Last pix is a dolphin, but as a surfer, you would just have to check your shorts after seeing that!

OldLincoln
07-19-2010, 03:39 PM
I'm no expert and perhaps Noslolo is, but that sure looks like a shark to me. The cute little dolphins I see at the aquarium don't look anything like this. If I were on the board I'd be lunch for whatever it is 'cause all it had to do was follow the rocket leaving a big brown contrail toward the beach.

That looks like a 18+ ft Orca, not a dolphin. Look at the dorsal fin and the coloration of the body. It looks to me like black over white. I don't want to be that close to a dolphin, let alone something they call a "KILLER WHALE"! Those things are really unpredictable, and have killed people.
They feed on marine mammals... mammals in the water... wouldn't want to be one... mammal in the water! Mmmmm... tasty mammal.

Wynn, I think it may indeed be a shark, I haven't known of orcas to come that far south. May be wrong but it also looks like the head is a bit more pointy than a whale or porpoise. The shape of the head is more like a shark. That may be a tiger shark. Remind me later when I have some more time, I got a good tiger shark story.

Crap! I went to get this and lost my danged post...
dolphin length - Google Search (http://www.google.com/search?q=dolphin+length&ie=utf-8&oe=utf-8&aq=t&rls=org.mozilla:en-US:official&client=firefox-a)
See the first listing... the KILLER WHALE is the largest Dolphin. Sharks have a shorter more triangular dorsal fin. The one in the picture is tall and has a bit of the characteristic floppiness of the Orca, as well as a bit of white on it. The diffusion of the water masks the lower white part of the Orca... and regular Dolphins aren't that BIG! ORCA! :001_tt2:
Wynn:D

wyntrout
07-20-2010, 11:44 AM
A tiger shark is shown and notice that its tail fin is vertical, while the mammals have horizontal tail fins. Look harder at the lower, lighter part of the ORCA... it's white. You can't see the whole thing. ORCA! ORCA! :001_tt2: Q.E.D.
Wynn:D:19:

Also:
The majority of small tooth whales are called dolphins. They are mammals of the order Cetacea and the families Plantanistidae and Delphinidae and include about 50 species. All have a beak like snout and sharp, conical teeth. The term porpoise is sometimes applied to many of the same species, but porpoises, are members of the family Phocaenidae and have a blunt snout and spade or chisel shaped teeth. The dolphin fish, is neither a dolphin nor a porpoise. It is a sport fish related to the mackerels.

Most dolphin species are about 6 ft in length, the males averaging 4 to 8 in longer than females. The largest is the killer whale, which can be 19-22ft long and weigh between 8000-10000lbs. One of the largest dolphins is the bottle-nose dolphin which can reach over 9ft in length and weigh 440 lbs. The smallest species is the buffeo, found in the Amazon River. The buffeo rarely grows over 3.9 ft in length and 66 lbs in weight, really smalled compared to the bottle_nose.

Dolphins feed on live food and are predators, except when trained otherwise in captivity. The primary food is fish, mostly things like herring, mackerel, and sardines. Some species seem to prefer squid, occasionally, shrimp and other crustacean are consumed, and even mollusk shells have been found in their stomach contents. Food consumption is estimated at about 66 lb a day for an individual about 8.2 ft in length and 220 lb in weight.

I did a Google-Fu search for "Orca and surfer" and found a sequence or group of photos that included this one. If you look hard enough, you can see the faint outline of the white lower part of the body.
I don't like to go deeper than my ankles in the ocean anymore... clear water, too. We have lots of sharks here and I don't want them mistaking me for food. I got my last sea survival training at Homestead AFB and in Biscayne Bay... JUST BEFORE Jaws came out. We parasailed behind a powerboat up to about 700 ft and then cut loose to practice parachuting into water. If I had seen Jaws, I would have had a lot more on my mind!
When I had sea survival in Japan, the training personnel came by us in the water while we were trying to inflate our darn raft... dragging a 7 foot hammerhead they had just caught. Funny guys.

I lived in Monserat (West Indies) as a child. I used to love to go down to the black beaches (the sand was black) and swim, until I saw the 10+ft hammer head washed up ashore. I stuck to the pool from that point on. I was only 7 at the time and it made a lasting impression, to say the least. That Hammer head was huge!!!

wyntrout
07-20-2010, 11:05 PM
Especially to a 7-year-old child! I haven't seen sharks while swimming... the fiercest things I saw were Moray Eels while snorkeling at Hanauma Bay, Oahu. That was pretty creepy... I kept all my appendages close to my body. I did get a real good sunburn on my back... head to heel. It only takes about 20 minutes or so without protection to get painfully burned. Most of the reef fish are pretty colorful and exotic.
I used to not worry about sharks until I got here and saw and heard about all of the shark bites and attacks. Then there are the aerial photos and videos on the news of the hundreds and thousands of sharks migrating along just yards away from swimmers at the beach! If those swimmers only knew!
I grew up on the west coast of Florida... Tampa, St. Petersburg, and the Sunshine Skyway and Causeway. We worried about stingrays, horseshoe crabs, crabs, and jellyfish. When I was 15, I was standing on some pilings of concrete about 15 yards out in the water fishing, when a large washtub-sized head popped up out of the water about 20 feet away and the mouth opened wide. My first thought was sea monster... that sucker was big... a sea turtle coming ashore to lay eggs, I guess. That thing seemed as big as a VW Beetle. I'm sure there was some magnification from my eyes getting big as saucers!

Ok, I now have to baby sit my building, I can now tell my tiger shark story. I was doing some spear fishing off Maui, and had a family friend of my old man's as my swim buddy. We had no gear save for our spear guns, dive knives, and a pair of fins. It was getting late in the day, and we had been having a great time. I see something way off in the distance that looked like a shark. I signal to Ivan to surface, and asked him what it was since he lived out that way. He looks, and says tiger shark. I reply shouldn't we get the hell out of dodge? He says no they aren't circling, and dives on me. That left me with two options, neither good: 1 leave my swim buddy on his own, 2 dive and carry on. I dove, and we had no problems what so ever with them. Good times that.

I thought you were going to tell us about a close call or something. I want my money back... er, my time.:D

Hey! I went to shoot my Tactical shotgun at the skeet range again. This makes 3 rounds ~ 75 shots. As I went to clean the gun, I felt movement as I was wiping down the exterior. On closer look, the rear sight was loose. One of the two screws was gone and the other was loose! The Rear screw on the Picatinny rail was loose, too. And while I was researching/searching for screws, I found that there was a set of front sight screws... at least one of those was loose. If I had shot one more round, I think that all of my sights could have fallen off. Now I have to go get some Loctite, too, and Loctite everything.

A hunter and his friend were sitting in a tall tower stand near State Highway 481 in Maverick Co., Texas, early one cold opening morning.

Suddenly, a huge non-typical buck walked out over the corn they had spread in the senderos with a tailgate feeder. Moving quickly, the hunter carefully aimed the Leupold scope on his .300 mag at the unsuspecting buck. As he was about to squeeze the trigger on this deer of a lifetime, his friend alerted him to a funeral procession passing slowly by down 481.

The hunter pulled away from the gunstock, set the rifle down, took off his hat, bowed his head, and then closed his eyes in prayer.

His friend was stunned. "Wow, that is the most thoughtful and touching thing I have ever seen you do. You are indeed the kindest man I have ever known, and I feel lucky to call you a friend."

The hunter shrugged. "Yeah, well, we were married for 35 years."

First-year students at the University of Minnesota's Vet school were attending their first anatomy class, with a real dead cow. They all gathered around the surgery table with the body covered with a white sheet.
The professor started the class by telling them, "In Veterinary Medicine it is necessary to have two important qualities as a doctor: The first is that you not be disgusted by anything involving the animal body."
For an example, the Professor pulled back the sheet, stuck his finger in the butt of the dead cow, withdrew it and stuck his finger in his mouth. "Go ahead and do the same thing," he told his students.
The students freaked out, hesitated for several minutes, but eventually took turns sticking a finger in the butt of the dead cow and sucking on it.
When everyone finished, the Professor looked at them and said, "The second most important quality is observation. I stuck in my middle finger and sucked on my index finger. Now learn to pay attention. Life's tough, but it's even tougher if you're stupid"

I was trying to add a bunch of other photos when I lost my 'Net/DSL connection. While trouble shooting, I found the phones all had a warble tone, including the Network Interface Connection outside... indicating it was THEIR problem, not mine.
By the time half an hour had passed and I got a person from AT&T, the problem had quit and the connection was back up. Now the gal was trying to sell me DirecTV.
I have DISH for one reason, I can use any USB drive for storage, upload download from any of my DISH DVRs and then upload or download to/from the others. DirectTV melds the DVR and the External USB drive so that it only works with the one DVR and if either drive malfunctions, you lose everything on both drives. I'm guessing it's a RAID-type deal limited to USB2.0 speed.
Anyhow, after getting switched to a repair rep, I was back in a stupid auto/computer answering maze starting over, so I hung up my cell phone. ARRGH!

I think mine has more buttons and dials. Definitely more gauges, lights and electrified switches.
She left me for Vegas with a girlfriend for the weekend. It's like having a party when my parents are gone.
Wanna have a kegger?

I had to read it three times to make sure you didn't say "She left me with a girlfriend for Vegas for the weekend". I did get the part about being invited to the kegger though. :) What time do we start?

Oh most definitely a kegger kind of time. When do we start, and how many do you want me to bring. Jon's getting ****** up!

May this be a valuable lesson for us all!!!

SENIOR MOMENT:

I was in the restaurant yesterday when I suddenly realized I desperately
needed to pass gas. The music was really, really
loud, so I timed my gas with the beat of the music..

After a couple of songs, I started to feel better. I finished my
coffee, and noticed that everybody was staring at me....

Then I suddenly remembered that I was listening to my iPod.

hahahahahaa

Some of those balloons are really fantastic... and quite expensive... I prefer a little more control over the conveyance I'm riding in. Those things have a nasty propensity for finding and becoming entangled in, powerlines!

We have a lot of balloons in our area. None half as cool as that one that I've seen. A big field they all set up at and apparently lots of places to land. I've had them come down in my front yard several times. It's amazing they can control their direction as good as they do sometimes. They do quite often end up in places they didn't plan. I love watching the chase cars trying to figure out how to get to their balloon by road.
They aren't the fastest medium for getting from point a to point b either but sometimes it's the journey, not the destination?

Every year we have a "Balloon Festival" it is rather large, one of the largest in the nation as I understand it. My uncle had one land in his back yard before (he has 5 acres). He said it was kinda funny, because they were about 20 feet off the ground and since he was out in his barn, they asked him if they could land there. The way he told it was quite funny, my thought was what were they going to do if he had said no?

I'm gonna try this photo again... maybe it will be more readable now. I got the image down to 63KB and uploaded almost 20K... best yet. The Attachment Manager is still downsizing, though the upper limit on .jpg size is 97.7KB??? I resized and cropped just the text... got it a few K bigger... can read now.

That last line is a killer. I think I had seen something like that before, but CFRS (can't F'n remember stuff/sh') Good for a laugh, and probably true too. I think a good hand cannon would be in better order, or better still a shoulder fired cannon, or morer and betterer a tank.

jlottmc, yeah, that last line or so sounded familiar... funny, though, as is the bear crawling out on that line.

I get a kick out of people who perfume themselves with bears' favorite smells and go hiking and camping... and people who store smelly stuff in their vehicles or tents are just asking for trouble. Bacon... that's really insane to cook or have bacon in bear country! Everyone loves BACON... and honey... and strawberries... and anything else women's hair products might smell like.

Large bears can tear open cars like we tear open potato chip bags.

We use Head and Shoulders... it doesn't smell like food.
