View Full Version : OK to top off magazine?

I'm a new guy with a PM9.
So I gather it's not kosher to manually rack the slide. (Am I reading that right?) Seems odd enough to me, but I guess I'll have to live with it.
Followup question:
Is it safe to top off the magazine? I.e. slap in the six round mag, chamber a round with the slide release, then drop the mag, add a round, and reinsert, so that you have one in the chamber and six in the mag?
(Suggestion: Questions like this should go in a sticky FAQ.)
Thanks,
D

Usually after the guns broke in some you can manually rack the slide. Some you can right out of the box, my PM45 worked fine. Kahr recommends using the slide release and usually if you can't manually rack a round it that method works. So you gotta kind of feel it out. If you hand rack properly, and just let the slide go unhindered I always figured it should work.
I usually top load my mags just as you describe and have not had any issues. Again I tried it during break in at the range to make sure everything was fine and dandy.
I don't know nothing about sticky's, takes a much smarter guy than me to do that stuff.
Yes, I can manually rack the slide with both the P9 and PM9, no problems.
Topping off mags, ditto.

with hand racking the kahr slides, if u can do it OK, Kahrs are tight, especially when new. After some rounds through it, one can then try to hand rack. I can tell you at first I had a hard time hand racking reliably, but now once the gun got a few rounds through it and I get better at hand racking it, I have no isses. So to answer your question. do both, use the slide lock lever as it will be consistant, hand racking, sometimes will give you ftf's or sometimes maybe the slide not going into full battery. Both will pass over time.
I always top off my magazine, when I carry, not so during range time

I top off and hand rack. No issues with the P45. I also do that with all of my pistols, again, no issues. I have always subscribed to the slingshot method of slide closure, it works well, and is universal.

I'm looking up superlatives, hmmm. Aaah good stuff.
I neglected to add my welcome too GunnerD, my multi tasking skils are'nt what they used to be and I was concentrating so hard on your question that I neglected to notice your new guy status.
Bombard us with some of them superlatives after your first range session. We're all behind ya.

Also don't fret keeping them loaded either.
Congats on your new found friend.
0 issues with racking the slide of my PM40 and topping off the mag.

I have both racked the slide, and used the recommended slide stop method. I find the recommended method the most reliable for ensuring the round goes into battery. As far as topping off mags, yes do it. I exclusively use the 7 rd mags for carry purposes, so I have 8 in the gun, plus another 7 just in case.

Affirmative, thats what I do. That way you have one up the tube ready to go at all times with a full magazine...mine feed well in both of my PM9 & Pm45.
To tell you the truth, once either of my pistols had gone through their breakin period, I find I can hand rack the slide and suffer no function problems. I don't however baby the slide...I kind of rack them with authority and let the springs do their thing.
