www.merriam-webster.com/dictionary/efficacy noun ef·fi·ca·cy \ˈe-fi-kə-sē\. : the power to produce a desired result or effect. the power to produce an effect.

http://billstclair.com/energy.html#efficacy It is defined as energy in foot pounds multiplied by projectile cross-sectional area in square inches.

a 40gr. .22lr from 2" barrel has a muzzle velocity of 880fps, muzzle energy= 69ft./lbs., efficacy= 3.
a 115gr. 9mm, going 1200fps has a muzzle energy of 368ft./lbs. and an efficacy of 37.
a 230 gr. .45acp going 900fps has a muzzle energy of 414ft./lbs. and an efficacy of 66.
a 1oz.(437gr.) 12 ga.(.72 cal.) slug going 1300fps has a muzzle energy of 1640ft./lbs. and an efficacy of 261.

I think capacity may need to be added to the equation...

the S&W 500, 5 shot, 4" weighs in at 56oz. to heavy for daily carry? the 629 snubbie, 2.65", .44mag, 6 shoot is only 39.6oz. see, here we go again with the darn compromises.
(I was watching Hickok45 shoot a Marlin levergun in .45-70. 34" long, maybe fit under a raincoat or extra long Hawiian shirt. you know how when he shoots his steel animals with a pistol they teeter and fall over, maybe not fall over for a 9mm? the .45-70 launches them, probably leaving a big dent. )
my usual P-32 in the shirt pocket and a CM9 in a IWB holster is feeling under powered after reading all this. how about a Glock30, with Glock21 mag in the holster and a CM45 in the shirt pocket(maybe have to shop some new shirts?)?

I think capacity may need to be added to the equation...

I was reading a g19 vs. G30sf article the other day. It went like this:

Both guns were MA compliant (10 rounds only)
The shooter pulled the pistol and emptied the mag on the target as fast as he reasonably could.
Missed the target twice each with the g19 and g30sf. 8 rounds on target with both guns.

Summary was whats best, 8 rounds on target with a 9mm or .45? Guess which one won?
