Re: other people's guns.

Went to the range with some friends and we got to shoot each other's guns...

Mr. Teacup Limpwrister's M&P's shoot nice and are reliable as heck.
Another buddy brought a Sphinx .380 of which he was really proud. Nicely built but it has an awful trigger: way too long and must be 98 lbs. It doesn't even make a good belly gun IMHO. But he likes it so I kept my mouth shut.
He also brought an H&K P2000. Now that's a nice gun. Sweet trigger...decocker...and fits your hand like a glove. Now I know what Barth is always on about. We're trying to convince him to shoot IDPA with it next season. That gun is really really easy to shoot straight.
My Ruger Vaquero birdshead stole the show. Mr. TL obliterated the bullseye with his first shot. They had to stop and take pictures.
Mr. TL also purchased his fancy dancy Benelli shotgun today. So I see a Beretta AL 391 Urika in my future (his old sporting clays gun). It should go well with my Silver Pigeon Xtrap single.
I saw a S&W 640 with Novak style night sights in the gun counter...brushed stainless...hmmm...gotta ponder that...wood grips mighta pushed me over the edge. Colonel?

Yep. Life is good. :Amflag2: Take a buddy to the range...and shoot his stuff!

That's a surprising appraisal. I've owned two Sphinx AT-380s, a fairly rare gun not known to many. It is a DAO, stainless, ambidexterous, compact frame, 10 or 11 round round auto that is based in the CZ82/83, (they even share mags). The trigger pull on mine was about 8 lbs, not far different from a Kahr, and smooth as butter, as good as the elite trigger on my K9. This model one one of only a few .380s used as standard issue (back-up), to some LE agencies. These are fairly sought after. Surprised you didn't like it.

Here's one with the hard to find 11 round mag.

Flip side.

^^^ his Sphinx was newer production and right out of the box. Maybe it just needs broken in? But the trigger pull was much harder than my Kahrs. No way it was only 8 lbs. It felt even longer too but maybe that was because of the stiff pull. He did mention that these have been out of production for a long time. His is new. Were yours older? Maybe the older triggers were better? Otherwise the gun looked nice...well made.

Part of what takes me to forestry ranges is no range officer to get in the way when a couple guys shoot the bull then swap firearms to see how something you may never own feels and shoots. Makes the day just that much better .

I've cured a few Mr. Tea Cup Limpwristers. I was diplomatic about it, (I know hard to believe that's possible for me) but their shot strings improved immediately and they were much grateful before they left.

^^^ Mr. TL is actually an eerily accurate shot. But the gun almost jumps out of his hands. I look for cover. :behindsofa:

I like that! I bought a convertible .45 ACP/Colt s/a Ruger maybe 10 years or so back with the specific intention of converting it into a short barrel birds head. But my go to gunsmith, Milt Morrison, closed up shop and vanished not long after I bought it and before I could get to it.

Gun's still sitting in my safe, unfired. Now that you've reminded me of it and back to serious abut the shooting sport is one of my retirement priorities mebbe I'll dig it out and get 'er done.

^^^ do it!

Midway sells a stainless brirdshead frame.... http://www.midwayusa.com/product/821208/ruger-grip-frame-birds-head-ruger-new-model-single-six-vaquero-large-frame-stainless-steel

I wonder how that would work with a 4.6 inch Blackhawk? Hmmmmm...

Thanks for that....I'm gonna look into/consider it. I'll still need someone to shorten the barrel and convert the action to old model/colt style loading but fitting a new grip frame is a no sweat thingy.

Edit: Well, just found the trigger/hammer/spring kit for the loading conversion as well. Also well within my capabilities. This is so cool!

^^^^ I thought of you today ltxi. I've been wanting another short barrel revolver in 45colt or 44mag...but one that can handle heavy loads. And I stumbled across this Lipsey's exclusive Super Blackhawk/Bisley. Apologies for the stock pic but haven't taken any of my own yet. Maybe this will be some more inspiration for your birdshead project. :D

That's nice!! Thanks for the post

I did dig out the .45 Vaquero a couple/three weeks back and decided I'm not going modify it....gonna trade it off new unfired for a convertible .45 Blackhawk in blue and work with that. Biggest thing was the sights. Traditional, SA Colt/Vaquero, sights look cowboy cool but..... Otherwise, tho easily modified...second dislike is the hammer spur, third is the barrel length, and fourth is the finish (personal preference is blue). My other two center fire s/a Ruger revolvers are .357 Blackhawk purchased new in '70 or '71 and a Super Blackhawk I picked up used about 15 years ago and had custom tuned and high polish blue refinished. Both shorter barrels and both have been great.
