Have been loading a variety of Poly coated lead bullets. Different vendors
offer various colors. One gave me a few red conical bullets and some green flat nose. Can't see much advantage to the flat nose but the conical might
be useful if one were having problems with chambering. So far, my CW9 gobbles up anything i put thru it. I've loaded many of these very light and the produce very little recoil but still cycle the slide. The poly does give off
a slight burnt plastic smell when shooting. Not particularly objectionable, but I'd rather smell powder than plastic. One of the makers, Black & Blue from Cal, produced the Red ones and they are very slick and shiney. I'll order more from him when needed. Mostly I've used 115gr but a few of the samples they gave me were 125 and 147. Haven't shot any of them yet.
Have you had to adjust the crimp to ensure it holds the slippery bullets?

Kind of like black talon's???????????? Wouldn't want to shoot anyone with those, and I would think that they would gum up your barrel.............................
You mean KTW "Teflon" coated bullets - they're a sort of faded lime green color.

A buddy and I shot about 300 rounds this afternoon. My CW9 handled them all and I couldn't tell a difference in accuracy with the heavier bullets. My friends Sig P238? didn't like the flat nose at all ...jammed it up. Curious thing is the reds have a burnt plastic smell, and the blues and greens do not. They come from different vendors. Bores were really clean afterwards. From this session, we decided we'll stay with 115gr round nose. Seems to suit our type of guns and shooting. I'll definitely continue to use poly coated.

How slippery...
Next time you have a box of these coated bullets, straighten your fingers and push them into the box.
The bullets will separate/part and your fingers will go to the bottom of the box...that's how slippery :2eek:
just sayin'

Never played with these coated bullets, they are kind of pretty.
Do they run quite a bit more than a regular bullet dollar wise.
And the primary purpose is easier on the bore or faster velocity or what?

Cant speak for the ones he purchased but the purpose of the coating (most commonly just powder coat) is it acts as lube for lead bullets but it encapsulates the bullet so there is no exposed lead during firing which also reduces smoke and lead exposure to the shooter

No, but I do use a Lee Factory Crimp Die to put the final crimp on them as well as plated ones.

So maybe some of the indoor ranges that prohibit exposed lead bullets would be ok with these?
That would be cool. I loaded a whole bunch of 45 Colts with lead and then the range decided not to allow them anymore.
I need to find some jacketed 45 Colt bullets now.

Costs vary some, but locally uncoated were $35 per 500 and $40 for coated. Far as I know, it mainly serves to keep ur fingers off the lead. Does seem to leave the bores cleaner. I haven't read anything about velocity tho.
Previously I said I was going to continue to use the poly coated but in searching around I found a vendor in AL selling plated for about same price: $75 per 1000, shipped. Ordered 2K and got them within 3-4 days. I still have a lot remaining from the box of 1000 red poly's I bought, and today picked up 2K Federal Primers for $28 per K. I'm set now for a good long time. Might pick up a couple more cans of Clays powder but thats about it.

Legend: Nice looking bullets, did you make those? What is the coating? What caliber/grain?

Cast Lee 358 124 2r 9mm 124gr powder coated I was playing with mixing colors. The orange is red and yellow mixed, pink is red and white and the dark green is black and lime green. This powder coat thing is amazing
I'm pushing cast bullets at jacketed velocities with no leading, smoke from lube or any residue left in the bore. You can spray it on or tumble them in powder coat and bake in a toaster oven for 15 min at 400. All the colors except the lime green are from Harbor Freight

How cool is that. So your just taking a standard old lead bullet and tumble em in this powder coat stuff and bake it and your done? Ready to load?
I thought powder coating involved electrically charging it and all kinds of scientific hocus pocus. I have a bunch of lead 45 Colt bullets, thought I was set and now the indoor ranges around here won't allow exposed lead. This stuff might put them bullets back on the menu.
I'm semi jazzed about this. And all from Harbor Freight?

That's about it. Static buildup in the tumble container(Cool whip bowels work well) makes the powder stick to the bullet. In the oven, cool and load.

Quite a handy person, you are! I guess as long as the powder coating gets on the bullet, it will bake on just fine. Clever.
