How many of us here on Kahr Talk have a Mosin Nagant or 2? I only have one (Russian), and would not mind another. It is a great, very simplistic, inexpensive bolt action that shoots inexpensive 7.62 x 54R. In any event, I am curious as to what kind of groups you are able to get out at about 200 or more yards with standard surplus ammo with iron sights.

What? No love for the Mosin around here?

I bought my Mosin a couple of years ago and have yet to shoot it or even clean all the preservative off of it. Came with the bayonet, ammo pouches and a couple of other things. Figure I'll hold onto it for another 10-15 years while other that have bought them have done every known modification possible and then break mine out and sell it and easily double my money!

If my plan works out, that'll put a crisp Benjamin in my pocket that by then will probably worth less than it is today.

From talking with others who shoot their Mosins, some are shooters and some are pretty much shot out. Kind of hit and miss even when the bore looks almost brand new.

I have two or three. One kinda customized. Fun toys is the best I can contribute....don't have an answer to your original question.

If I ever see a nice one... Most around here are pretty beat up. A buddy bought one, sufficiently rough, but it's an OK shooter (so he says).

I really wanted to go out and shoot with mine today, especially after seeing American Sniper earlier this afternoon. Unfortunately, I ran out of time. Maybe next weekend. Oh, by the way, what was the name of that movie with the Mosin as the sniper rifle?

Enemies at the gate...

I don't own one, but only because there no more (long gun) room in the safe. I have shot some decent (for me) 1 1/2 inch groups at 100yrds with the surplus "tuna can" ammo. My eyes wouldn't do 200yrds then and maybe not the 100 today...
A family friend had four of the 1891/30 Mosins a while back. Three shot nice groups but one wouldn't shoot a group under four inches with 5/6in being more common. That said, the 5in grouper would have been "close enough for (Russian) government work, circa 1944.

Shoot the old battle ax and enjoy the day!

Hello,

A Mosin-Nagant, properly set up and with a good bore, will do 2.5moa to sub-moa regardless of range. That's 2" to 5" at 200 yards. Shims and good triggers help, as does handloaded ammo. Affixing the bayonet will bring you to point-of-aim.

The iron sights are rather course. They are excellent battle sights; easy to see, but drawing a fine bead is difficult.

I've broken MOA only a couple times. This is not because the rifle is not capable, but rather because of my personal limitations.

Regards,

Josh

Thanks Planedude. i think i need to rent the video. Also, your groups at 100 yards sound pretty darn good to me.

Thanks Josh Smith. Welcome to the forum, and that was a very good first post.

I got mine in 2009 for $85 from J&G in AZ. Box of ammo was $85 also for 440 rounds. It was my first gun after 62 years. That was followed by my Ruger P345 and later by several other semi autos and a shotgun. I can hit a 8.5" paper target with 5 rounds at 100 yards but not in a discernible group. At my level of advanced maturity I'm lucky to see the paper and hold the rifle still enough to hit the target. It sure is a lot of fun blasting those holes, however. :-)

Thanks Dbholfo. I did get mine outlast weekend and only tried 3 shots on paper at 200 yards. It was an IPSC target and I put them all on there with the iron sights with no group to speak of. Hit a steel plate about 12" by 6" at 100 yards consistently. It was fun; but i could only last 20 rounds with the shoulder taking some pain.

I have had a few. Both the M44s and 91/30s. Picked up most of them used off people at gunshows that did not care for the recoil, especially from the M44s. Several of the guns had washed out rifling at the muzzle as well as dark bores from corrosive ammo. All had mismatched bolts, but headspace seemed o.k. Pie plate size groups from those at 100 yds was the norm.

Only had one Russian M44 with a like new bore and a well fitted, but mismatched bolt. That gun would do 1.5" at 100 yds. Also had one 91/30 with a good bore that would do 2" at 100 yds. Bolt on that gun was matched to the gun. Don't remember the maker.

All of my shooting with those guns was with military ammo, sometimes of unkown origin. And it didn't help that I have advanced gluacoma. So, it was done off a bench and with poor eyesight.

I don't have one right now. If one turns up, I will do a blind man range report on it. I usually wind up trading or selling them.

This was the last Russian M44 I had. Got it and a beater for 75 bucks. This one had a bore that looked unfired, probably cause it had been cannibalized for parts long ago cause the stock was broken along the left side. Anyway, got the trigger parts off the beater. Previous owner had already refinished the stock. It was a bit ligt colored for me, but I didn't wanna fugwidit. Got it all todgether right and it did the 1.5" M.O.A. at 100yds. Had a friend that wanted it bad. He swapped me a like new Remmy 760 pump rifle in .30-06 for it with a scope. Now that I could see well enough to shoot with.

i really like my 91/30, so much that i am thinking of collecting them, something i should have done around 10 years ago when they were around $80.00.
