "full".
I had only one failure to feed and that might have been a premature slide lockback, but otherwise, I had no problems at all. I recommend the Mag UPLULA for any magazine loading! The G30 is more of a fit than the Korean high capacity mags and certainly works better. This is what is used for the Kriss SMG!
Insertion of the magazine into the pistol is best done with the slide locked back as there is a LOT of pressure on the top round from the compressed spring. It takes a lot of pressure to insert the G30 with the slide in battery!
I like this conversion and bought 4 for myself. I just ordered a bunch of those and some more G21 mags for sale at the gun shows.
