View Full Version : Thinking of using PM9 for CCW and IDPA . . .

Long first post, sorry :D

I own a P238 (.380acp) that I bought for CCW. I've decided I want try IDPA with my CCW but IDPA only allow at minimum 9mm. So with this, I've decided a PM9 would fit the bill: It's concealable, I'd consolidate ammo with my Glock 19, and the ammo is cheap.

I would shoot the Glock 19 at IDPA but I would like to be proficient with the firearm that's with me 95% of the time. I think IDPA would be idea for: muscle memory, element of stress, holster draw, speed reloads, etc.

I guess my questions are:

1: Is this a good idea?
2: Does anybody use their PM9 in IDPA?
3: If you use the PM9 in IDPA are they temperamental?
4: If you use the PM9 in IDPA what advice to you have to a newbie :)

Thanks!

I'm very interested in the same things for the same reasons as you. I'd like to try IDPA for the first time but would prefer to use my PM9. It is what I carry 90%+ of the time. Definitely subscribing to this thread.

Try the Steel Challenge first. When I carried the Glock 26, I used it for SC. The last time I went, I did the first go around with 1911 and wanted to do a 2nd round with the PM9, but I ran out of time. It’s definitely going for a run next competition. I did an acceptable job with the 26, so I don’t see why the PM9 can’t keep up with it. I don’t do it to be top dog, I do it for practice and what better way than with your CCW?

I've never ran IDPA (but want to) but think there is no reason that the PM9 wouldn't do great. It has great accuracy and reliability (once you get those ~200 rounds through it). My only concern would be slower times because of reloads although that could be mitigated with the 8 round mags.

If you shoot it, let us know how it turns out and an AAR.

Thanks

I have shot my PM9 at IDPA. It is a very reliable gun, not tempramental at all. The gun did very well. *I* was the problem:-( Practice, practice, practice.

I shoot IDPA and I'm a certified safety officer. If your PM9 is reliable you shouldn't have any problem. You would be shooting in SSP (Stock Service Pistol) which includes Glocks, Sigs, etc etc. The only issue would be that those pistols will usually have 10 rounds in the magazines, so you'll be doing an extra reload or two depending on the COF. But the spirit of IDPA is to shoot your carry gun with carry gear and full charge service ammunition. My wife just shot our last match with her K9, and I intend to use my CW45 in our next match in CDP division. IDPA is a great sport and I have much more respect for the competitors who use their carry gear, rather than skirting the edge of the rules with their guns and gear and gaming it. Hope this helps. Good Luck.

Great idea. Too many people, IMO do IDPA to compete, and not enough do it to hone their skills with their carry gun. I love shooting IDPA and often use a G26 with an IWB holster from concealment. I've been thinking about using my P9 lately also.

Sounds great, thanks for the replies :)

I still need to get my Sig P238 sold in order to buy a PM9. Also, I've just learned I'm deploying soon, so IDPA will be on the back burner while I'm getting my family and I ready for me leaving in the next few months.

Halfbreed_83, bummer about putting IDPA on the back burner - but I guess you have a good excuse! Thanks (in advance) for your service to our country!
