I looked at a Wyndham Carbon Fiber AR 15 yesterday at our local gun show. Mostly just curious, looked at it before but never very hard.
Yesterday I actually perused it, held it etc. It was really light.
All the important stuff is still steel, so I'm thinking since the price is really decent, like 600 bucks, it might not be too bad.
I probably wouldn't shoot it a ton anyhow, no doubt out last me.
The kid working that table (it was a shop) said his uncle just got one from another uncle that had 1000's or round through it with no issue. He also said they had been around since bout 1994. I thought they were much newer than that.
I know Wyndham is a pretty top notch company and strive to do things right.
Anybody else own or have experience with a Carbon Fiber AR?
Not critical as I'm only about 550 bucks short of getting it anyhow.

I was thinking of one of those hard for awhile, but talked myself out of it.
I still like the gun, but just couldn't work out a bad enough want.

No personal experience with the carbon fiber AR but my first AR was a Windham Bushmaster and it is top notch. Still have it. I think you could probably trust a Windham AR.

Bawana,
I received a Bushmaster Carbon 15 Gen2 for Christmas. I have taken it to the range twice and really like it. The one I have is totally fiber upper and lower. After adjusting the red dot at home it was right on target when I shot it.

Thought about doing the same thing. At the last minute I bought a DPMS for about the same price. Just felt better with the aluminum upper and lower. This was two years ago and it has been 100%. I shoot with a couple of guys who have the carbon Bushmasters and they have had excellent service from them.

Sounds like you need to go ahead and get one. Price of ammo has come down too. I've seen. 223 ball ammo for about 30 cents per round if you keep an eye out.

One other thing to think about is, I understand, the carbon models are proprietary in their parts. With an aluminum gun all the parts are interchangeable across all the different manufacturers. It gives a lot more leeway if you want to modify it later on if it matters.

Tell her its the ultimate defense weapon when the hoards from over the mountain come after the tidal wave when California falls into the ocean. That should do it.
Oh, and tell her she'll like it too. My wife loves shooting her carbine.

I wondered about this very thing. That is a deal breaker right there. AR's are like Mr. Potato Head rifles, you can mix and match and switch stuff, but not so if the carbon models are proprietary.
I plan to add virtually nothing but flip up sights and possibly a reflex sight of some sort but not even sure about that. The trend is to hang everything including a cup holder and a kitchen sink on them and that destroys the whole purpose of it in my infinitely small mind.
Had officers bring me their personal AR's to do something to, takes me half an hour to get all the crap off of it to do what needs to be done.

I thought it was just the handguard and furniture that made the "carbon" name. The specs show a 7075 aluminum lower and I thought the upper was metal as well. I am quite sure the barrel is.

Hummm...A carbon fiber AR15 would pair well with a porcelain Glock 7 ;)
I don't have any experience with the composite AR's Col B. So can't really help with any first hand experience.
So take this as just my 2cents worth...
IMHO I don't see enough up side in price or weight savings to really consider buying an AR with a composite receiver over one with a standard aluminum receiver. Aluminum isn't exactly heavy.
Just as a quick example, here is a complete carbine kit (using a HQ FN cold hammer forged barrel) for 499.99 free shipping.

And its easy to find lower receivers going for around $50. Here is a Bushmaster @$49.95/free shipping.

Thats about the same price as what you said they want for the Wyndham.

Stripped lowers are so cheap now you can get them for $50 and then get an assembled upper and lower parts kit. I thought about that since i have the ar wrenches and stuff.
But for 600 you can get one of these. Cant believe how the prices have dropped. Bet they wont stay that way though.

This post kind of brought me back to my senses, thanks Beardog. I'm not really an AR guy, I had a Colt Match Target and like a fool I sold it to a retired commander here for a gift price.
I'll stay focused on a Shiloh Sharps and my Schofield. Real guns for a real half man.
If I need to shoot fast skinny little bullets I'll use my Mini 14 that like a fool I ALMOST sold.

Col. B I sure didn't mean to turn you off your AR quest... Sorry! I just wanted to point out how the prices have come down lately on AR's , I feel bad now...:(

Yeah, people sure do load them down. I've kept mine bone stock to keep the weight down. I guess what hooked me was how enjoyable they are to shoot. Don't really know why but they are so different from anything else. My wife is not a gun enthusiast at all. She has shot with me a little in the past, but she really likes to shoot the AR???

They really are fun and accurate too. Just about anyone can handle them as far as recoil goes. The last time I had my AR out to the range my wife (who hasn't shot an AR in many years and never used a RDS) put 9 out of 10 hits on my 10" gong @100yds just resting it against the table and using an Aimpoint Pro.

Mini 14s are nice. Oldest son has one locked up in my gun cabinet. Very nice .223.

I have about 40 I can play with whenever I want, I guess I don't comprehend why I need my own.
If things go south in a handbasket I'll just take a few home with me along with all the ammo I can haul.
Don't feel bad in the least Beardog, you have my thanks for saving me from myself.

i own a pair of carbon 15s bought just after they first came out and both have fired probaly a 1000 rds. i was concerned about the lack of foward bolt assist but it has not been a problem. these were the very first ones offered to dealers so if there was a problem u would think it would have showed up.

The one I was looking at had a forward bolt assist which really doesn't matter much to me, nice to have but I don't know of anyone that ever uses it. I usually end up pushing it but mostly just cause it's there and I'm always in does it work mode around here.
It didn't seem to be near as smooth as the standard frames but I'm sure it would work fine.

Well, these little ARs won't be good for shooting buffalo like the Colonel's Sharps, but they'll be just fine for social work. As posted in a couple other threads, my S&W Sport has been a great buy (paid $579 + $5.99 shipping at GaG) for such a quality fit & finish in a "no-frills" aluminum lower AR. Did upgrade to a Magpul hand guard.

One caliber firearm I've never nor ever wanted to personally have is .223/5.56. Definitely odd for a gun guy, I know. Just have never gotten over the early M16s

I know what you mean. Had a dandy swell time with M16's many years ago. Wasn't the least bit interested in an AR. Then it happened. Was out at the range and a friend talked me into shooting his. As they say - the rest is history.
