To whom it may concern,
Next Thursday Muggsy is going into the hospital for his second total knee replacement surgery. Between now and then I'll be accepting well wishes, but please don't tell me to "break a leg" like old Jocko did. That kinda unnerved me. At Bawanna's suggestion I'm forgoing any anesthetic and will simply bite down on a bullet. Due to the ammo shortage I'll be using one of my reloads. I'll try to get back on the website ASAP to let you know if I survived the operation or not. If I don't, I'll try to keep my comments short. I'm sure you'll all be waiting for the news with abated breath.

Good luck on the surgery Muggsy. We'll all be waiting to hear about how good it went. Don't know if we can keep things going until you get back but we'll try. Hope your nurses survive it too.

The only way to really appreciate deja vu is to experience it more than once!
Good luck on the second time around.

Now with that new Bionic Knee you may be able to pick up a second job as a NFL kicker you should to kick a 75 yard field goal with no problem. Listen old sailor you take care and get better my prayers are with you, just don’t kick the doctor with your old leg. Get better fast so we can see your mug on the forum again. Where the hell did all that good humor come from all of a sudden? Kinda like making peace with your god just in case I suppose....but it's still rather scary.
Brass cased lead...it's easier on the teeth, which you'll appreciate if you survive.
Sincerely...best of luck with this and look forward to "seeing" you when you get back.

Good luck on your surgery muggs. I work with people every week who have knee, hip and shoulder replacements and have found having the right "bullet holder" when you're biting that bullet can make things just a little bit easier..Just sayin ;)

As a public service I've offered to video tape the procedure and watch his back if he finds the need for the drugs. Drugs totally blow your situational awareness and the recently posted bullet holder would be a terrible waste if your asleep.
So despite your fear of every one seeing your shortcomings Ill be there to record everything for posterity and take care of the bullet holder for you as well.
I'm sure things will go just fine and dandy, I can feel it in my cells. They do this stuff every day. How do you thing them docs drive Mercedes, and Beamers, and wear fancy watches.
Best of luck. I have to go back and check out the bullet holder again.
Oh Muggs ol' bean.
#1. Get hold of the implant, find out how it works, correct machining deficiencies, then write FRONT on the front part. I know a guy who had a total knee replacement put in backwards and he's got one leg that works like a flippin' ostridge.
#2. Be sure to sign the papers to donate your body to science....... fiction.
#3. Another guy somehow had nerve damage after knee replacement. Every time he tries to squash a bug or put out a cigarette, he ends up pickin' his nose.
#4. Remember that you can get away with grabass, and blame it on the meds.
#5. If they won't let you out of the joint... I mean hospital... threaten to sing!

Good luck Muggs, break a-
sorry.
Take a Sharpie and clearly mark which knee they're supposed to do. Front and back of your leg, just in case.

My son has been needing that surgery ever since his car accident over three years ago. The doctors say he's too young and, so far, have refused to operate. Good luck with yours. I'm sure every thing will work out fine.

Fellas, I'm not into maudlin sentimentality, but I do appreciate your well wishes. My first knee replacement was a total disaster, but I have high hopes for the second. I have the Cleveland Clinics best orthopedic surgeon doing the job for me. Today I passed the pre-op testing so it's for sure a go. My wife has agreed to allow me to use her lap top, but not while I'm under the influence. You'll be hearing from me again ASAP. If you break any of your toys during the interim you'll have to put your faith in Gary to set em straight for ya. Between Gary and I we know everything that there is to know about Kahr pistols. We only let Jocko post his opinions for the comic relief. Shoot safe and keep em in the X-ring. I'll be back.

I know people who have had both knee and hip surgery. The hip is a far less complicated joint. It's far less painful to rehab and takes far less time to recover from. With a nerve block post surgical pain is practically non existent. Go for it.

Surprisingly, prosthetic knees and hips are a combination of stainless steel and polymer. I wouldn't be surprised if Justin Moon had a hand in their design. :)

Oh, two bits of advice:
1. The hospital gown opens in the back.
2. If you see this guy, don't walk--run away.

Hey, maybe you oughta get some optional equipment to go with it - if your Obamacare will cough up another $150K:

Kind of a cool novelty and something to play with but I don't see the point. I'll run circles around him in a chair, do anything that needs to be done, many of which I couldn't do in that set up.
Most things he'd have to go back to the chair anyhow. In and out of a car, bathroom visits, on and on.
Great concept and again would be fun for play but not practical.
I guess it would be cool to be able to wear cowboy gun belts and stuff again, I think I miss that the most of all.

Same as my observation of the several folk I know close up who have had one or the other...it ran rather counter intuitive until I really thought it through. I've been more than just fortunate wrt knees....never been easy on mine at all and one damaged pretty bad in a ski accident back in the late '70s eventually healed and amazingly has never given a bit of trouble in old age. Hope my luck continues to hold....to me, knee replacement recovery and rehab is something to be dreaded.
Soldier forth and do/be well...thinking' about you.

Thanks, downtownv. I'm well supplied with medical equipment including a set of wooden crutches dating back to 1972 when I blew out my first knee. I thrive on pain. Occasionally, I'll smash my thumb with a hammer just to see if that sort of thing still hurts. :) Thanks for the kind offer.

Yup, more than once I buried me power chair out by the wood pile. Had to call the missus to come winch me out. Once I didn't have my phone with me so I discharged the Cbob, she showed up much faster that time. Guess she was over anxious to see if she could plan her grieving trip to the Bahamas following my demise.
I tried to relieve her disappointment by telling her I just missed but I think she was still disappointed.

Good Luck Muggs, best wishes for a quick recovery.
Colonel, that was a first generation exoskeleton, say like a Model A Ford, I imagine in a few years, they will have that technology much smaller, and more efficient to the point it might actually make sense, say more like a Ferrari or Porsche compared with a Model A. They will probably have them shrunk down to fit under your pants.
Heck, they may be able to do it with implants and thought driven controllers, and no one would even know it was there. Technology is advancing at lightning pace these days, and cutting edge technology is old news in year or less. Take the 3d Printers, a very sizeable investment a couple years ago, now you can own one for around $1K. In a fairly short time they will probably be half that price.
Bawanna
01-13-2015, 06:14 PM
You had me right up until though driven controllers. I got nothing to work with..........
Your of course right on all counts. Technology is improving in leaps and bounds and it's all good.
Often thought what I'd do if they came out with a pill you took and tomorrow you'd be normal and could walk.
The only consistent answer I always have is I wouldn't be doing much sitting around, I'll tell ya that.
I'd probably walk ocean to ocean several times, focusing on the mountains. Kind of miss that.

Well, sometime you ought to get back down to Lake Tahoe, then drive up Mount Rose to the Tahoe Meadows Loop Trail - 1.2 miles around the loop, wheelchair accessible. They even have an indoor crapper building at the "trailhead". The wife & I walked it about 10 years ago in August and really enjoyed the views & the Alpine setting of the meadow:
https://tahoerimtrail.org/index.php?option=com_content&view=article&id=174&Itemid=207
Don't get it mixed up with the 23 mile trail that loops the Mt. Rose summit. lol
Being a resident of Central Texas, that was like walkin' on another planet to me.... just beautiful & so quiet with no tourists anywhere close by.
