I've heard many talk against them, but I like Gun Reports. I just subscribed to Guns & Ammo and Handguns because of the great offer I got on cost ($15 for 24 issues (2 yrs) G&A and 7.50 for 6 issues (1 yr) Handguns). I also get American Rifleman from the NRA. :behindsofa:

I like GunTest. They don't accept advertising, they buy all their test guns off the street like the rest of us, so they don't use a loaned gun like the slick papered mags. Cost more but they also don't feel obligated to tell you a gun that may pay for advertising is good when it's not. They don't hold much back either. If it's junk they tell you.
I also get Guns and Ammo and Riflemen. I still miss Elmer Keith and Jeff Cooper.

I have tried most all over the years. IMO Combat Handguns
is the best for handguns. Also Gun Test. G&A years ago
ran a test of a gun and it was either BS or a worked on one from
factory. The gun was terrible IMO. I will not name it, not in
business anymore.

that's awesome, thanks!
(and a Kahr happens to be on the front, even better!)
I have always liked the American Hunter, Guns and Ammo & Guns magzine.
Take it for what i's worth, I am a gun junky from way back. :D

I have a subscription to Combat Handguns. It has nothing to do with the military really. In addition to the usual gun and ammo reviews, the magazine has something that a lot of the others don't have. The others sometime have this but this magazine always has this in every issue. It always has a section on self-defense stories. It also has articles on self-defense and the law. It has several case studies of self-defense shooting going to court and explains what went right or wrong. I think Ayoob writes this particular article. There are also several articles on training & tactics (what I call shooting lessons and scenarios).
Go here and look at the magazine covers and see what I am talking about
Combat Handguns | Combat Handguns Magazine (http://www.magazine-agent.com/combat-handguns/magazine)
that looks like a good one, deadhead. I'm much more into hand guns than rifles or shotguns, etc.
thanks to all for your suggestions. I'll research them a little more and hopefully order a couple of them shortly.

That's what I read too. Lots of good info on everyday, normal handguns. Jeff Cooper lives on in this magazine.
Gun Test is a good, honest effort at objectivity, but they are inconsistant at times, though overall I like the mag.

American Handgunner does the same thing, and they be stable mates at FMG. The only other thing I would add is Shotgun News, and those are pretty much all I read magazine wise.

Best magazine reccomendation? Hands down the Glock Happy Stick! 33 rounds of 9mm yummy shootie goodness. On the other hand, I no longer buy any of the newstand magazines. Same articles by different authors (and sometimes the same authors) for the past 20 years. I'm also sick unto death of newest/prettest/deadlyest 1911 gun of the month. I used to get combat handguns but when they got rid of Ed Lovett and Walt Raush I lost all interest. My $ now goes to ammo and training with Saurez International. Also wanted to add that I have a stack of combat handguns about 2 feet high with about one article marked with a post it note. Got tired of buying a magazine for one article.

I get American Rifleman as part of my NRA membership. I very rarely find any useful info in it, and don't spend a lot of time perusing it.
I don't subscribe to or read any other gun mags. IMO most of them are merely advertisements for the shooting industry, not sources of useful objective insight.
The last gun mag that I subscribed to was Gun Tests, and took it for several years. Unfortunately I found so many errors and inconsistencies that I came to view it as a waste of money.

I like the flush-fitting metal-based ones, but for reloads a couple of extra rounds are nice... with maybe the extended grip... a little kinder to my skin.

Seek counciling dude. I think they mean magazines like you find in the outhouse. Well I'm not sure what kind of mags you got in your outhouse and mayhaps it' best that way. LMHO, LMAO? I gotta practice the new one I just learned.

I also prefer the flush fitting metal base plates. Anyone with flush fitting metal bases for 9mm magazines they don't like we can work out a trade for something.

Back to the original subject. Does anyone get digital gun magazine subscriptions?
I get half a dozen or so magazines... car, financial, and computer through Zinio. They don't list any gun magazines, though.
I'm not trying to be green. It's that the darn paper magazines take up space and every few years I have to get rid of them, which seems wasteful. I like having them available electronically for convenience and if I want to research or print stuff, it's easier.

Did you check out desmo21 post: GUNS Magazine July 2010 (http://fmgpublications.ipaperus.com/FMGPublications/GUNS/GUNS0710/)
Its pretty slick. I just bookmarked it.
All those newspapers and magazines sure pile up in the garage recycle bins pretty fast, but not as fast as the beer bottles and cans! Must be my kids doing that.

Yeah, I downloaded that one... pdf file and free. I like the format and I printed up the ammo comparison tables and promptly lost them in the piles of paper. My many filing cabinets are full and it's a real PITA to try to get rid of or move selective bits of 19" front to back and two rows side by side in the top drawer of my favorite cabinet. It would take a week to look through all of that!
Recently I was trying to make a bit of space in ONE of my Guns hanging folders, and I removed about 30 pages of pictures of different Kahr PMs dating back four or five years. I have those guns now and can fondle them instead of drooling over the pictures.

Here's the latest Gun Magazine Digital Issue link:
GUNS Magazine September 2010 (http://fmgpublications.ipaperus.com/FMGPublications/GUNS/GUNS0910/)
There's an article about flying with guns but I don't think the bit about putting a TSA lock on your gun case inside luggage is correct.

I thought the lock could not be TSA approved. Besides those things are stupid easy to bypass. I wouldn't put one on.

That's what I'm saying... you don't want the easily defeated TSA locks... every thief has a key, I'm sure. I forget what I read recently, but the rule was only the owner can open the lock, and not to use TSA locks with their easily available "master keys" ON YOUR LOCKED HANDGUN inner case.
Wynn:D
jlottmc
07-20-2010, 11:56 AM
That's what I thought it was too. I know my ah "master keys" will open ANY lock though. Yes, I pick, yes I'm decent at it, no I won't open a lock that I am not 125% certain is ok to open. I am very careful as to which locks I open. That is a hobby that I revived and here lately has been paying big dividends here at work, with this renovation.
I do know that you can bring back up to 10 lbs of ammo in your checked luggage. :D
(in original packaging of course)

I think the Feds say 11 pounds per person, but some airlines reduce that to 7 or whatever. This September Guns mentions that you need to check with the airlines you fly with AND the states you land in, if you have to disembark.
I heard recently, or read online, where a plane had diverted for some reason and the passengers had to be bused to hotels, whereupon the local LE busted at least one guy for weapons violations of some kind... sucks.
Wynn
wow, that does suck. I got stranded in Memphis for 3 days cause of an ice storm and had to pull my luggage and everything. yikes.
jlottmc
07-22-2010, 03:59 AM
One more reason why I don't fly anymore. Last I checked it is 11 pounds, though the container doesn't have to be original. Original package is preferred, but not required, if you use a case designed to transport ammo, and specifically protect the primers, you can even use loaded magazines provided they can't dump rounds and the primers are protected.
I happen to know that 10 boxes (50 rounds each) of .380 ammo = 10 pounds.
at least that's what the shipping was on the last .380 I ordered from ableammo.com
and I'm all about reading online vs. "wasting" paper. I do consider myself somewhat of a tree hugger. I recycle, compost, save the trees, hug the turkeys. etc. BUT, when it comes to magazines, I like to thumb thru them, especially while in the 'library'. I just need the print version.
The same with books, if I read books on my laptop I get a HORRIBLE headache. My eye doc said it's because when you look at a computer screen, you don't blink as much and your eyes dry out, causing the headache.
Anyway, it all boils down to this: I may subscribe to 2 to 3 magazines (no more than I can read or keep up with), and then once I'm done, they go straight to the recycle bin.
