View Full Version : Thinking about a PM9 to replace my 442...

Hi Everyone,
I belt carry a G19 sometimes and pocket carry a 442 the rest of the time. The truth is that pocket carry is so easy that I pocket carry more than I should, but I have a few places I go where pocket carry is necessary.
I love Glock reliability and durability, but a G26 is just too big for this role. If it weren't, I'd be all over that.
I like the 442, it pocket carries great and is reliable. I've got the trigger what I would call workable for a j-frame. Polishing and a lighter rebound spring make it much better than the heavy weight it comes with from S&W. Even so, I feel that to get accuracy out of it (DAO) I need to double stage it where you pull to rotate the cylinder and then do your final aim and finish pulling to fire. My complaints are: Only 5 rounds, slower reloads, hard to shoot unless you practice a lot, heavy recoil for its ballistics. My other complaint is no fault of the gun, just that I'd like to standardize on 9mm.
But, I can't replace it with something that is unable to fill the same pocket concealment role. So I am looking at the PM9. A few years ago it looked like Kahr was having some issues with these, but lately they seem to be past the issues.
Does anyone have pocket carry experience with these?
What type of pocket holster?
Other thoughts?
Thanks,
Alan

I carry my PM9 almost all the time, mostly in my pocket either in a Desantis Nemesis or a Galco pocket holster and IWB occasionally.
It is very comfortable to carry, sometimes I even forget is there. I also carry a spare magazine in the opposite pocket in a mag carrier.
I can not begin to tell you how happy I am with this little gun you will not be disappointed, once you start carrying a PM9 chances are nothing else will fit the bill.

I have both the PM9 and the MK9 and the pocket holster I use is made by Ryan Grizzle. Here is a link to his sight Holsters by RGrizzle (http://rgrizzleleather.com/morephotos.html) the quality is unbelievable. There is an article about his holster in the July/August issue of American Handgunner. I also placed an order for a OWB because I was so happy with the quality of the above and they are good people to do business with.

Had G26 also and consider it too large for pocket. May be good for big guys, but I'm medium frame 175 lbs and that setup wasnt bloiwng up my skirt. My S&W model 60 was too thick and the Kel-Tec P3AT under powered (although I do pocket it once in a blue moon). After going through all 3 options, I'm happy to have landed on the PM9 with an extra mag when possible. Pocket carry with a Galco horse hide has been my daily carry. Occasionally IWB. Very happy with this setup.

I pocket carry my PM9 sometimes and I use a pocket holster made by a local company called Wild Bills.I believe if you give the PM9 a try, you`ll fall in love with it as most of us have.I can`t say enough good things about the Kahr.Because of my summer wardrobe,I was having some problems carrying in the hotter months,[it is a steambath here in North Carolina] but the PM9 took care of that.Dependable, accurate and easy to conceal,it`s all that and more.

I agree it is a good pocket carry DEPENDING on the pocket. It does not work well with some jeans. I use a high noon pocket grabber holster.

I have a S&W 442 airweight, and pocket carried it frequently. It is very comfortable, but I always thought that it was a little too bulky (the cylinder seems pretty thick, and the grip stuck out of my pocket sometimes depending on which pants I was wearing).
Since I have a CW9, I put that next to the S&W 442 and noted that the CW9 is thinner than the 442. Looking online, I saw that an empty 442 is very similar in weight to the PM9. So I took the chance and bought a PM9.
I've been pocket carrying my PM9 for a few weeks now and I love it! It's smaller than my 442 (thinner, shorter grip, slightly shorter length), and roughly the same weight. It fits better in my pocket, that's for sure.

I pocket carry a PM9 in Desantis Nemesis and IWB High Noon Hidden Alley, great gun accurate, I may get a PM45 because the PM9 has been so nice.

I pocket carry the PM9 in a #4 Blackhawk holster. It is loaded to the brim with 6+1 rounds of Speer 124 Gold Dots +P, and I carry the 7 rd mag in my back pocket as a spare.

You are obviously a person of refined taste :D
I have an MK9 (and hope to add a PM9 shortly). For a while Grizzle holsters were a well kept secret but after the American Handgunner article lots more people will get to try Ryan's holsters.
The MK9 is too heavy for pocket carry but I use a Grizzle pocket holster in the winter and drop it into the pocket of my barn coat. I'm going to order a few more Grizzle holsters because I'm so pleased with this one.

+1 on the DeSantis Nemesis Superfly with the velcro'd flap. Adjust it a little and you have ZERO printing. Works in jeans, too.

I use a Galco pocket holster and an Uncle Mikes #3. I carry my PM9 almost daily. When I don't, I carry my PM45. You're gonna love this little gun, it will soon become your favorite.

Hi,
Well, I am not surprised since this is kahrtalk, but you guys are talking me into the plunge. I called a couple of local places today and one guy has a PM9 stainless with night sights for $669. I saw the black model, but something about the stainless is calling to me. I liked the black mag base plate I saw in another thread and may do that with the stainless model. It is a lot of coin for such a little gun.
Thanks,
Alan

I prefer the look of the stainless duo tone look myself. Many prefer the all black so you need to wrap your own head around that part. Theres no going back once you get it. A few here have done just that very thing, got one then couldn't live without the other so either got rid of the one and went for the other or ended up with both.
669 w/night sights don't sound too bad but it pays to check around too. I don't think Bud's has any right now. I look at gunbroker and stuff just to see what they are going for.
Good luck with the quest.
Keep us posted, I'd ask for pictures but I'm waiting for some of Kahrseyes girlfriend, trying to stay focused. The wait and all is killing me.

Hi,
Well, I "pulled the trigger" on it and picked up a new PM9093 today. Stainless with stock sights, but I plan on replacing them with Trijicon's soon enough. It is IC12xx and has the newer style slide on it. My total out of pocket = $554.40 which was less than I originally thought I'd have to pay.
I've read where Kahr's seem to be closed using the slide stop, but so far mine doesn't care. With some dummy 9mm rounds (no powder, no primer), I can slingshot it and it loads them everytime.
Any idea what the max cartridge OAL is? My dummy rounds are 1.125 and they look mighty tight in the magazine. I think 9mm spec can go up to 1.169 or something quite long and I sure don't see those fitting.
Also, one other question. When you load a magazine, the first three cartridges are parallel to each other. When you push 4,5,6 in, the cartridge directly under the top cartridge seems to point downward a little more. This happens with both mags. I am presuming this is normal...
Thanks,
Alan

It is normal. It has been covered a ton of times on here. I think Kahr could shut everyone up if they redesigned the plastic follower but it doesn't affect the functioning of the gun so I guess they aren't really motivated to change it.
It would also check out the BIG DOT sights. They use Trijicon bulbs and are much more suited to this type of short range defensive pistol.
