Rumors of old Muggsy's demise have been greatly exaggerated. (With apologies to Samuel Clemens.) The knee operation was a complete success, but the recovery process is long and painful. I was awake for the entire operation though I wasn't supposed to be. I got to hear the bone saw, drill and the hammering to install the parts. There was also a lot of clever banter like, "Damn it the drill bit broke." just to keep me amused. Along with the pain of surgery I'm getting to enjoy sciatic nerve pain as well. I finally gained the strength to climb the stairs to my my bedroom for the first time last night. Mrs Muggsy was getting bored with having sex on the couch. How's that for a word picture? Well you guys take care. I'll write again when pain permits. :(

IME, everybody fears the surgery but in reality, the pain doesn't come until the recovery. The doctors are very good about blocking off the pain during surgery then they wean you off the pain-killers gradually. Knee surgery is a MAJOR surgery, not having had it but having seen the whole thing on tv. When they get the knee out, your leg resembles a wet noodle then they put you back together again and after therapy, you're glad you made it. Wishing you a speedy recovery. At least you can still type so expect to continue seeing your posts.

Holy crap. I don't think I could handle that, muggsy. I don't care what you can/can't feel, just knowing what they're doing down there, I'd be screaming for more anesthesia. My daughter had to go through some major bone surgery last summer and even just the thought of what they were doing in there drove me nearly to madness.
Glad to hear you're on the mend, though!

That sex on the couch stuff is probably what screwed up your knee in the first place....................at your age, you'd better stick to the bed................no couch, no hanging baskets, wheel barrel, etc. Keep that up, and they'll be replacing something else...........................do they do that these days??????????????????? Just in case.............................................. ..................:p

Welcome back Muggs, glad you came through it ok. Get off the pain pills as quick as you can. It's easier that way. I've had a couple of friend stay on them longer than they needed, and it was hard for them to give them up. I'm sure the Dr. will cut you off when he thinks you're ready.
I'd like to hear more about it, perhaps a pm when you feel up to it. I have a friend, that is only 50, that needs to have his knee replaced. He blew it out bad playing baseball in High School, and ruined a BB scholarship from Texas A&M. Things like how tough the surgery was, how long it takes for you to recover. You'd think at 50 he'd heal faster, but he has so many other problems, broken back, and broken neck that they screwed up terribly when they tried to repair it, that he can't exercise much, which has caused them to keep putting back the surgery, along with deaths in the family, and taking care of his Father in law with Dementia.

You can still spell, so there are still some things connected correctly. Glad you're feeling good enough to get out, at least on the forum anyway.

This was my fourth major knee surgery I had the medial cartilage removed from both knees, one in 1975 and the other 1976. I spent a total of six months on crutches for the cartilage removal. My right knee was replaced in Feb. 2008 and my left on 1/18/ 2015. One thing is for sure I'm not giving them another shot at me. The doctors tell me that burns, child birth and bone surgery are the three most painful things to go through. I've been burned, but there's no way that I'm going through child birth to find out what that feels like. I'll try to pop in at least once a day to keep you amused.

I'm already amused at the very thought of you trying child birth. Man up and give it a go mate!

I don't post here much but I had my right knee replaced back on Dec 8. Finally mostly pain free now and able to get back to work but I woke up during my surgery, too, right when they were hammering the new prosthesis onto my femur. Didn't really bother me, but my anesthesiologist said it's not unusual with epidurals. I'm also having the whole sciatic pain thing. That's probably the thing that ticks me off the most. Here I go through the giant incision, really bad pain the first few weeks, then finly get back on my feet and able to walk normally, only to have the whole lower back and pain down my leg thing. So you have a comrade in the war of getting healthy, anyway. Good luck and keep it up.

On the contrary; most docs are ill equipped to handle the persistent badgering and ongoing reports of poor pain management and control, especially in the context of hurried post-op visitation and sheer patient volume so, in the interest of expediency and turn-over, they'll renew scripts for whatever narcotic-de-jour has been written and send the patient on their way. It's then the sole responsibility of the patient to wean him or herself off the med with little guidance or counseling.

I'm sure they told you - get moving as soon and as much as possible. It'll help with the sciatica too. Welcome back.

hehehehehe, a guy in his 70's addicted to pain pills? a guy in his 70's with pain, also has insurance to pay for his new hobby and the xrays to show the work done. if Muggsy has any left over narcotics he can send them to me (no FFL required). old guy with guns and pills, yep, that works. get well soon. stay well.
