A guy on the S&W forum reports that he had his 686 plus about a year, and took it out shooting, and the barrel flew off while he was shooting it.

I figure a more than a few of us have 686 revolvers, and even some 686 Plus models, and may be interested. I hope this is a very rare occurrence.
The story is a nearly a couple years old, forgive me if it's been posted before.

2 year old thread of an extremely rare event that isn't as dangerous as it sounds (all the damage goes down range). What is interesting though is everyone's' reactions and comments. That was entertaining.

 Thanks for the post!

Seriously: do be careful although there isn't anything you can do to avoid this unless you want to put your guns up for sale.

Odd things happen. I have a range patron that seems to be cursed. Last year he purchased a new S&W Model 327 TRR8 from the performance center and after the first 16 shots the ejector rod had worked loose and stripped it's threads rendering the gun useless. He put that gun in his bag and brought out his brand new unfired Ruger GP100 and, in less than twenty shots, something internal had broken and the gun locked up tight.
You gotta have a sense of humor.

Definitely qualifies for warranty repair. The 686 doesn't have a pinned barrel so evidently the barrel was over-tightened, fracturing the threaded portion during assembly, or the part was just defective. Regardless, happy to see no one was hurt.

+1
My S&W 629-2 44 mag has ~2000 rounds on the clock.
With full power 240 gr Magnum rounds.
I did loosen the cylinder.
But $25 to a gunsmith and problem solved.

Looked like the barrel broke off , forcing cone was still there. Now he has , or had a really snubby. I have seen a friend long awaited custom shop 44mag hunter come with the barrel over rotated about 10* and a 10ths cylinder gap. Gun shop took it back and he bought a ruger srh and has been a fine shooter for a couple years . Money ahead enough to buy the optics for it too.

We've seen much more dangerous Kabooms, but this one was kind of something you don't expect to see. I've never heard of that happening. And as already mentioned it wasn't too dangerous as all the parts went down range. There were plenty of guesses as to what caused it in the comments below the pictures, but no one will know for sure unless he posts something when he get's it back from S&W, if they can figure out what happened. You'd think they would really take some time and investigate this thoroughly, and figure it out. It being the 7 round model, I was expecting maybe the cylinder had blown a chunk off when I checked out the post.
