View Full Version : CW45 in For Repair

Good Day, I purchased a NIB CW45 about a year ago. I went to fire it the first time and had all kinds of problems. Failure to fire, stove top's, gun not chambering first round, rod extending through end of gun when resetting, slide not returning to battery position. Ball ammo would cause about every third round. Self Defense ammo every round. That happened last winter and just put it in a box and blamed it on the break in period. Got the gun out again in October and the exact same issues. Probably no more than 30 rounds total through the gun.
I called Kahr and they sent a prepaid Fed Ex label. I shipped it in on Monday and got a call today which is Wednesday from the repair tech. He told me that they were sending me a totally new gun because the one I had never should have made it through the factory. He did not go into detail as to the issues and I didn't ask. He said that he just fired my new gun and it worked flawlessly. Ran Federal ball and Hydroshock self defense and that it is through the break in period.
Two questions. Has anyone else heard of this solution. Very happy with the fact that they sent me a new gun and the eases some of my reliability concerns with the CW45, but good grief selling a gun that is a total failure to a customer is troubling. The fact that it is cheaper to send a new gun as opposed to fixing the flawed gun is also interesting.
Secondly, do you think they actually ran 200 rounds through the gun to clear the break in period or am I actually getting another refurbished gun from a customer that had the same or other issues and they have replaced the malfunctioning parts. I would like to think that I am getting a new gun, but I'm always suspicious.
Thanks for your opinions.

Just speculating, but I wonder if maybe both your slide and frame had a dimention out of spec . A number of us have had to have the frames replaced on our cw45 because the front frame rails were too short. Check out this thread:

Lots of stuff could be out of spec with the slide, or maybe even the barrel. At a certain point, it's probably just cheaper for Kahr to replace the whole gun.
Let us know how new one does...

It's hard for me to believe they put 200 rounds through it but it's possible. I have no idea whether they would replace it with a refurbished gun.

ur getting a new gun, for reasons they won't go into deptrhg with but again, I think kahr did the right thing, as far as the 200 rounds, , If they say they did it, then theyt did it, why try to disprove sumpin u cannot pssably do, if u were getting a refurbished gun they would also tellu that, WTF kahr is not a shady company, ur just assuming everything is CROCKED.. Kahrs refurbished gun are also marked as such, but are sold through legal dealers, not used as gun relacements. They sur ein hell willnot use a prior owners gun to sell as a refurbished gun, as that gun is already serilized and legally just cannot be resold as the same number by kahr. Things don't work that way. Technicaly IMO if kahr replaced one pat in an owners gun then u could call it a refurbished gun, but the serial number wouldnot change. In ur case if your getting a new gun it willhaveto be sent to a ffl dealer and reregistered for it willnot be ur old serial number...Shoot it like u stole it and quit worrying..

I have read where Kahr Springfield & Smith&Wesson have replaced a customer's gun for whatever reason & probably other manufacturers have too. With production guns its a roll of the dice. I would be a little irritated about the extra ffl transfer fee but if it goes back to the place you bought the gun from I would expect them to wave the fee or I would never go back to spend $ there.

You were lucky they replaced it. With my repair on my 1 week old gun, they reamed my slide instead of replacing it which left the inside looking all scratched up. Although you can't see it unless you have the slide off, I know its there.

I sent in my PM9 for repairs and the work they did looked totally awful also. I sent it back a second time and told them to make it look as good as it did when they first received it and they replaced it with a brand new gun plus a couple extra mags.

I would be curious to know precisely why they felt the need to replace the weapon. Something that bad should have been stopped by QC before it left the factory. Kahr is a quality company and occasionally they make a bofo.

Yes, and Domino's occasionally makes a pizza.

Update - It has been a week since they said they were contacting my FFL dealer and sending the new gun to me. Stopped at my FFL yesterday and they have no gun nor have they heard from them. Sent Ian an email yesterday asking for an update. Haven't heard back.

Maybe they read this thread and realized they need to go out and shoot it more? Seriously, follow up with your FFL and Kahr. Sounds like they may have the wrong contact info.

Update 2. I was a little impatient yesterday I suppose. Ian returned my email and said they showed the gun arrived yesterday. Went to pick it up today and I do indeed have a new gun. One concern does remain in that the FFL that I I chose charged me $35 to transfer the gun. Being that I paid a FFL fee on the returned gun I don't think I should be responsible for that fee. Going to ask Kahr to reimburse me. Overall very quick and quality service in my opinion.

great little gun (accept for the CW45's that should have been recalled), to bad the service/support is so bad. hey this is 2014, try to get service from AT&T, or some cable co., good luck.

I don't think your FFL should have charged you twice considering the circumstances. It isn't mandatory that he charge anything. I'd tell him I am finding someone else to do transfers in the future.

You are welcome to ask Kahr for a reimbursement (they just might surprise you) but your issue is with your FFL not Kahr. Kahr didn't charge you the transfer fee nor do they have any influence over your FFL. I guess I don't understand why you would even ask. Yet I shouldn't taint your good experience with my petty gripes. Good luck.

Update. Received my new CW45 today. No notes, no explanation just a new gun with factory installed night sights. Very pleased with their response time and service levels. A+ to KAHR!

When I wrote the last update I didn't think my last update uploaded. The night sights in my opinion make up for the FFL charge. To clarify I am completely satisfied with the service. I didn't realize in the light of day that I had night sights. Guess I should ask. Surely I didn't have them before? Having only handled the gun a couple of times I guess I could have missed them??????

It wasn't the same FFL I used before. Have a new gun shop a block from my house and used them to save the travel time. Assumed Kahr would cover it without having to ask.

Kahr did you right by giving you night sights for your trouble. The new ffl did not do you wrong by charging you, since they had nothing to do with your first gun. Think of it as $35 night sights, be happy, and move on. I wouldn't complain to either party about the ffl fee. Obviously just my humble opinion
