View Full Version : Do rubber grips on the CM9 make a big difference in control?

I have had my CM9 for a few months and it has become my EDC. It is a reliable little gun but I have difficulty shooting accurately when I start to speed up. I know there are a lot of factors for me but one I have noticed it that I often have to readjust my grip after a couple shots. I know that Pearce grip extension might help with that but I was wondering if Hogue grips, Pachmayr grips or even a bike tube might make much of a difference.
Any input is appreciated.

It could YMMV. Some buy the rubber grips to make it bigger and fit their hand better. Some to lessen the "cheese grater" effect. Both could help you shoot better although I prefer the standard grip. Try the bike tube to see if you like it (it's free if you have an old one handy). OTOH some prefer to stay away from slip on grips;;;concerned that they may move around a bit.

I like the feel of the Hogue HandAll Jr. grip sleeve, especially the finger groove on the front strap. And they are very inexpensive.

I second that on the Hogues. They make a big difference for me and don't add much bulk.

I run some stick on Traction Grips. I never shot the gun without them, but it definitely feels better in the hand with them, and they add no thickness to the grip, and they're cheap. I run them on a number of different handguns. I bought the Pearce grip extensions and hated them. I did't actually like the way the gun felt with them, and they look like a cheap add on because of the way the magazines fit the gun.

You can pick up a free used 1.75" bike inner tube from most bike shops trash pile. Custom cut to cover more grip than costlier slip ons . If you like the feel and don't need the extra thickness ,Traction grips makes stick ons that look nicer but cost more.

I'm cheap and have used on inner tube for my 3 kahrs for up to 6 or 7 years now and gave some to family for there small pistols.

I also like the Houge Handall jr.....................bulks up the grip just a bit, better fit in my hand..................my MK is an older model, so the grips are a bit more rubbery than the newer models, but it still feels better with the jr.....................

I like the palm swell on the Hogue's on my P9 Covert. They fill my hand better and I can shoot it better.

I could see how one of those Hogue's could help in shooting it, but as a pocket carry gun, at least for me, I wouldn't want the added thickness, and maybe it sticking inside my pocket. Assuming the material has the same feel as many other Hogue grips. It looks awfully close to the mag release, but maybe it's just the pic.

For pocket carry I would think any of the rubber grips or tubes would be a bad thing. Too easy to hang up.

I'd probably restipple the grip to reduce the cheese cutter effect. Good solid grip but won't hang up on clothing etc.

I don't pocket carry myself but some of the same issues apply to covering garments etc.

I did use the innertube trick on my PM45 for quite awhile until I did the stipple thing.

That's another reason I like the Traction Grips, they wrap around the front too so it covers the cheese grater on the front of the grip, which to me felt a lot worse than on the back of it. I think Talon Grips cover the back cheese grater too, but it looks a bit cheesy (pardon the pun).:)

The Traction Grips aren't near as sticky feeling as most rubber grips, so they work well for pocket use.

I'm with 89grand.
Traction grips are the first thing I order for a new Poly gun. I have the black rubber style on all of mine. I have been using them for years, since Don first started selling them back on the old elsiepea forum.
They look good and more importantly work great. Pocket carry and cover garments are not a problem with them. Grips sleeves are thicker, stickier, and tend to shift around.

Don's new wrap around style makes them even better. Here they are on my CM45.

If only they covered the rear too

It's hard to make them cover the rear too, and not look kind of goofy, like the Talon Grips do. Maybe it's just be, but I found the front of the stock grips much more uncomfortable than the back.

I've been using the Hogue Jr. rubber grips on my cw9 and cm9. They are great on the cw9, but on the cm9 used for pocket carry they are a little worrisome. So I was glad to see 89grand's post about the Traction Grips. And thanks, Beardog, for the picture, which sealed the deal for me. I just now placed an order for my cm9, and they are currently on sale. I like the look too. BTW, since the Traction Grips don't cover the back of the grip can it be sanded to tone down the abrasion a little without really hurting anything?

You can buy some extra material from Traction Grips for custom jobs, so one might be able to come up with something for the back that looks and works well.

I think you will like them!
As far a sanding down the rear of the grip you can do that if you want... What I have done on a few of mine to just break the sharp edges of the checkering in faster is rub the back strap with a piece of leather scrap (rough side) to "burnish" the checkering. This way no sanding marks or color changes are seen.

I have never had a Houge Handall jr. grip affect my draw, ever.............................................c omes out of my pocket smooth as silk. It also helps grab the grip and have a good hold on it...........it's pretty much covered up by your hand, before you even get it out, which probably explains why it never grabs on anything.........................................

For the Hogue fans, I found this sleeve to be a bit longer than the "Jr" and the finger ribs seem more "properly" aligned. It covers the whole length of the grip but will need a little trimming. I have them on a PM9 and a P45. I slipped them on, trimmed the bottom with a razor blade and used an Emory board to "dress" the cut edge so it wouldn't tear. The sleeve extends from beaver tail to mag well (actually the P45 is about 1/8" short of the mag well) with full front coverage; MUCH easier on the hand for a day at the range.Hogue Handall Tactical Grip Sleeve (Small)

Those TractionGrips do look GREAT but I found the palm swells of the Hogue sleeves help my large hands on the small grips of the Kahrs.

I pocket carry my CM9 or PM9 with Hogues every day. I have no problem drawing them. The rubber on the Hogues isn't as tacky as the Pachmayrs or other brands. I've tried Talons, but I have to be honest, they don't hold up. Talons are pretty durable for some weapons, like Glocks, but it depends where the seams fall. The Hogues work for me.

Thanks to everyone for their opinions. I think I might try the Hogue small grips.

Talon grips work really well. They look similar to the Traction grips that everyone is talking about, except they cover the back too. You can get them in a rubberized or sandpaper style. I have the rubberized ones, and they work great.

Well I have a slightly different take on all this. I really like the Hogue Handall Grip. I also have a Crinson Trace Laser that mounts on the triggerguard. The activation button is on the frontstrap of the CM or PM whichever. The little plastic downturn that the button is mounted on isn't that sturdy and doesn't always stay centered on the frontstrap. I thought about it for a while and decided to mount the Crimson Trace and then put on the Hogue Grip. It was obvious that when I slipped the grip up to cover the activation button that would cause the laser to be on all the time. I decided to put a small cutout in the grip which would allow the center of the button to be uncovered. Now I have the best of both worlds. I have the Crimson Trace mounted in a way that fastens down the plasic downturned piece the button is mounted on so it no longer moves around and I have the Hogue Grip too. What's not to like about that? I have it mounted on the CM40. The PM9 has night sites and will also get a Hogue grip.
